Y: (narration) Once summer is over, the southern states enter the season of torrential rains.
[Kaei 5 (1852), Autumn]
Y: (narration) Tosa’s crisp autumns are refreshing and invigorating. But they don’t last very long.
(Sakamoto Hachihei and Gonpei are in discussion)
Y: (narration) This autumn, the eldest son Gonpei-san, took over from Hachihei-san as the head of the Sakamoto family.
(Ryoma appears at the door.)
R: Elder Brother, you wanted to talk to me?
SG: Ryoma, come sit here.
(Otome enters room behind Ryoma, without asking)
SO: Excuse me
SG: What are you doing, Otome? I didn’t call for you!
SO: Elder brother, before he receives your instructions, Ryoma has something to say.
SG: Something to say?
R: Elder brother, Father, ever since I was born, I have never stepped outside of Tosa. That’s why, even for just one time only, I want to see what the world is like.
R: Please permit me to go to Edo! (Bows low. Otome does the same.)
R: I beg you please!
SG: Begging is useless on us!
SH: Ryoma, think it over carefully. You don’t even understand enough about Tosa, how can you talk about the world? Gonpei!
SG: Yes, sir. Ryoma, from tomorrow onwards, you go to Kumagawa (Kuma river)
SH: These are orders from above. You have to erect a dam there. (Passes the plans to Ryoma)
SG: Pile up the soil so the river doesn’t overflow. That’s what a dam is.
R: I know that.
SH: You have to gather people from the Takase and Inomata villages to work on this. You must finish the construction in 20 days.
(Ryoma and Otome exchange glances.)
SH: The best way to experience the world, is to work. (Leaves)
SG: It’s just as Father says. (He too leaves)
SO: Please wait, elder brother! (Runs after them)
R: Supervisory work….(Looks at the plans)
~ Opening Credits ~
Episode 2: Taiki Bansei (大器晩成 Great Talents Mature Late )
(At Takechi dojo. Hirai Shujiro, Okada Izo and Ryoma’s other friends are laughing.)
HS: What? In the end, Edo became Kumagawa?! (laugh)
Misc: That’s interesting! (laugh)
R: Ahh! But you people don’t need to laugh like that!
TH: Oh don’t laugh at him. Ryoma’s depressed enough already.
OI: But Takechi-san! I’ve never seen Ryoma read a book.
Misc: Me neither! Ryoma-san can’t even write nicely.
HS: How does someone like that plan to survive in Edo?
OI: If anyone should go to Edo, it should be Takechi-san.
Misc: That’s right! Yeah!
HS: Takechi-san is a master of both pen and sword. He should go for further study in Edo.
Misc: Yes! That’s true!
OI: Do you want to go, Takechi-san?
TH: There are still lots of things to learn in Tosa.
Misc: Ah! What a waste of talent!
R: That is the remarkable thing about Takechi-san!
Y: (narration) And so Ryoma’s casual remark that he wanted to go to Edo, also reached my ears.
(Yataro meets Kao in the street.)
HK: Yataro-san? We meet again.
HK: Bird cages?
Y: Oh….ah….I wanted some sparrows as pets, but I ended up buying too many cages.
HK: Yataro-san? Is there anything special in Edo?
Y: Edo has a brilliant Chinese classics teacher by the name of Asaka Gonsai. So who’s going to Edo? Shujiro?
HK: No, not my brother. (looks down)
Y: (pause) Ryoma?
HK: But the plan has been dropped. Please forget what you’ve just heard. These things should not concern Yataro-san. I’ll go now. Goodbye.
Y: Ryoma?…..he’s going to Edo?! (Yataro is shocked)
(At the Takechi residence. Takechi’s grandmother, Chi, lies on her futon, unable to move.)
TC: My legs hurt, and my hands are numb. (Takechi massages her leg)
TH: Your legs still hurt today.
TC: Yes. Thank you. (smiles happily)
TH: (to Tomi) Grandmother’s health is deteriorating by the day.
TT: She cries like a child when you’re not here.
TH: You can tell her not to worry. I’m not going anywhere.
TT: I will.
(The villagers are already at work, digging up rocks and soil. Ryoma arrives.)
R: Oh, they’re working! They’re working! (Walks to the middle of the people.) Ah, can everyone come close for a moment? (Villagers stop, but remain where they are) I am Sakamoto Ryoma, the supervisor appointed here. Let us all work together to erect the dam! Thank you! (Villagers not impressed. Continue with their work.) Now, what next…..(Walks forward but gets in the way.) Oh yes. Please be careful. That’s right! Pile up the soil there! This tree….move it over there. And this rock too….
(Later, looking around at the site.)
R: What a bore!
(A little girl quietly puts some food behind him.)
R: Hmm?….Huh? (picks it up) What’s this? (runs after her)
Girl: There’s so little this year.
Mum: Shush. We have to dry this while the sun is up.
(The mother is stripping rice kernels from the stalks. Mother and daughter see Ryoma. Rush forward to kneel, heads touching the ground.)
R: There’s no need to do that! Lift up your heads. (They don’t) What’s with this rice ball? The little girl put it down just now.
Mum: I’m very sorry. That was the best we could do.
R: (said with authority) Lift up your heads and look at me!
(They submit. Ryoma crouches down to their level. Smiles.)
R: We must not accept gifts from people for no reason. Can you tell me your reason?
(Later, Ryoma returns to the site)
R: So that’s what happened…..(He is holding the rice ball. Glances back and appears to have made up his mind) Yes!
Worker 1: What was that? Say that again (if you dare)?!
Worker 2: I said you’re always in the way! All..all of you.
Worker 1: Do you want a fight?
Worker 2: Fine! Who’s the one afraid?! (They start fighting)
R: Wait! I’m the supervisor assigned here…….(Tries to break them up, but the other workers start fighting too. Ryoma is unable to stop them.) Stop it! Stop it! Hey! Come back here!
Y: (narration) Actually people from the Takase and Inomata villages fight with each other every year over the supply of water in the fields. This was not something Ryoma could control.
R: Enough already! (No-one listens)
(At Yataro’s home. He is going through his books. His mother Iwasaki Miwa looks at him.)
IM: Yataro, are you going to sell those precious books of yours?
Y: If this goes on, I’ll be stuck on the fields forever. The birdcages aren’t selling. As long as the ol’ man keeps with his bad temper and gambling vices, I’ll never be able to make it my whole life. We’re both Kashi, yet some people can go and say “I want to go to Edo” so easily. Damn it! Damn!
(Miwa lifts off the floor boards to reveal a pot.)
IM: Yataro! (lugs it over, talking to herself) We’re sure to find a way……(pulls open the lid)
Y: What’s that? (looks in, shocked, pours money out) Uhh?…..(looks at his mother)
IW: (smiles) Your strength is in your studies, you cannot sell your books.
Y: (tears up) Mother! (shouts in joy)
(At the Hirai residence, Kao is reading.)
HS: Kao, can I come in?
HK: Please do, brother.
HS: (very happy) Father has something to tell you.
(Kao with her brother and father Hirai senior)
HK: Endan? (Marriage proposal)
H: It’s Karaki Kouemon-sama’s eldest son and heir, Kounosuke-sama. He seems to have fallen in love with you at first sight.
HK: Please wait, Father. I don’t want to get married yet.
HS: Kounosuke-sama is an extraordinary person. There couldn’t be a better match.
HK: Please father. Please decline this proposal.
HS: Could it be….you already have someone you like? (Kao cannot answer)
(Ryoma in his room, windmill in hand)
R: What should I do?!!
(He is mulling over the plans of the dam)
Y: (narration) All Ryoma could think about at this time, was the work at the dam. He had no idea something so important was happening to Kao. He’d even forgotten how much he wanted to go to Edo. Of course, he couldn’t have imagined that the man who would bring about his awakening is now sailing on the Indian Ocean towards Japan.
(Aboard the USS Mississippi, Commodore Perry throws a dart onto the world map. It hits Japan.)
Officer: Brilliant, sir!
CP: Did I hit the mark? The target’s so damn small, you can barely see it. (snigger)
Y: (narration) The American Navy Commodore, Matthew Calbraith Perry.
[Edo-jo, Edo Castle]
Y: (narration) In fact, the Bakufu (shogunate) in Edo had received news of Perry’s impending visit from Holland some months ago.
(The Council of Elders hold a secret meeting. They include :
- Chief senior councillor, Abe Masahiro 1;
- Joui party “Expel foreigners”, Kuze Hirochika;
- Kaikoku party “Open the country”, Matsudaira Tadakata; Matsudaira Noriyasu
- Hisen party “No war”, Makino Tadamasa)
AM: (Reading from report) Perry’s fleet includes the “Susquehanna”, “Mississippi”, “Saratoga” and “Plymouth”, Nine ships in total. Among them, the “Susquehanna” and “Mississippi” are steam powered warships which can sail at great speed even in the absence of wind. Perry has brought a letter from the American President to the Japan Taikun (shogun) He is expected to reach our soil earliest within the year, but no later than early next year.
MT: No doubt the Americans want us to open our country.
KH: Besides Holland, we do not trade with any other Western countries. This is the edict laid down and carried through by the Tokugawa with no exceptions for more than 200 years.3
MN: But Russian and British foreign vessels have been coming and going.
MkT: The old laws of the Tokugawa cannot hold anymore.
KH: How can you give up so easily?!
Y: (narration) I’m afraid there were many brilliant people in the Bakufu at that time. But as I see it, very very few could understand the severity of the situation.
AM: Under any circumstances, this news must be kept secret. Not a word can be leaked out.
All: Yes, sir.
Y: (narration) And so we move on…..
(Ryoma still trying to figure out a plan.)
R: Ah….I have no idea what to do! I don’t know! I don’t know! Don’t know!
(Downstars, Ryoma’s stepmother Iyo helps Hachihei change.)
SI: Ryoma sounds like he’s very troubled.
SH: Can’t even handle just a supervisory job on a dam. Good-for-nothing! And he dares to say he wants to go to Edo!
SI: (laugh) It’s not easy to get a son at old age. So we pamper him. Seems like this saying is true.
SI: Everytime we talk about Ryoma, you get jumpy at once.
SH: I want Ryoma to be someone who is sensible and keeps his feet on the ground! Just because he’s the younger son, he’s always depending on others. How is he going to accomplish anything in the future?
SI: Isn’t that what Ryoma is thinking too, when he says he wants to go to Edo? Stop treating him like a child. Why can’t you just let him?
(Ryoma’s voice moaning from above)
R: I don’t know! I don’t know! I don’t know!
SH: Good night.
(Ryoma lying on the floor. Turns his windmill once. Thinks of something.)
R: Oh….(Turns again.)
R: Oh….(Keeps turning it. He’s figured it out.)
R: Ah…..(Runs out.)
(At the Kumagawa river bank. Ryoma arrives pulling an ox-cart of barrels. Calls out as he approaches)
R: Oi! There’s sake!……Oi, people! Sake!…….Yeah, I’ve brought sake. Let’s put our work down for today. Come and have a drink together.
Worker: Put our work aside?
R: Yes. Look! I’ve even brought snacks!
(In town. Takechi sees Hachihei at a roadside tea stall.)
TH: Aren’t you Ryoma’s father?
SH: (gets up) Oh Takechi-sama! Please.
(Takechi sits with Hachihei.)
TH: You were going to Ushioe village to visit relatives?
SH: Yes, but I found I forgot to bring my gifts when I reached here. Otome is now going home to get them.
TH: Otome-dono? Isn’t Ryoma with you?
SH: Oh he’s in Kumagawa at the moment. He’s been appointed supervisor of the dam construction there.
SH: Ryoma is not as well-accomplished as you. However honed his kenjutsu skills, his future looks bleak with the way he is.
TH: Why don’t you go and have a look for yourself? Perhaps Ryoma is not the way Father thinks.
(At Kumagawa. The workers are drinking sake but they are very quiet.)
Worker: This (dried squid) is so tough!
(Ryoma looks around. His plan is not working.)
R: Why don’t we enjoy ourselves a bit more? Don’t look like you’re mourning here!
Worker 1: How can we be happy when the sake tastes so bad? (throws his bowl down)
Worker 2: (throws his down too) Isn’t that because you lot are here?!
Worker 1: What did you say?
(Ryoma runs in between.)
R: Stop it! Please! (The others join in the fight.) Can you not put aside your differences for a while?
Worker 1: Master Samurai will not understand what happens between us farmers!
R: Even though a samurai, I’m just a Kashi too. Since I’ve been ordered to erect the dam, I am no different from you all.
(The workers sit down again.)
R: That’s it. Let’s sing, shall we?
Misc: No way! Forget it!
R: You’re so quiet when you drink, it feels dead here!
(Hachihei almost reaches the river bank. Hears a shamisen4, then Ryoma’s voice.)
R: “Catfishes live in shallow waters, Birds rest on trees” People let’s sing together! (A worker looks away) “As we live, we will learn the worldly ways…..”
SH: What the hell is that idiot doing?
R: How’s my singing? (some workers are listening) “What is a change of heart….”
Worker 1: Stop it! Stop it! You carefree fool! You know nothing! How can a Kashi be the same as a farmer?
(Hachihei stops running)
R: That I know.
Worker 1: So you’re being condescending now?!
R: That’s not what I mean!
(Hachihei hides behind a fence)
Worker 1: We’re the ones looking down on you people!
Misc: That’s right!
Worker 2: It’s the Joshi who control Tosa, and us farmers who grow the food.
Worker 2: The Kashi don’t do anything. What value is there in your existence?
Misc: Well said! That’s right!
Worker 1: I still have work to do in my fields. But I’m forced to come here! And you just sit there and order us to “Do this, do that”. It’s so infuriating!
Misc: That’s it!
Worker 2: Tosa doesn’t need Kashi and dog poo!
Worker 2: You people pretend you’re samurais, but you’re no use at all!!
R: You’re right. You grow the food that we eat every day. True, perhaps we Kashi are no different from dog poo.
Worker 1: I’m calling it a day.
Misc: I’m going home too. (They start leaving)
R: But people, listen to me first! This Kumagawa floods every year. And whenever that happens, a lot of people will suffer! The family behind those trees have only women left. All their men have died in the floods! (The workers stop.)
To the mother and daughter left behind, we are like their gods. We’re working hard to stop the waters. The two of them are grateful to you from the bottom of their hearts! We have been entrusted with…… this very important job! Constructing the dam …….is a matter of life and death.
If you can’t stand the looks of me, then take it out on me. Come and beat me up. But we must stick to this job to the very end! (kneels down) Please! (bows low)
SH: (behind the fence) Ryoma……
Worker: Let’s go!
R: Wait! (runs to stop them) Please! (talking to each worker individually) Wait! Please! (they ignore him)
Worker: Out of the way!
R: Come back! People, hold on! Please! Don’t go! Wait! Please! Come on!
(Hachihei realizes what is happening.)
R: Come back everyone!
(Hachihei goes to see Ryoma’s kendo master Hineno Benji)
SH: Ryoma has entered Hineno-sensei’s school since he was 14 years old, learning kenjutsu from sensei all this time.
SH: From what sensei sees, what type of person is he like?
SH: I know it’s shameful for a father to enquire about his own son from other people. But as someone so close to him, I’m afraid I cannot see him accurately as he is.
HB: I see. What is Ryoma like…..
HB: His kenjutsu is very good already. Ryoma is very strong.
HB: Strong, but…..
HB: Not quite enough.
SH: Not enough?
HB: Not enough, but…..
HB: Limitless but ……I’m not sure.
SH: Not sure?
HB: What I do know is that among all my students, this is the first time I see someone like Ryoma.
SH: Oh! (not really understanding)
(At Yatoro’s hut. Yajiro returns home, drunk)
Sister: You’re back, father.
Y: Have you been drinking? Didn’t you go to the village gathering?
IY: There was sake at the gathering.
(Yataro thinks of something. Rushes over to check the pot of coins. It is empty.)
Y: Aah! (furious) Ol’ man! You took all the money to go gambling, didn’t you!!
IY: So….sorry! (kneels down “crying”) I’m so sorry Yataro! (bangs his hands on the floor) I’m such a hopeless father….. There’s no point in my staying alive! (sit up) I’ll go for harakiri. (gets his knife ready.)
Y: Stop it.
IY: No matter what, I am still subject to the bushido! (way of the samurai)
Y: Stop it!
IY: OK! (passes gas and passes out)
Y: (crying in exasperation)
(Yataro near the river side)
Y: Why am I always the one with the bad luck? Are there no gods or buddhas in this world? (hears Ryoma’s voice, spies him by the bank)
R: We can’t make it in time. Can we have 4 people up here by the press?
Worker 1: Oh, it’s time for lunch.
Misc: Oh hey! We’ll go for lunch too.
Y: That’s interesting…….
(Yataro sneeks up to the river bank to spy. Ryoma is dejected. Sees Kao .)
HK: Otome-san told me I would find you working here.
(Yataro furious, follows the two as they sit by the river.)
R: (open’s Kao’s lunch box) This! You made all this?!
HK: Well you don’t have to look so shocked.
R: Oh it looks scrumptious! I’ll dig in!
HK: There you go, chopsticks.
Y: Why? Why must I be made to watch this scene?!
R: Hmmm, this is great! It’s really good, Kao!
HK: Oh, don’t exaggerate!
R: It’s true, it’s true! Especially the roasted yams, a real delicacy! I never thought Kao could cook so well!
HK: Ryoma-san, do you know Karaki-sama?
HK: Karaki Kounosuke-sama?
R: Yes. What about him?
HK: We received his proposal.
R: (pause) For you?
HK: Do you think I should agree to it?
R: (stunned, forces a smile after a long time) Of course….of course you should. (Kao starts to tear) Kounosuke-Sama is a brilliant and capable man. As you can make such a good bento (lunchbox), I’m sure you’ll be an excellent bride. Oh, what good news. Shujiro-san must be ecstatic too, right? Hmmm, this tastes great.
(Kao snatches the bento and packs up)
HK: Yes, that’s true.
HK: I guess nothing beats this in blessing. (long pause) Why did you have to say that?
HK: It’s Ryoma-san I like.
R: (blink blink)
HK: Ever since I was a child…..I have always….always liked Ryoma-san.
(runs off crying. Ryoma looks after her, stunned. Hangs his head down.)
(Raining. Ryoma returns to the dam site.)
Misc: It’s starting to rain! It’s starting to rain! Let’s stop now. Let’s stop! We’ll end here for today.
(Ryoma is quiet and does not call them back. Some workers look on.)
Worker 1: What’s up with him?
Worker 2: Who knows?
(Heavy rain. Ryoma sits on the bench, brooding by himself.)
R: I….don’t understand people’s feelings….(starts moving the heavy loads by himself) Not a bit…..I don’t understand! (One after another. Slips, falls in the mud. Goes on until he’s too tired to stand. Lies in the mud) What …..what ……what ….. What can I do?!! I can’t do this! I can’t!!!! I can’t……..(gets up, unwilling to accept defeat)
Worker 1: Ryoma, you really are one strange samurai.
Worker 2: We’ve decided to call a truce before this job ends. And it’s not because of you.
Worker 1: It’s because this is a matter of life and death.
(Ryoma gets up. The workers are all back.)
R: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you everyone! (bows to them on his knees) Thank you! Thank you!
Worker 1: Let’s get going! (Workers shout in unison.)
(Ryoma gets up. The mother and daughter are there with another riceball.)
Y: (narration) 16 days later, the dam was complete. Just in time to meet the given deadline.
(At the Sakamoto home. The entire family is here, including Sakamoto Harui, Gonpei’s daughter)
SI: He was actually able to erect such a majestic dam. That’s really incredible.
SC: That’s right!
SG: Even I’m impressed with him.
SO: I didn’t expect Ryoma to be so capable.
Harui: Oh I really want to see that dam built by Uncle Ryoma!
Misc: Me too. (Hachihei listens. He is quiet.)
(Raining, Ryoma walks down the street with umbrella, deep in thought.)
Proprietor: Thank you for your business!
(Hachihei leaves an izakaya/tavern. He looks drunk.)
R: Father! Father!
SH: Oh, Ryoma.
R: Are you drunk?
SH: No I’m not! (wobbles and falls on Ryoma) I’m OK.
R: How about this, let me give you a hand. Why did you go out drinking, Father?
SH: I used to be a bottomless pit. I’d never lose to anyone. Sometimes, I’d finish off all the sake in the shop.
R: This is the first time I heard about this.
SH: That was when you were just born. How time flies. It doesn’t come back. I got badly told off by Kou then.
SH: She said “Before Ryoma grows up into a man, you keep yourself alive! No fooling around!”
R: I see.
SH: And she just went like that. (pats Ryoma on the shoulder) I’m fine. This will do. I can walk by myself. (Hachihei turns to talk, finds Ryoma rooted to the spot.) What is it?
R: (Closes umbrella. Kneels down) Father, please let me go to Edo! This incident has made me fully understand that I had been living off other people’s help. I can’t go on like this. I want to try living by myself. I want to leave Tosa and experience the big world around us.
SH: ”To experience the big world around”…….. I will not let you go to Edo for a reason as vague as this! (Picks up the umbrella, opens it, then sits cross-legged on the mud in front of Ryoma) Ryoma (takes a letter out) If you want to go to Edo, Ryoma (hands him the letter) Then find a reason that I can accept! (the letter is addressed to Chiba Sadakichi) This is the referral letter written by Hineno sensei. Kenjutsu is your only strength. If you say you want to go to Edo to improve your skills, then I might not disapprove.
SH: Are you sure you can stand up to the strict training in Chiba dojo?
R: (pockets the letter) I can! I will not….I will not let Father down!
SH: A bushi (warrior) never goes back on his word.
SH: Go Ryoma! Get out of Tosa, go to Edo!
R: Father….Thank you very much! Thank you very much!
(Hachihei helps Ryoma up. Father and son walk off together.)
