(Ryoma and Mizobuchi reach Edo.)
R: So this is Edo!
MH: What a bustling place!
R: So many people!
Y: (narration) In the year Kaei 6 April, Sakamoto Ryoma and Mizobuchi Hironojo finally arrive at Edo. It was the 30th day after they left Tosa.
R: Everyone is so full of vitality! (laughs excitedly).
MH: In Edo, the merchants are more imposing than the samurai!
Episode 4 : Edo no Onikomachi (江户の鬼小町 The Demon Beauty of Edo)
[Tsukiji Tosa Clan Nakayashiki / Lodgings]
MH: So you’re finally starting your life in Edo, Ryoma
(Mizobuchi and Ryoma check out their room.)
(Ryoma laughs. Reaches out to touch the two opposite walls with his outstretched arms.)
R: Where do I…go to sleep?
MH: Open your wardrobe and stick your legs in. It seems the Kashi who comes to Edo from Tosa hasn’t ever seen the world. (laughs)
R: (looks in the wardrobe) Ah doesn’t matter. So be it (continues to unpack)
MH: What are your plans today, Ryoma?
R: What plans?
MH: I can take you to Asakusa if you want, or walk around Nihonbashi if you want, Edo has plenty of very exciting places (shows Ryoma pictures of women in a book)
R: (glances at the pictures, mouth open) No thanks, I’m here to refine my kenjutsu. That’s why I’ll be paying a visit to the Chiba dojo first.
Y: (narration) Speaking of Chiba dojo, the prestigious dojo of the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū* founded by Chiba Shusaku. Together with the Kyoshin Meichi Ryu and the Shinto Munen Ryu, they are known as the three biggest kenjutsu-styles in Edo.
R: Here it is! Here it is! (stops at the gate) This is where kendo masters from all over the country gather (rushes in)
(Ryoma is being led in. Hears children’s voices.)
Student: This is the main dojo (hall).
Student: This way.
(The sliding door opens. Ryoma sees children and women practicing, instructed by Chiba Jutaro)
More energy! (All: Yah!)
Straight ahead! (All: Yah!)
Yes! (All: Yah!)
Not bad! (All: Yah!)
That’s it! (All: Yah!)
Wring it…. (All: Yah!)
Like a cloth! (All: Yah!)
Yes! (All: Yah!) (sees Ryoma)
Very good! (All: Yah!) (runs over)
Go on! (All: Yah!)
CJ: (to Ryoma) Are you here to join the dojo?
R: Yes. I’m from Tosa, my name is Sakamoto Ryoma.(looking around at the students)
CJ: Oh! Sakamoto-kun! We’ve been expecting you. Come this way!
(Jutaro takes Ryoma to another part of the school.)
R: Excuse me……about the women and children just now…..?
CJ: They are our students. (Ryoma amazed, and curious. Peeks under the hanging lamps.) The number of women, children and merchants wanting to join us has increased lately. In any case, it’s a cause for celebration to have more students. To be honest, it’s not easy to operate a dojo in Edo.
R: What if you put a taiko (drum) in the dojo?
R: Training to the rhythm of the taiko*, the students are sure to enjoy themselves much more. And Chiba dojo will build up a good reputation from its inspiring practices.
CJ: Amazing! I never expected to meet a samurai who thinks like that. Would you be willing to teach the beginners with me?
R: Ah, that sounds great. But the reason I came all the way here from Tosa, was to learn the true Hokushin Ittō-Ryū style! (all smiles)
CJ: (smiles in defeat) So are you thinking, here at the famous Chiba dojo, it will be full of incredible people undergoing incredible types of training?
CJ: Well …. this is where it happens.
(Jutaro slides open a door to reveal a hall filled with fierce sparring, in groups instead of pairs. Ryoma enters, eyes wide. Jutaro talks to the master Chiba Sadakichi.)
CJ: Cease! (Students retreat to their places immediately.) Sakamoto-kun, you may present yourself to Chiba Sadakichi-sensei now.
R: (stunned by what he saw) …….Yes sir! (Sits in seiza /formally. Presents his letter of introduction) Tosa retainer, Sakamoto Ryoma, bearing the recommendation of our Hineno Benji sensei, I have come to pay my respects today. Also to sincerely beg Sensei to take me in as your student. Please allow my request! (bow)
CS: Then, let me see what you’ve got.
CS: (looks to the side) Oh, you will be his opponent please.
S: Yes sir.
R: A woman?!
(Sana wraps her head in a towel / tenugui. They face each other in full armour / bogu.)
(Ryoma starts the attacks but Sana is faster. She strikes him on the body and many times in succession. Ryoma caught by surprise, breathless, pushes her away and goes in for a second time. Sana counters, begins her series of attacks again. Ryoma pushes her away. Third time. Sana brings him down with a clean strike on the arm before he could finish his attack.)
CJ: Enough. (Ryoma still on the floor.) Sakamoto-kun. Back in position!
R: Yes sir (to Jutaro) One more try. Please allow me to start again.
CJ: Today is your first day. We will stop here.
R: No! One more time please!!
CS: Sakamoto-kun. Sana is my daughter.
CS: Not only you. No student here has been able to defeat her.
(Sana bows and returns to her place, expressionless. Ryoma looks at her, shocked and panting.)
(At the boarding house. Ryoma washes his face.)
R: I can’t believe there’s a woman even meaner than me. And I don’t think she’s that strong……..
MH: O’Sana-dono is very well known. They call her “Chiba no Onikomachi” (The Demon Beauty of Chiba)
R: Demon Beauty?
MH: A beauty to look at, but turns into a demon the moment she holds a sword in hand
R: That’s right. Hokushin Ittō-Ryū is such an incredible style! (starts practicing on his own)
(Young man practices kendo in a shabby looking frontyard. Takechi arrives.)
TH: Come to my place, Kichizou!
K: Takechi-san! (bows)
TH: I will teach you kenjutsu. (Takechi demonstrates with his katana.)
(To another man)
TH: Not only kenjutsu, I will also help you in your studies..
Man: Thank you!
(To a third)
TH: Let’s learn together, Katsutaro
Ka: Please instruct me! (bow)
(Takechi dojo has been transformed into a classroom. Takechi Hanpeita is teaching. Okada Izo and the old students are there too.)
TH: The country was founded on the basis of loyalty and filial piety. And so the Emperor committed the teachings of Amaterasu-ōmikami* to mind, and strives to fulfill our wishes.
(Sounds of awe in the classroom)
OI: The way Takechi-san explains is so simple and easy to understand.
Misc: If Izo can understand, that means everybody else will have no problem, right? (they laugh)
OI: What do you mean! That’s not true!
(On the streets.)
Woman: We don’t need bird cages, we only have chickens at home.
Y: You can use it for the chicks! Two for only 60 mon (turns to another passer-by) Would you like birdcages? (They walk on. He is frustrated.) How long do I have to go on like this?
TH: Yataro! A samurai selling birdcages, have you no pride? Why don’t you come over to my place too? I can teach you the classics “Kinshiroku” and “Nihon Gaishi”
Y: “Nihon Gaishi”? Stuff like that I know by heart a long time ago.
TH: Ho, you really put a lot of work in your studies. But a samurai needs know how to fight as well. You’ve been neglecting your kendo. Come and train with me, and be rid of your days of peddling birdcages…..
Y: When did you start having so much to say, Takechi-san? Could it be because Ryoma has gone to Edo? Of course, people prefer dojos taught by those who have learnt their skill from Edo. When Ryoma comes back and opens his dojo, you’ll be sidelined. So Takechi Hanpeita will get jealous too, how interesting! (walks off with a sneering laugh)
TH: (Yataro’s hit a nerve)
(At Chiba dojo. The students practise kata with a bokuto / wooden sword)
R: Father, Mother, Brother, how are you all? (The family read Ryoma’s letter. Everyone is there, even the cat.)
Ryoma has been training hard in kendo everyday here in Edo. (There are now two taiko drums in the main hall where the beginners train.)
Chiba dojo is even bigger and more prestigious than its reputation. Not only samurai, but children and merchants come to learn kenjutsu too. My training, however, is very intense. There are always bruises on my body and blisters on my hands and feet. But I’m not going to give up, I’m working hard every day
(CJ: ….your katana must point to the throat)
(Ryoma moves in for a closer view. Sana watches him.)
R: Father, Mother and to all my sisters, under the skies of Edo, Ryoma is putting in all I have.
SC: I can’t believe it was Ryoma-san who wrote this letter.
Harui: Exactly! (Ryoma’s father Hachihei looking very smug.)
SG: It seems he’s a bit more reliable now.
SI: I wouldn’t call that just “a bit”! (Hachihei is nodding. But Otome looks disappointed.)
SO: What does he mean by that! (The family gets up to leave immediately.) What ?!!! What did he go to Edo for?!
(Ryoma practising by himself. Sweat all over. Can’t get his legwork right.)
CJ: Still can’t let it go? Your loss to Sana. (Ryoma smiles in acknowledgement.) She is the true product of Chiba Sadakichi.
CJ: Before she could walk, Father had put a shinai in her hands. “You don’t need to bother with the dojo’s matters. Just focus on uncovering the essence of Hokushin Ittō-Ryū” like that. She truly sees herself as the face of Chiba dojo.
R: If that’s the case, then of course no-one can defeat her. (smiles wryly) But then again, to have a woman as a role-model to work towards, is also very interesting in itself.
CJ: (looks at Ryoma in admiration) Sakamoto-kun, with sword in hand, you must open your senses to all directions.
CJ: But that also means, you must look at nothing.
R: Look at nothing?
(Jutaro spills a basket of soy beans on the floor.)
CJ: Slide as you move, don’t step on the beans.
R: Uh….I understand….(shakes beans off his toes)
CJ: No looking down!
R: Yes sir.
(Tries to slide forward but fails. Cries out in pain. Jutaro chuckles.)
CJ: Keep going, Sakamoto-kun! (walks off)
R: Thank you for your guidance! (Wipes beads off feet. Starts again.) Don’t look down when you move. (One foot forward. Steps on beads. Tries not to look.) Don’t look down when you move. (voice trembling. Another step. Grimaces in pain.) Don’t look down when you move. (Calls out in pain. No go.) That hurts!
(In the yard. Ryoma washes his face and body. Sana walks out. Sees him wiping up.)
R: Oh, I was just practicing by myself.
S: Please use the well in the dojo to wipe your body.
R: Oh……I’m so sorry (pulls his clothes back on.) O’Sana-sama, can I ask you something?
S: What is it?
R: Ah, O’Sana-sama, have you been like this all the time? (she looks at him) No, I mean like laughing out loud until your stomach hurts, or passing out on the floor after you’re drunk…..
S: (expressionless) Never.
R: Oh……you’re so different from Otome-nee (sis) It’s hard to believe that both of you are also women.
R: Yes! My sister in Tosa. She’s been stronger than a boy since she was a kid. They call her “The Sakamoto Family O’Niosama” (demon-like deity)* I don’t know how many times she’s made me cry all these years (laughs)
S: (still expressionless) What a happy family (walks off)
R: Looks like I bored her with my talk.
(Later Ryoma returns home. He’s very happy and excited.)
R: I’ve got a letter! Otome-nee’s written me …..a letter!
SO: Ryoma, I have read your letter. (Ryoma nods) Father, Mother and everybody here are very pleased.
SO: But I don’t accept it.
SO: Did you leave Tosa just for kenjutsu training? What happened to that important goal of experiencing the big wide world? Don’t ever forget your original intention.
R: Eh? That’s it? (flips letter to check)
MH: What’s the matter?
R: (whine) Otome-nee, for crying out loud!
(Mizobuchi reads the letter)
MH: What a terrifying sister you have.
R: (slaps the floor) This kenjutsu training is enough to keep me exhausted already! Really!
MH: (hits the floor with shinai) Cannot!
MH: If this goes on, you’ll just end up like a narrow-minded thug. Your sister’s right. You’ve made it to Edo, how can you not open yourself to things outside of kendo!
R: Even so….
MH: Cannot! Cannot! Cannot! Cannot! Cannot! (smile) I’ll teach you, a world you know nothing about (smile)
(At an ageya / brothel)
R: Is this the world I know nothing about?
MH: (Laugh) The women here, as long as you’re willing to pay, they’ll go upstairs to sleep with you
R: Sleep together?
Waitress: Sorry to keep you waiting. Ths is your Namasu and Nishime* (She looks straight at Ryoma, who looks away)
MH: Let’s go!
R: No! Definitely not! Father said specifically, “do not be engrossed with women”!
MH: Ryoma, you’ll never become an adult like this.
R: I’m here to eat my food! (Starts to eat.)
MH: Fine, I’ll go up myself then.
(Mizobuchi whispers to the mamasan.)
MH: (to Ryoma) Enjoy your food.
(goes upstairs followed by the waitress from before)
R: (peeks at them going up) Oh it’s true then……sleeping together
KK: You are remarkable! Compared to playing with women, you’d rather stick to your pledge to your father. What a truly remarkable man you are!
KK: Oi! Oi! Oi! (moves to Ryoma’s table) Brother, are you a Tosa retainer?
KK: I could tell from your accent.
R: I’m a student at Chiba dojo in Oke-machi.
KK: I’m at Saito dojo.
R: Saito?! You came to Edo to train in kenjutsu too?
KK: (sits up formally) Chosu retainer, Katsura Kogoro at your service.
R: (does the same) I’m Sakamoto Ryoma from Tosa.
(They bow in greeting. Ryoma pours sake for Katsura)
KK: Thank you.
R: Well….what’s with that moustache? (Katsura has a huge painted imperial moustache on his face)
KK: So are you only interested in the moustache?
R: No…… After I left Tosa, that was the first time I realized how big Japan really is. This city of Edo is really…..
KK: What did you just say?
R: It was only after I left Tosa that I realized how big Japan…..
KK: (loud voice) The world is a thousand times bigger than Japan!! In this world, there are many countries which are more civilized and advanced than Japan, Sakatomo-kun. America, England, France, Russia….America (getting very drunk)
R: My name is Sakamoto.
KK: Before long, they’ll have their eyes on Japan. This is not the time to play with women on the second floor!
(Mizobuchi Hironojo is in a game with Shino. Both are scantily dressed. Mizobuchi loses)
Shino: Third time!
MH: I lost again!
Shino: Oh sir, you are so weak!
MH: No you’re good. (gets a big imperial moustache painted on his face.)
Shino: Oh, I’m sorry you lost!
(Outside, Ryoma goes to a soba stall)
R: Excuse me, can I have one bowl please?
Owner: Sure. (Ryoma crouches by the fire to keep warm.)
R: They have their eyes on Japan? (laugh) If that really happens, wouldn’t the invincible Bakufu do something about it?
Y: (narration) As he said, in fact, the Bakufu had made their move a long time ago.
[Edo-jo, Edo Castle]
Y: It was just that we knew nothing about it.
(The Council of Elders hold another secret meeting.
They include Chief senior councillor, Abe Masahiro; Joui party “Expel foreigners”, Kuze Hirochika; Kaikoku party “Open the country”, Matsudaira Tadakata; Matsudaira Noriyasu and Hisen party “No war”, Makino Tadamasa)
AM: The American fleet is almost upon us.
KH: We must line up the cannons in front of Edo immediately.
MT: Where are we going to get that many cannons?
MN: We’ll have to call all the clans to send them in.
MkT: But we must not divulge our national affairs….
AM: Gentlemen, if we instigate war with the Americans, Japan does not stand any chance of winning.
KH: Isenokami-sama! (Official title. He is called Abe “Isenokami” Masahiro.)
AM: We must protect the Empire of Japan. So, we must discuss this with the daimyo and work together to defend against the enemy.
[Tosa, Takechi dojo]
(Takechi trains his students in Iaido* with real swords now. )
Y: (narration) What’s infuriating, was that Hanpeita’s private school was filled with energy.
(At Yataro’s home)
Y: (narration) But in comparison, I was….
(Yajiro stretches his arm in pain.)
Y: What is it, Father?
IY: I want to go into the fields today, I haven’t touched a plough for a long time.
Y: You finally want to do some work?
IY: But you see, my shoulder’s dislocated (chuckle) It’s all in your hands, Yataro.
Yanosuke: I’m hungry
Saki: Bear with it Yanosuke. We haven’t got a single grain of wheat or rice left.
IY: (to his wife Miwa) My stomach’s been rumbling like thunder for some time too.
IM: I know already. I’ll go pick some grass.
Y: No! We can’t go on like this!
IY: What are you on about?
Y: I’m going to open a private school too!
IW: Private school?
Y: I want the world to know that I, Iwasaki Yataro, am right here. That’s it.
(Miwa smiles and goes out. Yataro hears a gurgling sound. Yajiro has fallen asleep.)
[Iwasaki Yataro Private School]
(A handful of children are there. Scratching themselves all over. There are flies everywhere.)
Y: “The unofficial historian says”….Tamegoro, read the last part again.
T: I….I…read….old….(吾讀舊志…….Nihon Gaishi “The Unofficial History of Japan” Chapter 1)
Y: That’s fine. Tsurukichi….
Tsu: (giggle) Old…Old…(giggle)
Y: That’s fine. That’s fine (throws book down) Why am I stuck with idiots like you?!
HK: Excuse me.
Y: Who’s that? (to the students) Stop scratching!
HK: I’ve declined the marriage proposal.
Y: Marriage proposal?
HK: My lessons in tea, flowers and the ichigenkin, I’ve stopped them all.
Y: (to his students) What are you looking at! Go back to your seats! (to Kao) What do you mean?
HK: Iwasaki-sama! Please …… tutor me in knowledge and studies!
HK: Please teach me! (bows)
Y: (cannot believe his ears) A dream……This must be a dream! (imagines himself pinching his own face) Ow! Ow! Ow!….(imagines himself jumping up and down) Dawn has broken!!!
(At Chiba dojo. Sana is outside the main hall. She hears the taiko and voices calling in unison. Goes to investigate.)
R: That’s it! That’s it!
(She sees the students enjoying themselves, practicing to the rhythm of the taiko. Ryoma is the instructor.)
R: That’s right! That’s right! Very good! Yes! (Ryoma spots Sana at the door. Walks to her.) Everyone, stop! Stop! Stop for a while. This is the daughter of Chiba Sadakichi-sensei, O’Sana-samachan!
(The students rush to see her. Sana is taken aback. Ryoma steps in front shielding her from the horde.)
R: Step back a bit, people! Come on! Come, greet her nicely.
Misc: Good Morning!
S: Good Morning!
(Some students scream in response to Sana.)
R: (to Sana) I’ve taken over the morning practice.
S: I see.
R: Listen up, everyone! This O’Sana-sama, is terrifyingly strong. There is no-one here in Chiba dojo who can defeat her.
(The students scream in wonder.)
S: Sakamoto-san, that’s not true! (Ryoma laughs.)
Misc: Sensei! Please let me see sensei’s sword play! I want to see it too! Me too! Please! Please show us!
R: OK! OK! OK! OK! Stand back, stand back! (The students all call for Sana) What a headache! Well, O’Sana-sama, just a teeny demonstration……(everyone looks at her expectantly.)
S: So, this is Men Uchi (Front head strike) (Sana and Ryoma stand at the front of the hall.) Keep a 70% hold on the left hand, 30% on the right. Your grip must not be too tight, or too loose. Wrists unlocked. As you strike (lifts shinai) grip your hands like wringing a cloth (strike)
R: Like wringing a cloth (strike)
(Ryoma and Sana take turns to strike, one after the other. The students call out in rhythm with them. )
R: That’s it! Very good!
(The students practice with the taiko. Sana stays on to watch. She is smiling, as is everyone else in the hall.)
R: That’s right! That’s right! Very good!
(Ryoma and Sana play the taiko. Sana smiles excitedly, thoroughly enjoying herself. Chiba Sadakichi listens from his room, looking worried. He sighs.)
(Later, Ryoma and Sana clean themselves at the well.)
R: (laugh) Everybody is very grateful to you today. Thank you very much!
S: I enjoyed it too.
R: This is the first time I see it. O’Sana-sama’s smile (laugh)
S: (turns expressionless) Well done today. (walks off)
R: What’s wrong with letting me see that expression occasionally?
[Kaei 6 (1853) June]
Y: (narration) But then in the year Kaei 6, 1853, June, the unthinkable happened.
(In Chiba Sadakichi’s room)
S: Father, I have brought your Dô (body armour)
CS: Come in. Sana.
CS: If, I were your enemy, would you be able to cut me down, without hesitation?
CS: Could you?
S: Why do you ask me that?
CS: What if it were Sakamoto Ryoma? Could you? Cut him?
S: No matter who my opponent is, I would be able to kill him.
CS: (long look at Sana) No you cannot. You can no longer defeat Sakamoto any more.
S: What are you saying? How can I lose…
CS: I am not…. reprimanding you now. Ever since you were young, I have been teaching you the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū. But you are after all……..a woman. The time has finally come when I can no longer ignore this fact.
S: Father, I live only for kenjutsu and nothing else. I do not want to hear Father speak of such things to me (leaves)
(Ryomo practices in the dojo by himself, with a thick piece of wood. Sana arrives.)
S: Sakamoto-san, please have a duel with me. (Proceeds to get her bōgu / armour set)
S: Put your bōgu on.
R: What’s the matter?
S: There is no need to show mercy, I want an earnest fight.
R: Wait a moment.
S: Move it!
(Gets a shinai. Throws to Ryoma who catches it perfectly.)
R: Why all of a sudden……
S: I am not going to lose to you.
R: (sigh) I don’t want to fight. Not with O’Sana-sama. I won’t fight you. (wry smile)
S: Because I’m…… a woman?
R: At the end of the day, the sword is a tool for killing enemies in a war.
S: (agitated) There is no difference between men and women in a war!
(strikes at Ryoma with shinai)
R: (ducks, backs off) O’Sana-sama!!
(Sana strikes. Ryoma defends himself with his big piece of wood. Sana’s shinai bounces off. Ryoma throws the wood down, afraid that he will hurt her. Sana feels even more insulted, strikes again. Ryoma stops her with his bare hands. Snatches the shinai from her, throws it away and brings her down with a Judo leg swipe.)
R: (shouts) If this were war, O’Sana-sama would be dead by now!! (realizes he might have hurt her) Oh no! (leans in to check her head) Did you hit your head? O’Sana-sama! Are you alright?
S: Why…… (tears run down her face) do I have to be…… a woman? Why? (Jutaro passes by outside, sees the two and hides to watch.)
(Ryoma realizes he is pinning Sana down. Lets go of her and sits to one side formally.)
R: What are you saying?! I have never seen a woman who looks as awe inspiring as O’Sana-sama! The reverence you inspire was no doubt tempered through your pursuit in kendo! This is something no-one can imitate! This is something that belongs only to O’Sana-sama!! O’Sana-sama, to me you look really striking and dazzling. (pulls her up by the shoulders) “It would be great if I weren’t a woman.” You must never say discouraging things like that! (realizes he’s got his hands on her. Moves back at once.) What on earth was I doing?
S: I am not weak at all. You’re…. just too strong. I am not weak at all (her tears have stopped.)
R: (with an admiring look) That’s right. O’Sana-sama is very strong. Even stronger than Otome-nee!
S: Stronger than O’Niosama?
R: That’s right. The Sakamoto Family O’Niosama!
(They both laugh. Jutaro smiles from outside.)
CJ: Shhhh!! (Ryoma hears him)
Misc: Just now….Just now….
CJ: Be quiet! Quiet!
Misc: Something serious has happened in town! (Ryoma strains to listen)
Misc: They say a big terrifying foreign ship has appeared in Uraga! (Both Ryoma and Sana are listening now.)
S: Foreign ship?
CJ: Where is it from? England? Where? (Ryoma runs out to check)
Misc: I’m not sure about the rest……
(Four big ships appear near the shore.)
Misc: Look ! Look at that! (points to the ships) They’re all black. Black ships!
(Ryoma runs out in the street. Chaos. People panic everywhere.)
