(Four large black ships sail close to shore)
Y : (narration) Kaei 6, 1853, June. An American squadron of 4 ships commanded by Perry showed up at Uraga.*
Misc : Black ships!
(America East-India Squadron Commodore Matthew C. Perry)
CP : Hello Japan!
Y : (narration) This news reached Edo-jo at once.
<Edo-jo, Edo Castle>
(Uraga Magistrate Ido Hiromichi interrupts a meeting of the Council of Elders.)
IH : Urgent news, my Lord. The American fleet commanded by Perry has arrived. They are now berthed off Uraga. There are a total of 4 vessels. Two ships carry on them 20 cannons each. Another has a few dozen. The last carries 40 cannons. We heard that Perry has brought with him a letter from the King of America.
MN : They want to take over Japan as well.
AM: Uraga Magistrate. Find a way to deal with it first.
IH : Yes my Lord.
AM: In the meantime, let us think of a strategy. Just try and buy as much time as you can!
(At the Japanese-American negotiation.)
Y : (narration) The Japanese-American negotiations took place on board the USS Susquehanna. But, Perry did not take part. He had planned his absence as a tactic against the Japanese side, thereby securing an advantage for themselves in the negotiations.
(U.S. Dutch Interpretor Anton Portman and Flag Lieutenant John Contee meet with Uraga Magistracy Yoriki i.e. Police Officer Nakajima Saburosuke and Interpreter Hori Tatsunosuke)
AP : (in Dutch) Wij zijn hier gekomen om een persoonlijke brief van de President van de Verenigde Staten van Amerika te overhandigen.
HT : “We bring a personal letter from the President of the United States of America.”
NS : We cannot accept this letter.
(At the Council of Elders)
IH : News from Uraga! Perry said if we refuse to accept that letter, he will land his troops and head straight for Edo.
Elder : Attack Edo?
AM : As a precaution, we should upscale the defense along the Edo shoreline. Send word out immediately to all daimyo to defend Edo!
IH : Yes my Lord!
(At the Armoury. Ryoma, Mizobuchi and other volunteers unload boxes of weapons.)
MH : If things turn bad, we might really have a war!
R : War?
MH : To fight with America! You better get your armour set* ready, Ryoma!
R : Armour?!
Y : (narration) After more than 200 years of peace, the samurai have long discarded their armour.
(Samurai armour shop crowded with people.)
R : How do we put these on?! (holds up a mail coat) I’ll have this one!
Episode 5 : Kurofune to Ken (黑船と剣 The Black Ships and the Sword)
(Civilian militia undergo training in fighting. Others move cannons in position.)
(Ryoma and Mizobuchi help to push a heavy temple bell into the camp.)
R : (panting) What’s the use of this temple bell on the beach?
MH : Apparently, it will look like a cannon to the black ships.
R : A cannon?!
Y : (narration) Unfortunately, many people were just running about blindly. But, in Uraga…
(Second Japanese-American meeting. Uraga Magistracy Yoriki / Police Officer Kayama Eizaemon and Interpreter Hori Tatsunosuke meet with John Contee and Anton Portman.)
KE : In any case, we hope you can go to Nagasaki first. And we can discuss the personal letter there.
HT : (in Dutch) “Hoe dan ook, ga eerst naar Nagasaki, daarna kunnen wij praten over deze brief….”
AP: (in English) “Anyway, please go to Nagasaki fir….”
JC : (in English) If you do not accept this letter right now, we will regard it as a national insult!
AP: (in Dutch) “Als jullie nu niet meteen deze brief accepteren, zullen wij dit opvatten al seen nationale belediging”
HT : “If you do not accept the personal letter now, we will regard it as an insult to our country.”
KE : In any case, please go to Nagasaki.
JC : (slams fist on table, in English) Accept the letter!
AP: (in Dutch) “Accepteer de brief”
HT : “Accept this personal letter”
KE : Please go to Nagasaki.
Y : (narration) The American side was losing its patience.
(At the seaside. Mizobuchi and Ryoma stand guard with many others. Mizobuchi yawns.)
MH : I wonder if he’s still at Uraga, that Perry.
R : Are there cannons on the Black Ships?
MH : They say one ship alone carries dozens of them.
R : Won’t the ships sink with all that weight?
MH : I guess they’re so big they won’t sink.
R : Hmm…I want to have a look.
MH : What?
R : (looks at Mizobuchi) We can’t go into a war without better intelligence on the enemy.
MH : The only thing we need to do is to stand guard here!
R : What difference does it make with one less guard…(Leaves his post)
MH : Oi! Don’t go!
(Ryome turns back to Mizobuchi)
R : I came to Edo to learn about the world! I want to see what the Black Ships look like with my own eyes (sneaks off)
MH : Ryoma! Oi!!
(In the USS Susquehanna cabin. Flag lieutenant John Contee reports on the meeting to Commodore Perry.)
JC : Sir, they stubbornly keep on insisting that we should go to Nagasaki.
MP : Goddamn! Take the Mississippi up Edo Bay.
JC : Yes sir!
Y : (narration) And this strategy of Perry’s will unexpectedly change Ryoma’s destiny….
(Ryoma in the woods, near the sea. Spies an encampment in front.)
Misc : What are you doing here?
R : Oh! I….I wanted to check out at what’s happening in Uraga…
Misc : Which daimyo are you a vassal of? Report you name!
R : Hold…Hold on!
(Other militia arrive.)
Misc : What’s going on?
R : Aren’t you supposed to be preparing for the war with the Black Ships? I’m not your enemy, it’s those foreigners!
Misc : (to his mates) This man looks suspicious.
R : Huh?
Misc : Take him back to camp!
(Ryoma gets ready to unsheathe his katana, suddenly turns and runs.)
Misc : Stand there! Dammit! Get him! Get him quick!
(Ryoma gets away, hides behind the rocks by the water. Gets splashed by waves. Lies on the rocks to rest. Suddenly he hears a sound. Katsura Kogoro is also hiding there.)
KK : Oh! (ducks behind a rock)
R : Oh…Katsura-san? Aren’t you Katsura Kogoro-san? Don’t you remember me? We met at the meishuya (drinking house/brothel) in Shinagawa.
KK : Meishuya?
R : The one where you can get women to sleep with you on the second floor.
KK : Eh?
R : It’s Sakamoto Ryoma!
KK : Oh! The one from Tosa!
R : Yes!!
KK : What are you doing here?
R : To look at the black ships!
KK : Me too.
R : Is that so? (they both laugh.)
KK : Sh….
R : It’s just like Katsura-san said. I can’t believe the Black Ships really came.
KK : I’m shocked as well. Whatever I told you, was taken straight from Shōin-sensei’s mouth*.
R : Shōin-sensei?
KK : He’d seen this coming long ago. (They hear a ship’s horn, loud.)
R : Huh? What was that?!
KK : What is it?
(Katsura and Ryoma climb over the rocks towards the sound. The Mississippi* slowly sails into view round the corner, approaching the men up close. They clearly see the rigging, the side paddle wheel, the black smoke from the funnel. Ryoma and Katsura are terrified. Ryoma unsheathes his katana and cries out involuntarily.)
KK : So this is ….. the Black Ship. (Ryoma is still screaming, clutching his sword.) Sakamoto-kun!
(They are splashed by the waves. Ryoma comes to his senses. They watch the Mississippi sail away.)
R : What monstrous ship was that? Billowing smoke as it goes. How can it even move with no sails?
KK : That was a steam ship. They burn coal on board to make steam, which pushes something like a water wheel to paddle the ship forward.
R : It’s all black!
KK : I think to stop rusting, they cover it with a black substance called “tar”.
R : It’s just so big…..I can’t imagine something like that really exists in this world!
(Sits down. Both men are stunned by what they just witnessed.)
(At Edo-jo. Uraga Magistrate, Ido Hiromichi, passes a box to Chief senior councillor, Abe Masahiro.)
Y : (narration) In the face of Perry’s threat of war, the Bafuku finally relented and were forced to accept the President’s letter.
(The Council of Elders look at the handwritten letter. On board the ship, Perry talks to his parrot.)
CP : See you again next year. I look forward to your reply.
Parrot : Japan~~
Y : (narration) And so, ended the 10 days of turmoil brought about by the Black Ships. (The ships sail off.) However, the credibility of the Bakufu which had never been questioned all these years, is now being doubted by many people.
(Street merchants sell pictures of Perry and the foreigners. Many want to buy it.)
Merchant: This is the one they call Perry! He looks just like a demon! This is the leader of the Black Ships!
Crowd : He looks frightening. I want one! I want it.
<Tosa, Takechi dojo>
Y : (narration) And the same in Tosa, …..
(Okada Izo has stuck a picture of Perry to a straw man. Takechi Hanpeita, Hirai Shujiro and the rest of the friends are there.)
OI : If I were there, I’d sneak in on a sampan, and cut him down in two strikes! (Hits the straw man with shinai.)
Misc : Yeah! That’s right!
HS : What does the Bakufu think they’re doing?!
Misc : Exactly!
TH : If we let those foreigners in and desecrate the holy soil of Japan, it will be utter disrespect for our Emperor in Kyo!
Misc : They say that Perry is going to return, Takechi-san, what do you think we should do?
TH : When that comes….we will fight!
Misc : Yes!!
TH : Start your practice now!
Misc : Yes sir!!
(At Yataro’s school. Hirai Kao is there. The other students crowd around Perry’s picture.)
HK : That’s terrible!
Y : And that means America is forcing Japan to open our country.
HK : Open the country? (Yataro nods.)
Student : Sensei, is this a demon?
Y : (still looking at Kao) That’s a man (to Kao) But the English took over Manchu China after they opened their country.
HK : What will happen to Japan?
Student : Why are the eyes blue then?
Y : (continues to look at Kao) I don’t know (to Kao) This is the time they need brilliant people like me!
HK : (wide smile) I agree!
(At the Hirai residence. Kao returns home from school. Looks relieved when she does not see her brother Shujiro. Slides open her room door. Shujiro is waiting for her.)
HS : Kao, have you been going to Yataro’s place all this time?
HK : I’m only asking him to teach me in my studies.
HS : Why do you want to learn all of a sudden?
HK : Because I want to know more about the world.
HS : The world? What good does that do for you?
HK : “After you’ve declined Karaki-sama’s proposal, no-one will want to marry you now” isn’t that what Brother said yourself?
HS : Eh?
HK : Well, maybe I’ll need to live by myself in future. It won’t do if I don’t know anything about the world then (puts away her books)
HS : I’m worried about you!
HK : Please don’t treat me like a little child anymore, big brother!
(Shujiro stunned, goes out. Kao thinks about Ryoma’s parting words.)
R : I….like you. But, I want to see more of the world now. (Kao, eyes red.)
<Edo. Chiba dojo.>
CJ : Next group! (The students are in paired practice.) Cease! Next group! (approaches Ryoma) What’s the matter? Sakamoto-kun. You seem very slow these few days.
R : I probably have a cold.
CJ : So what if you have a cold?! How can a Samurai be beaten by something as trivial as that?
R : Yes sir.
CJ : (goes back to the training) Cease! Next group.
(Ryoma takes his men / helmet off. Chiba Sadakichi is watching him. Later, Ryoma drinks from the well. Thinks about his encounter with the Black Ship. Shakes his head.)
R : Cannot! Cannot, cannot.
S : Well….
R : (turns around to see Sana in kimono) O’Sana-sama! Oh, it really fits you! This is the first time I see O’Sana-sama dressed like this.
S : (very embarrassed) You’re teasing me!
R : …….No! That’s not what I meant……
(Pause. Sana walks over. Gives something to Ryoma.)
S : Here, this kintsubayaki* was given to me. You can give it try if you don’t mind.
R : For me?
S : No-one eats it at home. You don’t need to force yourself if you don’t like it.
R : Oh, no! Thank you. I accept it with gratitude! (formally takes the pack from Sana)
S : Why were you saying “Cannot”?
R : Eh?
S : Just now, you kept saying “Cannot Cannot”
R : Oh ! That! I was just admiring how profoundly deep the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū is (pretends to laugh)
S : Sakamoto-san. Why are you lying?
R : (smile disappears) In truth……I saw the Black Ship
S : Black Ship?
R : I’m feeling …very confused now. Compared to that monster, the katana is nothing at all. If we do start a war with other countries, sword styles won’t be any use at all.
S : What are you talking about? Didn’t you come to Edo to further your kendo?
R : Yes, but …….
S : You are in Chiba dojo now…Saying that sword styles are no use….If Father or Brother should ever hear you, you won’t be able to stay here anymore! Whatever happens, you must never say something like that!
R : (nods) I’m terribly sorry. (Bows) I’ll go home now. (tries to leave, takes the wrong way, turns around to go. Sana looks at him, concerned.)
(At the boarding house, Ryoma draws a picture of the Black Ship. Mizobuchi eats Sana’s kintsubayaki.)
MH : Yum! This tastes really good, Ryoma! She’s no doubt the daughter of Chiba dojo, what generosity! Come have some, Ryoma.
R : Does it look like … this here?
MH : What are you drawing? The Black Ship again?!
R : I’m seeing it all the time. What can I do?
MH : I know you’re shaken after you saw the Black Ship. But if you let yourself go on like this, you won’t be able to focus on your sword any more. (Ryoma looks at Mizobuchi, he doesn’t know what to do.)
(Sana in her room, sewing. She thinks about Ryoma’s words.)
R : If we do start a war with other countries, sword styles won’t be any use at all.
CJ : Sana, can I come in?
S : Brother, please do. (Jutaro enters.)
CJ : Are you hiding something from me?
S : Huh?
CJ : You gave the kintsuba to Sakamoto, didn’t you? You knew that was my favourite!
S : What are you trying to say?
CJ : Suddenly taking up sewing and chado (way of tea), is it all because of Sakamoto? Have you fallen in love with him? (Sana looks at Jutaro eyes wide.) Answer me, Sana!
S : I don’t know….
CJ : You don’t know?
S : I found I can’t look at Sakamoto-san in the same way anymore. What’s really happening, I don’t understand it myself either.
CJ : Sana! That means you have feelings of love for Sakamoto!
S : Eh?
CJ : (starts to cry) For someone who was brought up like a boy, you finally…..There is nothing that can make Big Brother happier!
S : Wait please, Brother…..
CJ : Sakamoto is not bad. If you two get married, he can help me to run Chiba dojo together….
S : Married?
CJ : Leave it to me, Sana! I will help you bring your love to fruition! (excitedly runs out)
S : Brother! (Sana feels her flushed face.)
<Choshu Clan Residence>
(Ryoma is being led in)
Misc : This is Katsura-san’s room.
R : Thank you. (Calls in) Katsura-san! It’s Sakamoto. Sakamoto Ryoma from Tosa.
KK : What is it?
R : There is something I need to seek Katsura-san’s advice on.
KK : (pause) Come in.
R : (enters the room) I’m sorry for the sudden visit.
KK : (his back to Ryoma) What is it you want to ask?
R : Did it mean nothing to you, Katsura-san? Seeing the Black Ship? Can you live your life just like before?…..Katsura-san!
KK : There is no-one in this world who can look upon that thing, and still be the same! (turns around)
R : Look at your face!
KK : (dark rings under the eyes) Ever since that day I’ve been unable to sleep. Everytime I close my eyes, I see that monster coming towards me!
R : Me too!
KK : Japan can no longer stay the same, Sakamoto-kun. Perhaps everything we know will change.
R : Everything we know will change, meaning….
KK : You know the term “Joui” (expel the foreigners)*?
R : “Joui”?
KK : It means “a determination to stop Japan from being taken over by foreign countries”.
R : But that goes without saying!
KK : Even so, “Japan is unable to remain secluded anymore. Whether it is America, Russia or France, we must accept them all.”
R : Really?
KK : It was my teacher Sakuma Shōzan-sensei* who said this.
KK : (stands up) “No! Associating with foreigners is beyond my imagination!” It was my kenjutsu master and good friend Saito Shintaro who said this.
R : Then, what does Katsura-san think?
KK : I don’t know….
R : Eh?
KK : What is the right way? I have no idea at all. What would you do if there’s something you don’t understand?
R : What should we do?
KK : Your studies! Without knowledge, how can we tell from right or wrong? (Ryoma nods) That’s why I’m desperately reading up now!
R : Katsura-san, actually I’m very confused too. I don’t know whether I should continue with my kenjutsu training. Everything we know might be changing, right? If that’s the case, what value is there in continuing with the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū?
KK : Are you going to abandon your sword? That means abandoning your samurai status too. These are important matters pertaining to your own way of existence, do not ask others what to do.
Y : (narration) At this time, the Bakufu in Edo, had finally translated the letter from the American president into Japanese. (Abe Masahiro reads the letter) However…
(An aide rushes in. Whispers in his ear.)
AM : What?!!
Y : (narration) Was it because of the Black Ships? No-one knows, but the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyoshi-sama suddenly passed away. His fourth son Iesaki-sama inherited the shogunate (Iesaki chases ducks around in Edo-jo.) That’s right, the one who was rumoured to be a hopeless fool, later became Tokugawa Iesada-sama. The Chief Elder, Abe “Isenokami” Masahiro* finally made an unprecedented decision.
(The Elders address the Daimyo.)
AM : “One. That America and Japan should live in friendship, have a commericial relationship with each other, and no other intentions. Two….”
Y : (narration) Abe Masahiro disclosed the entire contents of the American President’s letter* openly to the diamyo of the feudal domains.
AM : “…..should be of great benefit to both countries.” These are the requests from America. Shall we accept these terms, and decide to open up our country? Or, be prepared to go into battle and enforce our Saikoku (Closed Country) Policy strictly without exception? I hope you can express your opinions on this without reservation.
Y : (narration) The daimyo were understandably shocked. After all, in 250 years of Tokugawa rule, this was the first time the Bakufu had sought their political opinion.
(Takechi Hanpeita writing a long letter)
Y : (narration) And this move lighted a fire in the hearts of intellectuals across every domain. Everyone started to talk about the future of Japan
TT : What are you writing?
TH : My views regarding the Black Ships (Tomi smiles.)
(Yataro is also writing a long letter at home. The entire family are there - his father Yajiro, mother Miwa, sister Saki and brother Yanosuke)
IY : What are you writing about all this time?
Y : My analysis. I’m sending it in.
Saki : To the castle?
IM : Are you going to submit your opinions to the Lord?
IY : What a stupid thing to do! Will you get any money for that?
Y : Stop bugging me!
<Kochi-jo. Kochi castle>
(The Tosa daimyo Lord Yamauchi Toyoshige, aka Yodo goes through the submissions.)
Y : (narration) And so the submissions collected here, became tools for the selection of new personnel for the Tosa regime.
YT : Yoshida Toyo.*
Toyo : Here.
YT : Your submission is very impressive. You have presented in detail what we, in the Tosa Domain, should do and at this point in time in Japan.
Toyo : Thank you, my Lord.
YT : A talent like yours should not be wasted on breeding horses. How about it? Don’t you want to join the administration? Put your abilities in my hands, Toyo!
Toyo : I am truly grateful, my Lord.
Official: Takechi Hanpeita.
(Takechi bows low. He kneels outside the house with the other Kashi.)
TH : Yes sir!
Official: My Lord says your submission was very well written. Use this encouragement and continue with your dedication and commitment.
(Lord Yamauchi rises and walks out to look at Takechi.)
TH : I am very grateful, my Lord! (Lord Yamauchi walks off expressionless.)
(Later, Takechi returns home.)
TH : Grandmother! Tomi!
TT : Welcome home. (Takechi rushes in to see his grandmother Chi.)
TH : I was commended! My Lord has read my submission.
TC : What an honour!
TH : My Lord…..My Lord is a brilliant man!
TT : Omaesan (My dear husband)!
TC : (in tears) What a great honour!
Y : Hanpeita?
(At Yataro’s school.)
HK : I heard he was summoned to the castle and was commended by the Lord.
Student : Didn’t sensei send in yours too?
Y : I….didn’t do it.
HK : Why not? Or Iwasaki-sensei would have been….
Y : I’ll hand in my views, when we see greater things happening in the world.
(Yataro turns away from his students. He is devastated.)
(At the Sakamoto residence. Otome practises hard with a naginata*. Gonpei comes out.)
SG : Wow, nobody would have guessed you’re a woman from your energy!
SO : What is it, brother?
SG : Ryoma has written back.
(Otome is delighted. Hachihei finishes Ryoma’s letter and smiles proudly. The rest of the family gather around. Gonpei takes over.)
SG : (reading) Mmm?
SO : Brother, what did Ryoma say?
SG : He said, if we do go to war with other countries, he’ll cut off those foreign heads and bring them back to Tosa.
SO : Ryoma said that? (Gonpei hands the letter to Otome.)
SC : (reading over Gonpei’s shoulder) It’s true!
SI : How brave he is!
SH : You don’t need to feel so impressed with such a small thing. As a samurai, it’s our duty to do that.
SG : That’s right!
SO : Cut off foreign heads….?*
(Edo. At the boarding house. Ryoma reads a letter from Otome.)
SO : You said in your letter that you will cut off foreign heads and bring them back. Everyone was very happy to hear that. But, Sis feels it doesn’t sound like something that you would say. It’s good that you are thinking about Japan and our country’s affairs. But I don’t believe you’d want to take part in the war. Learning about the world, does not mean doing what other people do, Ryoma. You need to find your own way of life. And only by doing so, will you be able find out what purpose you may serve in life.
R : (lies down) You’re right, Sis. What I said in that letter wasn’t real. My own way of life…..what could it be?
(Ryoma walks dejectedly back to Chiba dojo. Stops at the gate.)
R : (to himself) Go! (walks in)
(In the practice hall, the students face Chiba Sadakichi. Chiba Jutaro and Sana stand at the side.)
CJ : Sit. Meditate.
(The students do so. Ryoma looks troubled, unable to clear his mind. Chiba Sadakichi watches him.)
CJ : Cease.
CS : Sakamoto.
R : Yes sir.
CS : Bring your shinai (bamboo sword) and come forward.
(Jutaro, Sana and Ryoma look surprised.)
R : Yes sir!
(Jutaro hands shinai to Sadakichi. The students move backwards automatically to make room for the sparring.)
CS : Where has your heart gone?
R : My heart? (embarassed laugh) My heart is right here.
CS : Well then, attack me.
(Ryoma attacks several times. But he is slow, indecisive and not in control. Sadakichi brings him down with a hand chop on the leg.)
CS : Do you think someone with distractions in his mind, is able to study the essence of kendo?! Re-assess your priorities, then start again from the beginning.
R : You’re right. My heart…..is not here. The Black Ships ….they’re so big it’s unbelievable!
S : Sakamoto-san!
R : Compared to the cannons on the Black Ships, the katana is no more than a sewing needle!
S : Stop it!
R : If we do have a war, swords and knives…. have no use at all!
Misc : Hey!
R : For me! For me…..what purpose….What purpose does kenjutsu training serve? I don’t know anymore!
CJ : Sakamoto! (grabs Ryoma by the collar. Sana tries to stop him.) Are you saying kenjutsu is behind the times now?!
S : Brother!
CJ : And you call yourself a samurai? (pushes Ryoma down)
S : Brother!
CS : If you feel there is no longer any purpose in studying the essence of kendo, then why are you still here? Get out please!
S : Father!
CS : The rest of you! Start the practice!
Misc : Yes sir!
(Ryoma gets up and runs out. Sana is torn. Jutara feels betrayed. Sadakichi is pained. Later, on the way back to the boarding house, Ryoma remembers the scenes with his family before he left Tosa.)
SH : Go Ryoma! Get out of Tosa, go to Edo!
SO : Go on and be someone great, before you come back Ryoma!
R : Father…..Sis…….(voice cracking up) I’ve done something really stupid! (starts to cry, sinks to his knees) What have…….What have I done!
