(Quick review of Episode 5)
Ryoma and Katsura Kogoro face to face with the USS Mississippi.
R : Compared to the cannons on the Black Ships,
Ryoma arguing with Chiba Sadakichi in Chiba dojo.
R : The katana is no more than a sewing needle! If we do have a war, swords and knives have no use at all!
Misc : Hey!
R : For me! What purpose does kenjutsu training serve? I don’t know anymore!
CS : If you feel there is no longer any purpose in studying the essence of kendo, then why are you still here? Get out please!
Ryoma breaks down on his way home.
R : I’ve done something really stupid! What have I…….What have I done!
Episode 6 : Shōin hadokoda? (松陰はどこだ Where is Shōin?)
<Tsukiji, Tosa Clan Lodgings>
(Sana arrives, hesitates to go in. Mizobuchi Hironojo comes out, walks past Sana and backs up to check her out.)
MH : Are you looking for someone, Miss?
S : Well…..I’m Sana from Chiba dojo.
MH : Oh! “The demon beauty of Chiba”?! (”Chiba no Onikomachi”?)
S : I am not a demon!
MH : Ah, no…no….I just never expected you to be such a lovely lady.
S : (fuming) Is Sakamoto Ryoma-san here please?
MH : Ryoma? He’s left for training………at Chiba dojo…..
S : (eyes wide) …….Huh?
(Sunset. Ryoma plays with children in the street.)
R : Oh! I won!
Child : You’re so good, oji-chan (young uncle)!
R : Yes! One more time, OK?
Child : I have to go home now.
Child : Me too.
R : Is it so late already?
Child : Let’s go home. Bye! Bye!
R : Oh, see you all tomorrow!
Child : See you!
(Ryoma’s smiles disappears. He jogs back to the boarding house.)
R : (to gate-keeper) It’s Sakamoto Ryoma! (Enters, jogging to his room. Stops to catch his breath) …….Yes.
(Door opens suddenly, scaring him)
MH : You’re back, Ryoma.
R : Yep!
MH : (smile) Oh, you’re sweaty all over!
R : (laugh) I worked really hard today, as usual! (laugh)
MH : Ah~~~You have a visitor. Missy has come to see you.
R : Heh? (looks inside, sees Sana) Ah! O’Sana-sama!
MH : I just found out I’ve been duped by someone every day. (They look at each other….)
(Mizobuchi has left, Ryoma serves tea.)
R: Why are you here?
S: Please go back to the dojo, Sakamoto-san. If this goes on, you’ll be kicked out of the school.
R: But I’ve told a kenjutsu teacher, “The sword is useless”, and the rest…. He will never forgive me.
S: That’s why you need to apologize and admit you were wrong.
R: But where have I got it wrong?! I don’t understand at all.
S: A Samurai trains in kendo, that’s our natural calling!
R: (dry laugh, nods) Ah.
R: I can’t get the Black Ships out of my head! (picks up his picture of the Black Ship, looks at it) How on earth can you build such a thing? Just once…..I wish I could go on and have a look. That’s all I’ve been able to think of.
S: But why….To give up kendo just because you see a Black Ship? Sakamoto-san is probably the only person in Edo who would do that!
R: Hey, I still haven’t given it up……..Oh for crying out loud……(sits down. He does not know what to do.)
(At Chiba dojo, Sana tries to get Jutaro to help.)
S : Brother, please! Please help me ask Father to let Sakamoto-san back.
CJ : I can’t! It was Sakamoto’s own decision to give up his sword.
S : To suddenly doubt yourself, after you’ve believed so stongly in something. It could happen to anyone! Don’t tell me that even you’re just going to stand aside and do nothing!
CJ : Sana….
S : (whispers) You know I like Sakamoto-san….(Jutaro looks away.) You said yourself “I will help you bring your love to fruition!”
CJ : Even so, you can’t force it, Sana
S : Brother is a stupid idiot! (storms away)
(Later, Jutaro inspects the swords with Chiba Sadakichi)
CS: So, what was Sana going on about?
CJ: (surprised) Eh?!
CS: (chuckles) Did she want Sakamoto to come back?
CJ: Oh, I don’t know what’s wrong with her…
CS: Jutaro, I don’t dislike Sakamoto, to be honest.
CS: If we draw our swords against the Black Ships, I’m sure there’s no way we can win.
CJ: What are you saying, sir!
CS: And precisely because of this, it is even more important for Samurai to treat the sword as a part of themselves. Constantly refining ourselves. Particularly, for men like Sakamoto. In other words, it all depends on whether he’s able to recognize this himself.
(At the boarding house. Ryoma looks at his picture of the Black Ship again.)
R : It’s just as Katsura-san had said before (drinks water, sits down to think about Katsura Kogoro’s words)
KK : (at the brothel) Before long, they’ll have their eyes on Japan.
(at the seaside) Whatever I told you, was taken straight from Shōin-sensei’s mouth*.
R : Hmm…?
KK : (at the seaside) He’d seen this coming long ago.
R : Shōin-sensei?
(Ryoma visits Katsura Kogoro, who is making a model of a steamship.)
KK : What is it this time?
R : You look awful again.
KK : Dreaming about the Black Ships every night, I can’t sleep at all.
R : I see. Um, Katsura-san, what is Shōin-sensei really like?
KK : Huh?
R : Katsura-san was his student, right?
KK : Yoshida Shōin-sensei is an amazing person. At the age of 5, he was adopted by the Yamaga Ryū* military tactics teacher. At 9, he taught in college.
R : Teacher?
KK : Yes. At 11, he stood in front of our daimyo Yoshichika-sama and gave a lecture on the “Bukyō Zensho” (The Complete Samurai’s Creed)
R : At 11?
KK : In short, he is a genius!
R : Please take me to see him!!
KK : What?
R : Shōin-sensei is sure to give me an answer! Katsura-san, please take me to see sensei now!
KK : I have things to ask sensei too!
R : Then let’s go together!
KK : I can’t!
R : Why not?!
KK : Sensei has gone on a field trip.
R : Field trip?
KK : I wonder if he’s in Ōshū, or Kyoto now. Or maybe in Kyūshū?
R : When will he be back?
KK : I don’t know.
R : Katsura-san!!
KK : I have no idea!
(In the wilderness. Yoshida Shōin and Kaneko Shigenosuke make haste to reach their destination.)
KS: Sensei, can we stop for a rest?
YS: We don’t have that luxury!
KS: Yes, sir
<Kaei 7 (1854) January 16>
(Sound of a ship’s horn. We see 9 black ships in the distance.)
Y : In the year 1854, half a year after Perry had left, he returned, this time with a fleet of 9 ships.
<Edo -jo, Edo castle>
AM : (speaking to himself) Too soon! This is much too soon! Didn’t he say it’d be a year?!!
(Ido Hiromichi, Maritime Defence Chief Inspector* reports on the situation to Abe “Isenokami” Masahiro)
IH : Isenokami-sama, Perry’s fleet has already sailed past Uraga! (Abe Masahiro is shocked.)
Elder: Are they coming straight for Edo?
AM : Just say to them “Let us talk”; “Let us discuss this”. Tell Perry that!
IH : Yes sir!
<Yokohama Reception hall>
Y : (narration) Perry landed at a place called Yokohama village. Although a big city now, it was no more than a fishing village at that time. A temporary reception hall was quickly constructed, and the negotiations determining Japan’s future began.
(Commodore Perry, Flag Lieutenant John Contee and Dutch Interpreter Anton Portman meet with Japanese officials led by Head of the Bakufu reception Hayashi Daigaku-no-kami* with Interpreter Hori Tatsunosuke)
JC : (in English) As we have said before, we are here to request the opening up of Japan.
AP: (in Dutch) “Zoals wij voorheen al hadden aangegeven, verzoeken wij de opening van Japan”
HT: “As we have said before, we request for the opening up of Japan”
HD: And if we should refuse?
HT: (in Dutch) “En mochten wij dit weigeren?”
AP: (in English) “And should we refuse to do so…”
CP: (in English) You will have a war!
AP: (in Dutch) “Dan betekent dit oorlog”
HD: Please wait!
(At the Council of Elders - Chief senior councillor, Abe ” Isenokami” Masahiro; “Expel foreigners” Kuze Hirochika; “Open the country” Matsudaira Tadakata and Matsudaira Noriyasu, and “No war” Makino Tadamasa)
MT: If they really wanted to trade with Japan, America wouldn’t try to start a war
MN: He thinks we’re ignorant. And wants to threaten us like that.
KH : Then all we need to do is fight him off
AM: We cannot! We have no other choice, but to open up our country
AM: If the Bakufu can benefit from trade with America, the Tokugawa reign can also go on forever. It is for our own good that we open up our country!
(The coast is heavily guarded. Temple bells are tied down and point out to sea, pretending to look like cannons.)
Y : (narration) The domains were still unaware of the Bakufu’s decision to avoid war. And continued to keep vigil along the coast of Edo.
(Ryoma and Mizobuchi Hironojo stand guard behind the temple-bell-cannons.)
MH : (yawn) No-one’s coming……
(Ryoma frustrated. Moves out of formation.)
R : If Perry comes now, how are we ever going to fight?
MH : Ryoma!
R : As a “samurai”….is this what we mean?!! (hits the temple bell to show his point)
MH : Shhh!! Stop that treacherous talk there! (Ryoma moves back in line, fuming.)
<Kochi -jo, Kochi castle>
Y : (narration) Negations between the Bakufu and Perry began. This news reached Tosa at once. At the same time, the Tosa Daimyo Yamauchi Toyoshige was reading a letter from Takechi Hanpeita.
(Tosa clan under-secretary Yoshida Tōyō has presented several ‘noteworthy’ letters to the daimyo’s attention)
YT : “In such a time, we cannot leave the future of our country in the hands of the Bakufu. The one who is able to protect our country, is none other than our beneficial Tosa ruler Yamauchi Toyoshige.” (chuckle) He’s praised me to the skies!
Tōyō : The contents of the letter aside, this man called Takechi is extremely faithful to my Lord.
YT : But Tōyō, this man is not a Joshi! (throws Takechi’s letter aside)
Tōyō : I understand.
(At the Takechi residence. Takechi Hanpeita writes another letter, while his wife Tomi brings in Sakamoto Otome.)
TT: Omaesan (My dear) Otome-san has brought us some cloth.
TH: Thank you very much, Otome-dono
SO: You’re welcome.
TH: Is Ryoma working hard in Edo?
SO: He said in his letter, if we go to war with other countries, he’ll cut off those foreign heads and bring them back.
TH: Oh….The spirit of Joui has awakened in Ryoma too.
TH: It means the determination to expel all foreigners from Japan. With regards to this, I’m writing my views for submission to My Lord.
SO: For my Lord?
TT: His previous submissions were commended by my Lord.
TH: Tomi! A samurai’s wife must not look so smug when talking about these things.
TT: I’m very sorry.
TH: Excuse me. (goes back to his letter)
TT: Otome-san, can I open this to have a look now?
(At Yataro’s school)
HK : “Respect the few, and many will be happy, such is the all-embracing Rule of Conduct”
所敬者寡、而悅者衆、此之為要道也 (chapter 12, The Classic of Filial Piety 孝經*)
(Yataro is very dejected, does not notice that Kao has finished reading.)
HK : Iwasaki-sensei. I’ve finished reading.
Y : Oh I see.
Misc : He’s spaced out again. What a loser!
Y : Be quiet!
HK : Sensei, I cannot accept it either. How can they say they can’t handle Sensei’s submission!
Y : They… can’t… handle…..
HK : The lords in the castle have no idea how brilliant sensei is.
Y : Kao-dono, you don’t know what I wrote either
HK : Well then, let me have a look!
Y : Eh?
HK : What Sensei is thinking about? I want to know, too.
Y : You want to know….?
(Yataro gazes happily at Kao who looks innocently back. The students look at Yataro, then Kao, and back.)
(On the streets. Takechi Hanpeita runs into Yataro.)
TH : Oh Yataro! Where are you off to?
Y : Uraga-machi. A rice dealer called Tagaya has asked to see me.
TH : What does a rice store want with you?
Y : (sneer) They heard about my brilliance, and decided to treat me to all the white rice I like.
TH : (laugh) Yoshida Tōyō-sama has summoned me.
Y : Yoshida-sama?
TH : To be able to meet with high ranking officials in the domain, is such an honour. What can the Tosa clan do from now on? I will tell them exactly what I think (struts off)
Y : Why would a high ranking clan official want to summon a kashi? You still don’t know what he wants with you!
TH : (to himself) Just typical!
<Rice Dealer Tagaya>
TK : I am Tagaya Kyoemon.
Y : I’m Iwasaki Yataro. What is it you want with me?
TK : (smiles) In fact (opens a box to reveal a scroll) I read this.
(Yataro looks at the letter)
Y : This is my submission….
TK : What Iwasaki-sama wrote, we merchants felt was without doubt, a superb opinion!
Y : How did you get hold of my letter?
TK : Oh, Hirai Shujiro’s sister requested that I should have a look at it, no matter what.
Y : Kao-dono?
TK : Iwasaki-sama, if ever you would like to further your studies in Edo, we at Tagaya are happy to sponsor you. You are sure to be a success, a great man some day
Y : (stunned) Eh?
(Takechi bows low in greeting to Yoshida Tōyō.)
YT: Raise your head.
TH: Yes sir.
YT: I am Yoshida Tōyō. The opinions you submitted to my Lord, I have read them too. The thoughtfulness you show for Tosa, is indeed superb.
TH: Thank you very much sir.
YT: Do you honestly believe Japan can expel all foreign people?
TH: What do you mean?
YT: Our ships are unable to reach the West. But western ships can come to our shores without difficulty. From this point alone, our disparity is plain to see.
TH: Yoshida Tōyō-sama, are you saying it’s fine for foreign people to step on Japan as they wish?
(Yoshida Tōyō looks at Takechi closely)
TH: Foreigners must be expelled! We can do this!
YT: Is that all you are capable of thinking about? Japan can no longer maintain its way of life as before. If you can’t even understand this …..
TH: (not understanding at all) You mean to say….. because I’m a kashi, I should keep my mouth shut?
YT: (exasperated) That’s enough, go now.
TH: I’m used to this kind of treatment anyway.
(At Takechi dojo. Takechi is by himself. Hatred in his face.)
TH: Yoshida …… Tōyō!
(unsheathes his katana and strikes around him several times. Then he screams, his face like a demon.)
(At the Chosu clan residence. Katsura Kogoro reads a letter.)
KK : What! (looks shocked) Sensei!! (rushes out. Sees Ryoma just coming in.)
R : Oh, Katsura-san. How are you?
KK : Sakamoto-kun, let me off today.
(rushes past Ryoma, who catches hold of him.)
R : Shōin-sensei is back, isn’t he!
KK : No! I’ve got other things to do
R : Liar! (hangs on to Katsura’s wrist. They end up having a tug of war on his hand.)
KK : Sakamoto-kun!!
R : You promised to take me to see him, Katsura-san!
KK : Then you come with me!
R : Yes sir!
KK : We’ll look for Shōin-sensei together.
R : Look for…..?
KK : Sensei wrote to me (shows Ryoma the letter) He wants to board the Black Ship and sail to America.
R : Eh?
KK : It’ll be a disaster if the Bakufu hears about it. We can’t let the clan know either. We must find sensei immediately, and stop him! (rushes off)
R : Board the Black Ship?
(The two run through the woods until they can see the Black Ships.)
R : It’s the Black Ships.
KK : To get close, he must take a boat from the shore. (to Ryoma) Sensei will wait until it’s dark. Let’s split up to look! (they run off)
Man: We must not fear! We’re going to America! (sound of man in pain) We must not fear!
(On a beach, two men stand by a boat. One slaps the other.)
Man2: Sensei too! (The other slaps back.) We’re going to America!
(Ryoma and Katsura run out of the bushes.)
KK : Sensei!
R : Sensei! (They run towards the men)
KK : Sensei!! (They are still slapping each other.)
KK : Sensei!! (One of them points to Ryoma and Katsura)
Man2: Sensei! (The two men try to hide behind the boat)
KK : Sensei! It’s me! Katsura Kogoro! (kneels in front of the boat.)
YS : Katsura-kun!
KK : Sensei, please stop this! It’s preposterous to try and board the Black Ship!
R : (kneels) That’s right! It’s no different from throwing your life away!
YS : Who are you?
R : Tosa retainer. My name is Sakamoto Ryoma. We’ve come here to stop sensei!
YS : Why?
KK : I beg you, sensei!
R : Please don’t try to stow away!
YS : What is this! It took us a long time to pump ourselves up for it. Right, Kaneko-kun?
KS : Yep.
YS : (motions to Kaneko Shigenosuke) He is the son of a merchant. But he loves to study. He wants to go too, pleading with me to bring him along
KS : That’s right!
YS : Isn’t it the same with you Katsura-kun? What is it like in other countries? You’re very interested too, aren’t you?
KK : I am
YS : What about you, Sakamoto-kun?
R : Huh?
YS : Don’t you want to know what’s on the other side of this ocean? I do. I really want to see with my own eyes what a foreign country looks like! The Black Ships came over from there. If I get on, I’ll be able to go to America! The country that is so much more civilized and advanced than Japan. This opportunity now stands right before my eyes. I can’t let it slip away!
KK : If you’re caught, it will be the death penalty for sensei! Even if you made it to America, you won’t be able to return to Japan ever!
YS : So what about it? We could fail in our quest. Perhaps we’ll get caught before we get to the ship. Or the Americans might refuse to let us on board. But that doesn’t matter! Compared to not doing anything at all, our attempt will be a million times more worthy! I am not afraid to die. On the contrary, I have a much stronger passion to live!
So, Katsura-kun, if you are really interested in foreign countries, you’d be doing the same thing as me.
Nevertheless, you didn’t. Why was that? Because you could die? You won’t be able to see Japan again? Or because departures are just too sad?!!
All of these, are just excuses! (stands up) Look! I have no excuses at all! Whatever fate awaits me, I have no regrets! There is something I must do now. To board the Black Ship and go to America!
Katsura-kun, Sakamoto-kun, thank you for worrying about me. But the joy I’m feeling now is so strong, I have shivers all over.
To America now!
R : Please wait! Please wait, Shōin-sensei! Can you……..can you please take me with you?
YS : What?
R : Having heard what sensei just said, I finally realize how insignificant my own worries are! I’m ashamed to think back on it myself! Whether the sword is useful (in battle)….That’s not important anymore! I want to……I want to try to live the same way as sensei!
YS : Sakamoto-kun!
R : Yes sir!
YS : You stupid idiot! (punches Ryoma in the face) Boarding the Black Ship for America is something that I have to do, not you! “Who are you?” “Why are you here in this world?!” “What are the things you need to do?!” Don’t think. Look into your own heart!
R : My heart?
YS : That’s right. The answer is already there. (Runs to his boat) Quickly, the Black Ships are right there! Black Ship! Black Ship!
(Yoshida Shōin and Kaneko Shigenosuke push the boat into the sea.)
KS : Sensei, please get in! (They jump in, one after another.)
YS : America! America! Black Ship! Black Ship! America!…..
(Ryoma looks on as the small boat approaches a Black Ship.)
<Ansei Gannen* (1854) March>
Y : (narration) The year Ansei Gannen* 1854, Japan and America finally concluded a treaty.
<Convention of Kanagawa*>
HD: Besides Nagasaki, there will be Hakodate and Shimoda
HT: (in Dutch) “Naast Nagasaki, Hakodate en Shimoda”
AP: (in English) “Besides Nagasaki, Hakodate and Shimoda”
CP: (in English) Let’s settle, then.
(Abe Masahiro looks at the room in Edo-jo when they worked on the treaty. Books and paper lie all over the floor.)
Y : (narration) From that instant, the Sakoku policy of the Tokugawa Bakufu ended and the course of Japan undertook a drastic change.
(In the woods. Two prisoners in bamboo cages are being transported under guard.)
Y : (narration) In the end, Yoshida Shōin’s plan failed completely. On reaching land, Shōin went straight to the Magistrate’s office to turn himself in. And he was sent back to Chōshū.
YS: I have no excuses……I have no excuses……
Misc: Yoshida Shōin?
(At a ryoutei / restaurant)
Misc: Yeah! I heard he wanted to board the Black Ship. But he was refused!
Misc: I heard he went to the Magistrate’s office to turn himself in!
Misc: What is that fellow thinking about!
Misc: Who knows?! (They laugh.)
(Ryoma sits nearby,listening sadly.)
Misc: Who would want to give themselves up! (laugh)
Misc: So many weirdos in this world!
(At Chiba dojo. Sana is having trouble at practice.)
CS: Sana! Go take a rest!
(Sana takes her men/helmet off.)
CJ : Cease. Next group!
(Sana looks up and opens her eyes wide.)
S : Sakamoto-san!
(Ryoma enters the practice hall.)
CJ : Sakamoto!
(The students stop and crowd around him. Silence. Ryoma walks to the middle of the hall. Faces Chiba Sadakichi)
CS : What do you want?
(Ryoma sits in seiza/formally)
R : Sensei, I was wrong. I treated the sword…… I treated the sword like a tool. What am I…Where is the path I should take?…. It was only after I had been forced into a corner, that I was finally able to understand, all of this. This was the reason I studied kenjutsu in the first place. (Jutaro in tears)
Sensei, please! Forgive me. Once more…..please permit me to train in the dojo….. once more! Please allow my request! (bow)
(Sana kneels down too)
CS : I have only one thing to ask you, Sakamoto
R : Yes, sir.
CS : Can the sword fight against the Black Ship?
R : The key against the black ship, lies not in the sword. It is in me, Sakamoto Ryoma and how I handle it.
(Chiba Sadakichi laughs)
CS : Sakamoto, it took you a while to figure that out. (Ryoma smiles despite himself.) Good, get ready for practice now.
R : Thank you very much!
(Chiba Sadakichi nods in approval)
S : Father!
(Tears are flowing down Jutaro’s face. Ryoma goes to get ready.)
CS : Continue with your practice!
Misc: Yes, sir!
(Sana goes to Ryoma. Chiba Sadakichi looks on.)
S : That’s wonderful! It really is! Sakamoto-san!
R : Yes it is!
CJ : Sakamoto! Stop wasting time! Get on with it! (He has wiped his tears off.)
R : Yes, sir!
(The students practice their kata with bokken / wooden swords. Sana is obviously happier. Chiba Sadakichi looks at his daughter, then at Ryoma. Ryoma’s face is at peace, focused.)
Y : (narration) In May this year, Ryoma completed his training in Edo.
R : For your guidance and care throughout this year, I am grateful from the bottom of my heart. The training that I have received from Chiba dojo in the past 13 months, will not be in vain. (Chiba Sadakichi nods.)
CJ : Come to Edo again if you can, Sakamoto.
R : Thank you very much, Jutaro-sensei. (Jutaro nods, embarrassed.)
R : Sadakichi-sensei, until we meet again. Please take care. (Sadakichi smiles.)
(Sana is washing the dojo floor.)
R: So there you are! Let me help !
S: No need. I’ve just finished.
R: Oh, what a shame (faces Sana) Thank you for looking after me. The days I spent here, were the most precious time I had. Honestly, thank you very much (bows)
S: Well, will you be setting out now?
S: You mustn’t slack off just because you’re back in Tosa
R: When I get back, I plan to apply with our clan office at once. I want to continue my training in Edo for much longer. (Sana eyes wide) And until that time, O’Sana-sama must take good care of yourself. (Gets up to leave)
S: Sakamoto-san! You must definitely come back! You must!
R: Yes! I will be back!
S: Promise me.
S: Pinky swear (sticks her pinky finger out)
R: (smiles) Sure (locks fingers with Sana) “Yubikiri genman” whoever tells a lie, a thousand needles he will dine!*
S: If you lie, I’ll really push needles down your throat.
R: (pretends to be shocked) Truly “Chiba no Onikomachi”…
S: I’m not a demon!
R: (leans in, speaks gently) I know that. I’m off! (bows and leaves)
(At Takechi dojo)
TH : Before we start our lesson, there is something I want to say to all of you (starts to write)
Misc : What is it, Takechi-san?
(Takechi holds up 2 words: 攘夷 or Joui / Expel the foreigners)
TH : The Bakufu listen to everything the Americans say. In the end, they lifted our Sakoku (closed door). If we don’t stand up now, our country will end!
(At Yataro’s home. They are celebrating.)
Y : Yanosuke, come and eat!
IY : This is wonderful, Yataro. Here, sake (pours sake all over Yataro, then slumps over drunk)
Y : What are you doing?! (But he is laughing) I’m all wet! I’m fine! I’m fine! (turns around. Picks up his scroll. Voice trembling with emotion.) I can go to Edo! (his mother Miwa looks at her son, smiling happily) I can go to Edo!
(Later, outside his school. Yataro talks to Kao.)
HK : Iwasaki-sensei, please take care of yourself in Edo.
Y : Kao-dono, Will you come to Edo with me?
HK : Heh?
Y : Please be my wife! (kneels and bows at her. Kao at a loss.)
(Edo. Ryoma looks back at the city one last time and heads home.)
R : Father, Mother, Brother and all my sisters, wait for me! I’ll be back in Tosa soon!
