<Tosa, Sakamoto residence>
(Ryoma’s step-mother Sakamoto Iyo, sister-in-law Chino and sister Otome are preparing a feast.)
SI: It looks so good!
SO: It does!
Y: (narration) In the year Ansei Gannen* 1854 June. Having completed his kenjutsu training in Edo, Ryoma returned to Tosa after an absence of 15 months
Harui: He’s back! He’s back! He’s back!
Misc: Ryoma! Ryoma!
SO: (Runs out to greet him) Ryoma! Ryoma’s home!
(Ryoma’s father Hachihei heaves a sigh of relief.)
R: (Bows low) Father, Mother, Brother and my sisters, I’ve come home
SH: Lift up your head.
R: Yes sir (looks up to see his father smiling at him)
SI: Did you get to see the world, Ryoma?
R: There are so many different types of people, their way of life, their way of thinking, are all unique. I’m very thankful to have made this trip to Edo
R: And also, Chiba Sadakichi-sensei has given you this (passes a letter to his father)
SG: From Chiba-sensei?
(The family crowds around as Hachihei reads.)
SH: ”Sakamoto Ryoma-kun has a talent in kenjutsu. He should come back to Edo one day to continue his training.”
R: Father, I want to further my study in kendo. I beg you, please permit me to return to Edo once more, to pursue kenjutsu (bows low. Otome seems hesitant. She looks at her father.)
SH: Gonpei, go ask for approval from the clan office at once.
SG: Yes sir!
R: Thank you!
Episode 7 : Haruka naru New York (かなるヌーヨーカ A Distant New York)
(Ryoma walks the streets of Tosa. Children bump into him.)
R: (smiles) So energetic!
SH: (voiceover) Here, our cry-baby Ryoma has now………(voice breaks)
(At the Sakamoto mansion, Haichipei places Chiba Sadakichi’s letter on Kou’s altar. The rest of the family sit behind, watching him closely.)
SI: Omaesan (my dear), are you going to let Ryoma go to Edo again?
SC: Isn’t it better to have him stay in Tosa now? Right, Otome-chan?
SO: Why don’t we hold off the application with the clan office for a while longer?
SH: (agitated) But Ryoma is so motivated now! Since he’s asked to go …(clutches his heart)
SO: Father! Father!
SH: (puffing) I’m alright! I’m alright. Don’t worry. Remember you mustn’t tell Ryoma (looks around at everyone) He mustn’t know, under any circumstances! (Hachihei is breathless. Otome sighs, very worried.)
(Ryoma visits Takechi dojo.)
Misc: Gyaku kesa* Commence! (Students practice their kata / forms) with real swords. Ryoma is shocked.)
(Takechi sits in a white keikogi / training top. A large “Joui” sign hangs at the front of the hall. The atmosphere is very serious, more like military training.
Misc: Ushiro kesa* Commence!
(Ryoma watches on. Later, after the training, his friends are amazed to hear of his experiences.)
Misc: The black ship? You saw it?
R: Yes, with my own eyes.
(Takechi meditates inside the hall, eyes closed. Hirai Shujiro follows suit but keeps looking at Takechi to check his reponse.)
R: The black ship….Spews out smoke as it moves! Smoke! They use a western technology called a “steam engine” Just like this (imitates sound of the engine)
TH: (shout) That’s irrelevant! Why did the Bakufu open up the country? Why didn’t they enforce Sakoku?
Misc: (shout) That’s right! We want Joui! Joui! Joui!…..
HS: Takechi-sensei ……he’s now the leader of the Tosa Joui movement (Takechi glares at Ryoma.)
R: H-hold on a moment, Takechi-san…..
Misc: Ryoma! You call him Takechi-sensei!!
TH: Takechi dojo is no longer just a place to learn kenjutsu and knowledge. To protect Japan from falling into foreign hands, we’ve all sworn to uphold Joui. That’s why everyone has gathered here with me.
Misc: That’s right!
(Ryoma looks around. They all glare back at him.)
R: (voiceover) Takechi-san is the leader of the Joui movement?
(Later, Ryoma and Okada Izo talk at a road-side tea stall.)
R: So Tosa is caught up in this as well.
OI: (his mouth full of food) What are you talking about? Everybody in Japan supports Joui now!
R: Izo, do you think we can defeat the Black Ships?
OI: Of course we can!! How can the Samurai lose to a bunch of foreigners?
R: But they’re as big as monsters!
R: How in the world can we defeat those monsters?
OI: How would I know? Takechi-sensei is the one who thinks about difficult stuff like this! (gets up) I have to help with the farming at home today. Tell me more about your stories of Edo next time.
R: Sure (gets up to leave. Sees Kao.) Kao…..
(Ryoma and Kao in the woods)
R: Are you doing well?
R: Why is your hair the same?
R: Shouldn’t women wear their hair in maru-mage* after they get married?
HK: I declined the marriage.
HK: Because I wanted to learn more knowledge
R: (eyes wide) Knowledge? Who’s teaching you?
HK: Iwasaki Yataro-san.
R: Heh? Yataro’s become a teacher?
HK: But, I’ve stopped already.
R: No more?
HK: A lot has happened.
R: A lot……
HK: Weren’t you in a hurry to go somewhere, Ryoma-san?
R: ………..Oh! Yes I was.
HK: Then I won’t keep you any longer.
R: (nods and leaves. Mutters to himself) I’ve only just been back and so much has happened.
(Kao watches Ryoma, a small smile on her face)
<Iwasaki Yataro Private School>
(The students stand, reciting the Nihon Gaishi fluently, a big contrast from when they first started.)
Students: “The unofficial historian says: When I read the ancient books, I saw in the time of Emperor Toba, the passing of laws restraining all domains and warriors….”
(吾讀舊志 見鳥羽帝時, 數下制符 禁諸州武士….. Book 1 - Nihon Gaishi / The Unofficial History of Japan)
(Yataro sits outside, moping)
Students: “Of the Genji and Heishi (i.e. Minamoto and Taira clans)……….(屬源平二氏… )
(He thinks back on his proposal to Kao.)
Y: Please be my wife! It was Kao-donno who gave my submission to the rice shop owner. I can go to Edo because of you. I never expected you to think so much for me. I want to repay your feelings, as a man !
Y: Don’t call me sensei Call me omaesan (my dear husband) (Yataro gives a crooked smile)
HK: (horrified, drops to the ground in a bow) I’m terribly sorry! I…..I…..
Y: Be…. Because of Ryoma….?
HK: (gets up immediately) Good-bye! (runs away)
Y: (tries to reach for her, but falls to the ground, hand outstretched , face to face with a rooster.)
Y: (wakes up from his reverie, fuming) Ryoma……(hears a sound, turns around)
R: (cheerful) Yataro!
(Ryoma waits as the students leave.)
Student: (bows to Yataro) Thank you sir!
R: Oh, everyone’s working so hard! You do have a knack for teaching, Yataro!
Y: Why did you come here?
R: I came to report to you about Edo.
Y: What’s Yoshiwara* like? (red light district) Plenty of pretty girls around I bet.
R: I went to Edo for kenjutsu training!
Y: Right, and you’re engaged in Tosa as well.
R: Engaged….Hey Yataro! What are you on about?
(Ryoma follows Yataro through the fields.)
Y: After all, you’re going to spend the rest of your boring days in Tosa anyway.
Y: I’m not like you. I’m going to be the prime of the Kashi. No, this dream is too small for me. I want to be the man who pushes Japan forward. You can have all the Tosa women you like! (kicks a basket out of the way)
R: Oh really? Yataro!! (laugh)
Y: Stop following me! I’m going to see Kawada Shōryū -sensei now.
Y: A scholar-artist. He edited the “Hyōson kiryaku”* series of books (Record of the Drifters) And is said to have gone to Satsuma , to see the reverberatory furnaces.
Y: They say he’s the most learned person in Tosa. I’ll have to see with my own eyes, if that’s true or not.
R: Take me with you!
R: I want to talk to him too.
Y: I’m not going to let you see him!
R: Come on, Yataro!
Y: I’m….I’m going alone! (starts to run. Ryoma chases him.) What are you doing?!!
R: Take me with you! Yataro!
Y: Stop following me!
(Yataro and Ryoma run into someone’s yard.)
Y: Why did you come?!
R: (laugh) Oh we’re here.
(The house is filled with people. The yard outside is full of cats.)
Y: Why is it so crowded! Make way! Make way! Make way! (Yataro pushes his way in. Ryoma follows.)
R: Oh excuse me! (laugh) Excuse me! Excuse me! (They both sit.) So many people have come!
Y: Who are these people!
(Kondo Chojiro arrives.)
KC: Excuse me. Sensei is coming, sensei is coming. Please sit up!
R: Oi! Chojiro!
R: Well, isn’t that Chojiro now! (laugh)
Y: (to Ryoma) Oi, who’s he?
R: He’s the son of the manju shop in Suidōchō (street name)
KC: My name is Chojiro.
R: What are you doing here?
KC: I’m a disciple of Shōryū -sensei.
KC: Yes sir!
KC: Sensei is here.
(The people make way for Kawada Shōryū to pass. Takechi Hanpeita has arrived and stands outside the room.)
R: (beckons to Takechi) Takechi-san! Takechi-san! Over here! Over here!
(Takechi ignores Ryoma. A stern expression on his face.)
KS: (looks around at the people) ……New York!!!!
(Chojiro opens a scroll with the words “New York” and its pronounciation in katakana written on it.)
KS: New York is the name of a city in America. America is a country with incomparable wealth and prosperity. They have trade with countries all around the world. That means….. goods are bought and sold between them. And as the leader of the country, the President is selected by the people from someone with great knowledge and esteem. Even a merchant or a farmer can be the President.
Misc: A farmer as the Shogun?
TH: Sensei ! Are you implying that America is far superior to Japan?
Misc: Yeah, yeah!
KS: Implying? That’s a fact!
Misc: (start to leave) Rubbish! I’m not sitting through this!
KC: Please don’t forget your belongings when you leave!
Misc: Let’s go….This is a waste of time ….
(Less than half the people stay behind.)
KS: Well then (opens up a huge map) This….is the world. And this here is Japan.
KS: (laugh) And Tosa is here (points to a dot)
KS: In the context of this world, Japan is only an unremarkable island country.
Misc: Unremarkable?! Are you an “open country” supporter? The only way for Japan now is Joui! That’s right! That’s right! Joui! Joui!
KS: (sits down) Here it comes. Here it comes. “Joui!” “Joui….” I don’t really mind, whether it’s Joui or opening the country.
Misc: What?!! You have no idea what you’re talking about! I wouldn’t have come if I’d known…
(More people leave. Only Ryoma, Yataro and Hanpeita remain.)
KC: Thank you for coming. Please don’t leave anything behind! (Chojiro sees the people out.)
Misc: (to Chojiro) You should quit this place too!
KC: Please take care!
Misc: Joui is the only way!
(Ryoma stares at Kawada Shōryū, who is plucking his own nose hair.)
TH: Sensei. I heard there was a man called Manjiro from the Nakahama village. His fishing boat was shipwrecked and he was taken to America. You got your foreign stories from him.
(Kawada Shōryū keeps on plucking painfully. Then starts to play with his cat.)
TH: If that’s the case, I was sure you must have a way of defeating them. I had high hopes, but I guess I was wrong!
R: (whisper) Takechi-san!
TH: And you consider yourself a Japanese!!
(Kawada Shōryū stops playing. Smiles wryly.)
Y: Oh! What a nag!
Y: Europe invented the steam engine. Which led steam ships to sail all over the oceans, from that time on, the world has been changing. So how can you expect Japan to be the only one standing still?
KS: (to Yataro) You seem very bright.
Y: (to Kawada) But I don’t care what happens to Japan. What I want to ask you is….What do I need to do to become a wealthy man?
TH: How can a samurai talk about money all the time?!
Y: People who know nothing about poverty should keep their mouths shut!
KS: I can understand what you’re thinking about, but if you want to be a rich man, you shouldn’t ask me, ask the rich men! (points to Yataro) You don’t pass (the test) either (laugh)
Y: What do you mean “I don’t pass” ! (reaches for his katana. Ryoma holds him down immediately.)
R: Stop that, Yataro!
KS: Oh, I need the toilet…(laugh) (walks off, leaving Ryoma struggling with Yataro)
Y: Oi! Oi!
KC: Sakamoto-sama, I’ll see you another day!
R: (still holding onto Yataro) I guess you’re right, Chojiro!
KC: Goodbye then
Y: Hey! Stand there! Oi!
(Kawada Shōryū ignores them and goes into the toilet in the yard.)
Y: Who does he think he is?! (they finally stop struggling)
R: Really, Tosa has strange people too.
Y: Putting on airs!
TH: What are you admiring? He’s a typical example of scholars who have knowledge in vain, doing nothing with what they learn! (Kawada Shōryū listens in the toilet.) Yataro! Your words are not acceptable too!
TH: What do you mean you don’t care what happens to Japan?
KS: (mutters to himself) What a racket….
Y: Well listen up then! The whale can swim leisurely all the time. It’s only small fishes who panic in a bit of waves.
TH: Are you mocking me?!! Yataro!!
Y: Oh you know what I mean, Takechi-san!! (They struggle. Ryoma stands in between, pushing them apart.)
R: Stop it! Stop it, the both of you! Yataro!
R: When the Black Ships sail, they produce waves huge enough. Even the whales run off!
R: Takechi-san, when the great waves come, (hits his sword) can the sword fight them back?
(Kawada Shōryū smiles in the toilet,)
R: I learnt a lot of things in Edo. The enemy who confuses us, is the one in our own heads. What Shōryū-sensei had tried to say, was - before we take on America, England or Russia as our enemies, at least….. first prepare ourselves. And think how we can effectively protect Japan!
Y: One trip to Edo and you’ve learnt to force your way with words. Oh, this is getting more and more interesting
Y: (looks at Takechi) In fact, I can finally go to Edo too! (laughs)
R: Yataro! That’s great!
Y: (in Takechi’s face) And Takechi-sensei can keep on collecting Tosa kashi to satisfy himself here, then
R: (pushes Yataro away) Don’t say that! (Yataro turns and leaves) Hey, Yataro, hey!
Y: I won! I defeated Takechi Hanpeita! (laugh)
R: Will you stop talking like that?!
TH: (furious) Go as you wish!! (storms out)
R: Takechi-san! (Takechi pushes Ryoma out of the way) Ta….Ow! Ow! Ow! Takechi-san! Yataro! Oi! These two….. (Kawada Shōryū smiles.)
KS: Yes. (Gets off the toilet)
(At Yataro’s house, he prepares to leave. His family Miwa, Saki and Yanosuke see him off.)
Y: I’m going.
IM: Edo is very far away, Yataro. You must take good care of yourself. (Yataro nods.)
Y: I’ll go now.
Saki: Have a good trip, brother.
(His father Yajiro sits outside the hut.)
IY: Yataro….(looks at him sadly, nods)
Saki: Have a good trip.
IM: (smile) Take care! (Yataro walks off)
IY: Stinks! Something stinks! (Yanosuke starts to cry)
Saki: Yanosuke has wet himself! (Carries him inside the house)
IM: Oh this child!
IY: Really!! (both follow in)
Y: (looks back at his family) Why can’t they just see me off nicely?
(At the Sakamoto residence. The family are having lunch.)
SG: You went to Kawada Shōryū-sensei’s place?
SC: Oh, he’s a very important person, isn’t he?
SI: The Number 1 artist in Tosa.
SO: I heard he painted the partitions in the Nijo Castle* in Kyo.
R: Nijo Castle?! (Otome nods) There are so many talented people in this world. (notices that Hachihei has been very quiet) Aren’t you eating, Father?
SH: Oh, I don’t feel like eating.
R: Not feeling well?
SO: Oh! Maybe the food’s too salty today!
SG: Yes, I think so too!
SI: Oh I’m so sorry Omaesan!
SH: No, don’t worry about that!
R: (tasting the food) Is it too salty?
Misc: Yes! Too salty! Too salty! (Ryoma dubious, tries again.)
KS: Excuse me….
(Kawada Shōryū stands in the yard.)
(Later, Kawada Shōryū is drawing the turtles in the garden. Harui watches him.)
SH: Excuse me…..what can we do for you, sensei?
KS: I’m always looking out for things which are interesting, no matter how insignificant they may seem (plays with Harui) That’s why I followed (Ryoma) back. (Gonpei looks at Ryoma, mouth wide open) Ryoma……
R: Yes sir.
KS: You once said the Black Ships created big waves on the sea.
SO: Black Ships? Waves?
KS: How big were those waves? Can you tell me?
SO: Tell him quick!
SG: Ryoma, sensei came here in person (to ask you)
(Hachihei is quiet and looks uncomfortable.)
(Haichihei calls out suddenly and collapses.)
Misc: Father! Father!
R: Father! Are you alright!
KS: Not good….It’s the heart… I know a doctor in south town (runs off)
Misc: Father! Father! Father! Father!
(Night. Ryoma goes to see his father, who sleeps. His breathing is labored. Kawada Shōryū watches over Hachihei.)
KS: Your father has been sleeply soundly all this time.
R: (saddened) I …..didn’t know anything. And I was doing whatever I liked in Edo (starts to cry)
(The next morning. Iyo tends to Hachihei. He sleeps more peacefully. She smiles. Kawada Shōryū eats breakfast, served by the rest of the family. Ryoma and Gonpei kneel in front of him.)
R: Thanks to Sensei who found us the doctor, our father’s life is saved.
SG: Truly, thank you very much (bows)
R: Thank you.
KS: (drinks soup) Ah! This tastes good! I think I’ll have a bath now.
(Harui gives him a big grin, but everyone else is stunned.)
KS: Well, this is a kind of fate. So I guess I’ll stay here for a while longer.
SO: Heh? (Ryoma and Otome look at each other)
SG: Well, m-make…yourself….at home!
KS: Ah yes, Ryoma
R: Yes sir
KS: What did the waves from the Black Ships look like?
SG: Yes, we still haven’t finished our discussion on the great waves.
SC: That’s right! That’s right!
R: They were incredible, those huge waves! First…. With a “Dooong”, the Black Ship came closer and closer! (The Mississippi sails past) Then, with a “Waaahh”, enormous waves pushed me down! (Ryoma splashed by waves) I thought I was a goner!
KS: (crawls over) What did the Black Ship look like?!
SG: I want to know too!
Misc: Me too! Me too!
R: (hits fist on the floor) Wait a moment! (runs up his room and returns with a log) Here it is!
KS: This is….?
R: The Black Ship.
SO: Black Ship? What an awful model!
SG: You can say that again.
R: Eh?!! (looks around, disappointed that his family are not impressed)
KS: And those are…..? (motioning to Ryoma’s paper drawings)
(Ryoma snatches and hides them behind his back)
SG: Ryoma! Let’s see them!
(Ryoma hands over the crumpled sheets. The family scrambles to open them up. Pictures of the paddle wheel and steam pipes.)
SO: What are these?!!
R: I was analyzing the structure of the Black Ship.
KS: Why did you want to look into that?
R: Well…..I thought it would be nice if I could build one (embarrassed laugh)
SC: Build it?
SO: A Black Ship?
(Ryoma nods. Kawada Shōryū stares at him.)
SG: I get it! To defeat America in the war!
R: No! I hate fighting!
(Kawada Shōryū looks at each piece in earnest.)
SG: Didn’t you say it so loudly in your letter?
SC: Yes! Didn’t you say you’ll chop off foreign heads and bring them back?
R: Well, that……
SO: Ryoma learned a lot of things in Edo. So of course, there would be variables in the things he considers.
(Ryoma unsure if Otome’s talking about him. Kawada Shōryū starts looking at Ryoma in a new light.)
SO: Right? Chino?
SC: (to Gonpei) You shouldn’t tell him off without any reason, Omaesan!
(Later, Ryoma comes down from his room, sees his “black ship” thrown aside and picks it up. He sees that his father is up and rushes to talk to him, tripping on the way. Hachihei laughs as he watches his son.)
R: Father, how are you feeling?
R: Yes, sir
SH: I heard from Gonpei. You want to build a black ship?
R: Yes (laugh)
SH: What do you want to do with it after you finish?
R: Well, I haven’t thought that far ahead…….
SH: (laugh) I see. Ryoma, don’t concern yourself with me. You should be slashing your blade, and reading up as you like. If a samurai forgets to train and improve himself constantly, he loses his worth and sense of being. (Ryoma nods) Since we have come into this world, we should let our lives burn brightly until the end. Use it all up! Only then can we truly end our life.
R: (moved) I have yet to accomplish anything. No results yet that I can show to Father. Father, you must live much, much, much longer, or it will be terrible for me.
SH: (chuckle) It doesn’t matter if it takes 10 or 20 years, you will make it. And then you’ll come back from Edo. That is good enough! The greatest blessing any parent could ask for, is to see our children grown up (chuckle)
(Ryoma spars with a partner. He strikes on the head, flips his opponent’s shinai away and strikes on the head again.)
HB: Cease. Your skills are much improved, Ryoma. That was beautifully done.
R: Thank you sir.
(At home, Ryoma climbs back into his room. Books and paper are strewn everywhere. He looks at them. Later, he goes through the Hyōson kiryaku* with Kawada Shōryū. Gonpei and Harui are also reading.)
R: Sensei has such a detailed knowledge of America, I can understand it now, after reading this book.
KS: I compiled this series of books from the accounts of John Manjiro.
R: Sensei, what does “John” mean?
KS: Ah…..They called Manjiro by the name of “John” over there. It’s a very common name “John”
R: Right, if I go to America, I’ll become “John Ryoma” then.
KS: ”John Ryoma”? (laugh)
R: Yes! (Everybody laughs.)
KS: This is the first time I heard anyone say that! You are an amusing man!
R: (to Harui) Was it that amusing?
(In another room, Hachihei and Iyo listen to their conversation)
SI: Ryoma-san’s expressions are becoming very lively lately. (Hachihei nods and continues to watch his family laugh together.)
KS: John Ryoma! (laugh)
(Night. Kawada Shōryū prepares to paint. Hachihei sleeps in the adjoining room.)
SH: I was old already when Ryoma was born. When he came, I was already prepared. I knew I wouldn’t get to spend a lot of time with him. Even though I knew this was coming…. (sad laugh) What a big headache…I’m still so…. terribly worried about him. (Kawada Shōryū smiles.) Will Ryoma be able to succeed in life? What do you think?
KS: This family has really made me very happy. Everyone respects and looks up to you, they worry for you. This place is filled with warmth and humanity. And it is because of a family like this, that your youngest son is blessed with such a kind nature. But that is very captivating indeed. Ryoma is sure to have a successful future.
SH: (emotional) I see. I wish I could get to see his success.
(Morning. Ryoma opens his eyes. He sits in meditation. Looks around, then smiles. He knows what to do now. Opens the windows and looks out into the sunshine. Later that day, on the sunny Katsurahama Beach. Ryoma draws in the sand with an oar. His entire family looks on.)
SG: How many years has it been since our last family outing?
SC: We wouldn’t have done it this time if Ryoma hadn’t suggested it.
SH: The ocean is beautiful.
SI: That’s true.
SH: I didn’t realize the sea in Tosa could be so beautiful.
(Ryoma finishes his sand drawing)
R: Father, I’ve found the answer. What I want to do after building the black ship
SH: Oh! Tell me.
R: Yes, sir. I will sail my black ship on the ocean. And, we will all go on board.
SO: (excited) On the black ship?
R: Then, we will sail around the world! (to his niece, who holds his black ship model) Harui!
(They run onto the sand drawing, he sticks the oar in)
R: This here, is Tosa where we are now! First, we will sail west to Manchu China (moves the oar to another spot) A great country since the old times, we’re sure to see sights we’ve never seen before!
(Tears start welling in Hachihei’s eyes.)
R: From China, we go west to…. India. The country where O’Shaka-sama (the Buddha) was born.
SG: Oh! I really want to see that!
R: And onward, there’s supposed to be a country called “Egypt” (thrusts oar into the next spot on the sand) From the books that Shōryū-sensei lent to me, it’s a desert country, with mountains made from blocks of rock!
SO: Rock mountains?
R: Yes! Then the ship turns south to Africa. Limitless grasslands, elephants, giraffes… Countless animals we’ve never seen before!
Harui: I want to see them!
R: So do I!
(Hachihei closes his eyes, nodding, lips trembling.)
R: Our ships then sails to Europe.
R: It’s amazing how culturally advanced Europe is. You’ll all be swept off your feet, most likely!
Harui: I want to go!
R: You’d want to, eh?!!
(Tears flow down Hachihei’s face.)
R: But our journey is not over yet! We cross the great Atlantic Ocean. Straight towards the country John Manjiro went to (shoves the oar down hard) To America!! That city called “New York”. What place is it? And I want to meet that man they call “The President”!!
SH: This is what you’ve been thinking about?
(Ryoma sees his father crying and starts to cry too)
SH: (nodding) Looks like it’s going to be a delightful journey, yes. Let’s all go together.
SI: (crying) Omaesan!
SH: I’ve never had a day, as happy as today (tries to get up. Ryoma rushes over to support him)
(They look at each other, laughing through their tears. The family stands together, looking out to the ocean.)
Y: (narration) Not long after that day, Hachihei-san passed away peacefully.
(Kawada Shōryū is alone at the Sakamoto house. He finishes the painting he started that night with Hachihei. It is a dragon looking up into the skies.)
