SG: Please accept this gift.
(Sakamoto Gonpei and Ryoma go door to door to express their thanks for the wishes received on Hachihei’s funeral.)
Y: (narration) After Ryoma’s father Hachihei-san passed away, the eldest son Gonpei -san succeeded as Head of the Sakamoto family.
(Gonpei and Ryoma bow to leave. On the way home…..)
<Ansei 3 (1856), Tosa>
SG: Well, we finally finished the round of greeting calls.
R: Yes, Brother is now truly the indisputable Sakamoto family head. Father can rest in peace too.
(They hear shouting in the distance. A group of men are in a fight.)
Misc: You fool!
R: What’s going on?
(A man is being carried out of a large house and thrown on the ground, motionless.)
Leader: Make sure he can’t walk away from this!
(Ryoma and Gonpei rush over.)
R: Stop it! Stop! Stop it, all of you! How can so many of you gang up on one man?!
(The Village Headman Shimada Benemon comes out smiling.)
SB: This is only a very small matter. You don’t need to bother yourselves with it, my lords Samurai
SG: (holding the man up) Aren’t you Iwasaki Yajiro-dono?
R: Yataro’s ……father?
IY: (face bloodied, tries to grab hold of Shimada) You’re not getting away with this!
SB: (shoves him off) You old fool!
R: Stop it right now!!
SB: Let’s go.
Misc: Fine. (They saunter back into the house.)
R: Old dad! Oh no! (Yajiro is unconscious, blood flows from his ears.)
R/G: Old dad! Old dad!
Episode 8 : Yataro no Namida (弥太郎の涙 Yataro’s Tears)
<Edo, Tosa Clan Lodgings>
Y: (narration) At that time, I had been in Edo for a year, burying my nose in my books.
(Mizobuchi Hironojo enters the room. It is the same room he shared with Ryoma before.)
MH: Oh that was great! Yataro, you should take a bath too!
Y: I don’t need to.
MH: But you stink! You smell so bad I can’t sleep every night.
Y: Stop bugging me!
MH: Oh, by the way, you have a letter from home.
Y: (snatches it) Why didn’t you say so?!
MH: ”Why didn’t I say so?” I don’t know why I put up with him! (Yataro reads letter) I had a great time by myself after Ryoma returned to Tosa.
Y: What?! Father….
MH: What is it? (reads over Yataro’s shoulder) A fight? Seriously hurt?! They’re asking you to go back to Tosa!
(Yataro runs through the crowd, pushing people aside)
Y: Out of the way! Out of the way!
Y: (narration) In those days, the trip from Edo to Tosa normally takes 30 days for a grown man
(Yataro races through the fields, a big pack on his back)
(….still running at night, lugging his pack along)
Y: (narration) But I ran non-stop through day and night
(….dashes through the woods and crashes into the bushes. His pants are torn and he’s not holding a pack anymore)
Y: How much trouble do you want to give your son before you’re satisfied?!! (keeps running) Damn! Dammit!
(…..hobbling through the streets, mud all over his face, clothes tattered)
Y: (narration) And it took me only 16 days to reach Tosa.
(Yataro limps home. He is barefoot. Ryoma sits with Miwa, Saki and Yanosuke, by Yajiro’s side.)
IM: You’re back!
(Ryoma is shocked to see Yataro’s feet. They are broken and bloodied.)
Saki: I can’t believe you made it back so soon…
(Yataro goes to see his father.)
Y: Is he still alive?
(Yajiro wakes, his head is heavily bandaged.)
Y: (to his mother) How did this happen?
IM: The village head, Shimada-sama, channeled the water away from the fields for his own use. Your father was furious, and went to sort it out. He was beaten up instead
R: I happened to pass by….
Y: Bastards!! (Gets up)
Y: Thank you for your help, Ryoma. But that’s enough now. This is our problem (he runs out)
<Shimada Benemon Residence>
Y: Shimada! Shimada!
(The women scream as they see Yataro. Shimada’s male servants catch and restrain him.)
Servants: What do you want?!
Y: Shimada! Shimada! Let go! Shimada! Shimada!
SB: (comes out) Well, isn’t that Iwasaki-sama? When did you come back from Edo?
Y: Let go! If your father was lying there half-dead, wouldn’t you come back?
SB: Oh what a great pity about your father~~
Y: Wasn’t that your doing, Shimada?!!
(Yataro tries to draw his sword but it is stuck. He pulls for a long time, and finally unsheathes it. The men laugh.)
SB: What a rusty sword you have!
Y: Quiet! How dare you treat a samurai like that? Don’t expect this to blow over so easily!
SB: With regard to this matter, the Magistrate-sama has already given his decision. The fault lies entirely with Iwasaki Yajiro-sama.
Y: What! (Shimada turns to leave) Hey!
SB: Oh yes, yes….. And that friend of yours - I remember his name is Sakamoto something (jeer) Going on at me … “Give us an explanation” …. “Apologise to Yajiro-sama”. He’s always bothering us. Could you please have a talk with him?
Y: This is totally unacceptable! Why wasn’t the village head punished at all?
(Yataro is thrown out of the Magistrate House.)
Guard:We have nothing to say to you!
Y: Please! Let me see the Magistrate-sama!
Guard:You better watch your mouth!! Questioning the Magistrate-sama’s decision like that, how dare you? We’ve given a stern warning to that Sakamoto Ryoma already!
(At the Sakamoto residence, the family are eating.)
SG: On behalf of Iwasaki-dono, I heard you put in a complaint with the Aki Magistracy, is that true?
R: It wasn’t really a complaint….
SG: You better not get involved in this. What if it gets our family in trouble as well?
SI: Goodness, is that what the head of the Sakamoto family should say?
SO: How mean was that!
SC: Father would feel ashamed to hear that, omaesan.
Harui: I’m so sorry, Grandpa!
(Both Ryoma and Gonpei are surprised at the reaction of the women)
SG: My apologies, Ryoma.
R: Oh no, there’s no need to apologize, b-brother…
SG: I’m sorry
R: P-please eat….
(Ryoma tries to talk Takechi into helping Yataro.)
R: Indeed, the Magistrate’s decision doesn’t make sense either. He seemed to favour the village head from the very beginning. Don’t you think so, Takechi-sama?
TH: What good is there for us to get involved with Yataro? Ekichi! Move faster!
E: Yes, sir!
TH: The foreigners have their eyes on Japan now. We must stand united in order to chase the Americans out. I have no time to waste on irrelevant things like that
R: How can this be “irrelevant” ……?
TH: We’ve been granted permission to go to Edo.
TH: I have 120 disciples under me. If the master of the top dojo in Tosa says he wants to go to Edo for kenjutsu, the clan will gladly say yes (Ryoma nods slowly) Not only that, they’re paying for all expenses, and for Shujiro and Izo as well.
(Okada Izo trains rigorously on a practice dummy.)
TH: But kenjutsu training is just an excuse. When I get to Edo, I’m going to liaise with the Joui party from each clan.
R: Joui party?
TH: Even though you say the Black Ships are huge, and foreign countries are more advanced than us, Japanese people are not going to be intimidated by that! The Joui movement can’t be stopped anymore! (shouts to his students) I want energy!!
Misc: Yes, sir! (Ryoma watches them, looking concerned.)
(At the Hirai residence. Kao comes out. She hears Ryoma’s voice.)
R: I am not afraid of you!!
Children: Go! Go! Go! Go!
(Kao sees Ryoma outside her house, play-fighting with children.)
R: Yah! You’re too strong for me….(passes his stick to another child) Avenge for me!!!
R: Oh! Kao!
HK: What are you doing here?
R: Ah….where are you heading to?
HK: Nishi-machi (west street)
R: Oh I see. I have something to do over there too…… Shall we walk over together?
HK: (smile) Sure.
R: (smile)….. Let’s go.
Child: Goodbye! Goodbye!
(Kao’s brother, Hirai Shujiro watches secretly from behind)
(On the streets….)
R: Oh yes, I heard that Shujiro-san will be going to Edo with Takechi-san.
HK: My brother has a very strong respect for Takechi-san. But, can Joui really work?
HK: Hasn’t the Imperial Court decided to open up the country?
R: You know a lot of things!
HK: Yataro-san told me about it before. He said “Takechi-san doesn’t get it at all. Joui will never work if you rely on violence alone.”
R: I see. Yataro said that …..(smiles)
HK: Is that what Ryoma-san thinks too? Is that why you didn’t join up with Takechi-san?
R: Huh? Well no, I……just can’t get used to calling my childhood friend “Takechi-sensei”
HK: (smiles) That’s just like you, Ryoma-san
HK: For a free spirit to submit himself as someone else’s vassal, I can’t imagine that happening.
R: (laugh) Is that praise or criticism? I don’t know!
(Kondo Chojiro spots them in the street.)
KC: Sakamoto-sama? Oh, it is Sakamoto-sama! (runs over to Ryoma)
R: Chojiro! (to Kao) This is Chojiro from the manju shop.
HK: I know.
KC: Isn’t that Kao-sama? (looks at Ryoma, then at Kao and back at Ryoma, laughs) Sakamoto-sama really has a way!
HK: Don’t say that, Chojiro-san!
KC: But then, there’s not much time left for Sakamoto-sama to go about carefree in Tosa, is it?
R: (hesitant, to Kao) Actually…..I’m going to Edo again
(Kao is shocked. Chojiro continues to speak, but Ryoma keeps looking at Kao, hoping he can explain to her.)
KC: To be recognized as a talent by Edo’s leading Chiba Sadakichi-sensei, is remarkable indeed!
HK: (forced smile) Yes, that’s so true. I have to go now.
HK: Goodbye Chojiro-san (looks at Ryoma and leaves. Ryoma doesn’t know what to do and watches her go. )
KC: See you next time!
R: Kao…….(Ryoma looks lost, eyes still on Kao far away)
KC: One more thing, Sakamoto-san
R: (suddenly aware that Chojiro is spealking) Hmmm?
KC: I heard you were involved in that incident regarding Iwasaki-sama?
R: You really know everything, don’t you?! (turns to leave)
KC: Wait (pulls Ryoma back and into a corner) Wait Sakamoto-sama.
R: What is it?!
KC: The Aki Magistrate is bound to side with the village head
KC: Shimada-sama is always sending gifts to the Magistrate’s house
KC: Sometimes rice, then sometimes money. So the Magistrate would want to play it down from start. If he couldn’t settle an ordinary fight among the villagers, and this incident reaches the ears of the Tosa Magistrate, he’ll be investigated into. I’m afraid Iwasaki-sama’s father will have to swallow this and just pretend that it had never happened
R: That’s …..much too harsh.
(Kao returns home. Finds Shujiro waiting at the gate.)
HK: I’m back.
HS: An unmarried woman shouldn’t walk together with another man, should she?
HK: But that’s Ryoma-san!
HS: Even more so! Ryoma does not share our views. We are no longer childhood playmates.
Y: (narration) Not long after, Takechi Hanpeita, Hirai Shujiro and Okada Izo left for Edo together.
(Izo runs about excitedly, slashing trees with a thick branch.)
HS: Izo! Your sword’s going to fall off!
TH: Fix it now. You’re already a distinguished samurai.
OI: Thank you so much! Takechi-sensei!
TH: Let’s go.
Y: (narration) Although Hanpeita took the same path that Ryoma and I had taken before to Edo, the future that awaited him, was totally different from ours.
(At Takechi residence, his grandmother Chi lies heartbroken, in Tomi’s arms.)
(Night. There is a festival and the streets are crowded with people and performers. Ryoma walks alone. He sees Kao in the distance. Kao spots Ryoma and starts to run away.)
R: Kao! Kao! Wait!
(Kao runs off into the woods.)
R: Kao! Wait, Kao! Listen to me! (He catches up) I didn’t mean to hide it from you! About my return to Edo….I was going to tell you sooner or later!
HK: The reason I became a student with Yataro-san, was not because I wanted to improve my knowledge.
HK: I didn’t want Ryoma-san to leave me. And yet Ryoma-san still chose to go away!
R: It’s not like that! It’s not like that at all, Kao!
HK: I don’t know what to do anymore!
R: Kao, all this time, I’ve always liked you. But I’m still nobody, I’ve nothing to give! Wait for me Kao! When the time comes, I will definitely…… definitely come back for you.
R: I’ve never lied to you! (They smile at each other.)
HK: I understand.
(At the Aki Magistracy)
Y: The Magistrate-sama! Please let me see the Magistrate-sama! Magistr….(Yataro gets thrown out in the street)
Guard: What a troublemaker! The next time you come, we’ll throw you in jail!
(Yataro returns home. Yajiro is sitting up, wrapped in bandages.)
IY: It hurts.
Saki: You’re home, brother.
IM: You’re home, Yataro.
(Ryoma carries in a basin of water)
R: Oh, Yataro!
Y: (to his family) What’s this guy doing here?!
IM: What sort of attitude is that?!
Saki: He’s been a great help since he arrived just now.
IM: Sakamoto-sama is a very kind person.
IY: Apologize now, Yataro.
R: No problem! No problem! Come, old dad! (starts to give Yajiro a wipe)
IY: Thank you so much, Sakamoto-sama
(Yajiro groans. Yataro walks out in disgust. Starts chopping firewood. Ryoma comes out.)
R: The reason why your father has been made the scapegoat, was because the village head and the Aki Magistrate are in collaboration. However many times you go to appeal, you won’t get anywhere
Y: So you expect me to just swallow this? It’s true, my father is a terrible drunk and a troublemaker. Always getting into arguments, addicted to gambling, throwing money away. I don’t know how many times he’s made me cry. But still, for me, he’s the only father I have! My own father was beaten half-dead, and then made to take the blame. How do you expect me to keep quiet?!! (Yataro’s parents can hear him clearly from inside the house.)
If appealing again and again is not going to work, then I’ll….(tries hard to yank his rusted sword out) I’ll just kill that villlage head! (points his sword at Ryoma) And if you dare stop me, I’ll kill you too!
R: I just lost my father not so long ago. And this matter had made me …. so furious too. I’m so angry, I can’t sleep at night! But then, if you do kill the village head, they will kill your father next. And if you kill the son in revenge, they’ll kill your mother then. This is what happens when you fight!
Y: Well, what do you want me to do then?!!!
R: The Aki Magistrate doesn’t want the Domain to know he’s taken money from the village head. So we tell the people there.
R: I heard from my brother. There’s an under-secretary called Yoshida Tōyō in the domain. He’s said to have been ordered confinement at home. This Yoshida-sama openly reprimanded His Lordship’s direct vassal, Matsushita Kahee-sama, for his drunked behaviour. And he’d known all along that Matsushita-sama was His Lordship’s relative! (laugh) Well that’s what you call backbone, don’t you think!
Let’s go to this Yoshida-sama (holds Yataro’s shoulders), seek an audience with him and lodge our appeal
Y: (pushes Ryoma away) How are we ever going to “seek an audience” with such a big man?
R: Who knows, maybe we can!
Y: We are kashi! One trip to Edo and you’ve forgotten everything?!! (starts to cry) The sound of bugs……How can the sound of bugs……Ever get heard by Joshi ears! (storms back into the house. Yajiro and Miwa have tears in their eyes.)
(Later, the Iwasaki family sit around a pot of soup.)
M: Give me your bowl, Yataro.
Y: I’m fine. You have some more, Mother I’ve just eaten something anyway.
Y: I’m going to check out the fields
(Yajiro struggles up)
IY: Yataro! I have no regrets for what I have done
IM: The village head’s tyranny was causing a lot of hardship to everyone. It was for the villagers that your father went to reason with him (Yataro looks at his parents)
(Ryoma returns home)
Servants: Welcome home
R: I’m back.
SG: Ryoma, come over here! The travelling permit has been issued.
SG: You can go to Edo for kenjutsu training for another year.
SO: Do your best, Ryoma!
R: (forced smile) Thank you.
SO: Why are you looking so unhappy?
R: (to Gonpei) Do I need to set out immediately?
SG: You’re still involved in the Iwasaki dispute, aren’t you?
R: I just can’t leave them like this.
SG: This is not your business!
R: Even so, Yataro is my friend too!
SG: Even if he’s your friend….
SO: Well said, Ryoma! It shouldn’t be a big deal to postpone your departure for a bit.
SO: Brother, aren’t you always teaching Harui that she mustn’t just think about herself? (slaps Ryoma on the shoulder) Do what you have to do, Ryoma! (looks at the rest of the family) If there’s a problem, we’ll all help you! (to Gonpei) Right, Brother?
(The Sakamoto women nod and look at Gonpei.)
SG: …..I guess so.
R: Thank you so much, Sisters and Mother! Thank you so much, Brother!
Y: (from the yard) Ryoma! Are you here Ryoma! Ryoma!
R: Yataro! (runs out to him)
Y: Where’s Yoshida Tōyō’s house?
Y: Where is it?!
(At the Yoshida residence. Yoshida Tōyō copies Chinese poetry. His servant enters.)
Servant: Your bed is ready, sir.
Servant: What should we do about those two, sir? (Yoshida does not answer.) Today’s the third day already.
(Morning. Yataro and Ryoma sleep on the doorstep of the Yoshida residence.)
Servant: Get up. Get up now!
(Yataro wakes. Sees the men.)
Y: Ryoma! Ryoma! (slaps his leg) Ryoma!
R: Ow….whaaat? (sees the men and kneels immediately)
(Yataro and Ryoma are taken to see Yoshida Tōyō. They kneel on the ground outside his room, heads low while Yoshida dresses behind a screen.)
Y:o o o ooI am the son of Iwasaki Yajiro, from Inokuchi village in the Aki district. My name is Yataro.
R:o o o ooI am the brother of Sokamoto Gonpei from Honmachi, my name is Ryoma.
Servant: Yoshida-sama is willing to listen to your grievances.
Y/R:o o oThank you my lord!
Servant: However, as mere kashi who dare to appeal directly to Yoshida-sama, you must be already prepared for the worst. If Yoshida-sama should decide that your appeal is a waste of time, I will execute you here at once, and there will be no protest. (Ryoma and Yataro look at each other, shocked) Fine then, let’s hear it.
Y: (nods) Yes sir …….(hesitates)
R: (whisper) Yataro!
Y: (nods again) Some days ago, there was a dispute in my village. The village head, Shimada Benemon, channeled the water from the river into his own fields, monopolizing it all for himself! My father Yajiro did not agree to that and went to talk to them. As a result, he was brutally beaten up. My father is seriously injured and on the verge of death!
But the Aki Magistrate-sama held that my father was at fault and let the Village Head off unpunished. He made a decision of great injustice!
R: But there is more to it, behind all of this. (Yoshida Tōyō starts to pay attention). The Aki Magistrate-sama has been receiving money and valuable gifts from the Village Head. That’s the reason he made such a biased judgement!
Y: How can such wrongdoing be allowed to go on?!!
R: I beg you….I beg you Yoshida-sama with the power vested in you, to open up this case again!
Y: I beg you please!
R: I beg you please!
YT: You say your name is Sakamoto Ryoma?
R: Yes sir!
YT: Why did you come here?
R: Wha..I saw with my own eyes how brutally injured Yajiro-dono was. Furthermore…..I cannot accept a decision of such great injustice!
YT: (walks out to talk to them) But these things happen everywhere…. all the time. This is not something that needs my special attention, is it?
Y: But….if we swallow it this time….
YT: Is there anything else you can do?!
(Ryoma and Yataro are speechless. Yoshida walks off. His servant prepares to unsheathe his sword.)
R: Please wait! With all due respect, His Lordship’s relative, Matsushita Kahee-sama spends his days on the drink, losing his power of judgement. It is said, that nobody dares to say a thing about it! But…..but only Yoshida-sama would not tolerate such behaviour and hit Matsushita-sama in front of His Lordship!
Y: Even though Yoshida-sama knew you could be removed from office, or punished for a act of disrespect! Yoshida-sama you would surely surely understand our sorrow!
YT: Quiet!! Of course I can do it! Because I’m a genius!
YT: I will be reinstated before long. His Lordship knows very well how strong my capabilities are. A person like me can do whatever they like! Iwasaki Yataro……
Y: Yes sir!
YT: What abilities do you have? Sakamoto Ryoma…..
R: Yes sir!
YT: What accomplishments have you got? People who have no power can only choose to keep their mouths shut. That is the way of the world.
(Yoshida leaves, followed by his servant. Ryoma looks at Yataro, who has angry tears in his eyes. Later, Yataro stands in the rain while Ryoma sits on the porch of a deserted house.)
Y: You lied. You lied to me. You were the one who said that telling Yoshida Tōyō will help
R: I’m sorry.
Y: Help? What help? We almost got killed!
R: That’s why I’m apologizing…..
Y: What’s wrong with you?! You spent a whole year in Edo, what have you done?!
R: I know, I’m still very immature!
Y: You leave my family alone from now on! You’re lucky I didn’t beat you up this time. Dammit! (starts to leave)
R: What are you planning to do Yataro? (runs out in the rain) Are you going to give up?
Y: Have you already forgotten Tōyō’s words? We are Kashi (lips shivering) There’s nothing we can do!! (starts to cry) I give up! I give up! Give up!
R: Don’t give up Yataro!
Y:ooo(throws a rock at Ryoma) Stop bugging me!
R: What can you do if you give up?
Y: (starts throwing things at Ryoma) Go away! Go away! You meddling busybody!! (Ryoma is silent. Yataro storms away)
(Night. Yataro stands in front of the Aki Magistracy, yanks out his sword and starts to carve words on the front door.)
R: Just as I thought. (Yataro turns around to see Ryoma, then goes on engraving.) I didn’t think you would give in so easily. Is that graffiti?
Y: It’s …graffiti.
R: (sits down to watch) What a loser!
Y: Yes…I am…. a loser. (panting) But at this moment, this is all ……I can do……..Dammit…
R: Yataro! You once said, you’re the most brilliant and you know how to get on well in life. But that’s a misconception (Yataro looks at Ryoma) You’re….(laugh) nothing but a useless man.
Y: (walks over to Ryoma) Then I ask you Ryoma. What about you? You’re not in the least related to our family. Yet you almost got yourself executed by Yoshida Tōyō. Why throw your life away with me?
R: (looking at Yataro, eye to eye) Because you came back. You had wanted so desperately to go to Edo. And yet Iwasaki Yataro came all the way back for his father. When I saw you, filthy and bloodied, and your clothes torn, I was (hand on heart) shaken by you in here.
Y: (emotional, trying hard to hold his tears) What….what a stupid reason! (goes back to the door) What a waste of time, asking you! (resumes carving) Damn!
R: To tell the truth, Yataro, I’m going to Edo again. I’m sorry.
Y: You really are blessed by the gods.
(Ryoma, expecting a blow-up from Yataro, looks embarrased)
Y: Don’t waste your chance again this time.
(Ryoma looks up in surprise, realizes Yataro knows about the wasted months. Yataro grins and goes back to his work. Ryoma nods and smiles.)
(The next morning, people crowd around the door, reading the words carved on it.)
Official: Move away! Move off! There’s nothing to see! Move off!
(Kondo Chojiro arrives.)
KC: ”Bureaucrats are made from corruption, Prison is decided by personal preference” This is so true!
(At Yataro’s home. Saki cooks soup while Miwa and Yajiro talk to Ryoma.)
IY: This is?
R: Yataro traded in his sword for money.
IY: That rusty old sword can fetch such a lot of money?!
IM: We were just worrying what to do. All because this man doesn’t want to work, and Yataro has gone and done something like that!
IY: (hastily picking up the money) No, he did well. I’m satisfied, he’s helped me vent my anger.
R: (laugh) I feel the same too.
IY: No! You should not, Sakamoto-san.
IY: Why didn’t you go to jail too? You’ve let me down.
IY: Reflect on it.
IM: (to Yajiro) You’re the one who needs to reflect!
Saki: I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!
R: No worries, no worries
(Yanosuke starts to cry. Yajiro walks off without a word.)
R: As old dad said…perhaps. (Forced laugh)
(Ryoma looks at Yajiro who sits away, hiding his grief. In prison, guards try to push Yataro into a cell.)
Guard: In! Get in now! (Yataro struggles but is finally thrown in.) You stay in there until we get orders from above!
Y: Wait and see Ryoma! (tears up) I’ll be climbing up out of here!
(Ryoma is on the road to Edo alone. He hurries on his way.)
R: Wait and see Yataro! I’ll be working hard in my lessons this time!
