<Ansei 3 (1856) Edo>
Y: (narration) On returning to Edo, Ryoma found the city as bustling and flourishing as ever.
(At Chiba dojo, Ryoma presents himself to Chiba Sadakichi and Juntaro.)
R: I’ve come back sir. From now on, I’ll be able to train under Chiba sensei again. Thank you for your guidance
CJ: (big smile) We’ve waited long for you, Sakamoto-kun! Ah, what a happy day!
R: Yes, sir.
R: Yes, sir.
CS: Did anything happen in Tosa?
R: Yes, my father passed away.
CS: I see.
R: But Father lived a life full of spirit. I believe he felt blessed when he left.
CJ: That…is good to hear.
CS: We all have to die someday. Because of that, we must live our lives fully so we can be worthy when we die.
(Ryoma remembers his father’s words)
SH: Since we have come into this world, we should let our lives burn brightly, until the end. Use it all up! Only then can we truly end our life.
R: (to Sadakichi) I will try my very best to live my life in this way!
CS: (smiles proudly) Is that so?
R: Yes sir.
CS: Good. Jutaro….
CJ: Yes sir.
CS: Make sure Sakamoto’s training is tougher than anyone else.
CJ: I understand Father. You better be prepared, Sakamoto-kun!
R: Yes sir!
S: I’ve brought tea.
CJ: Oh, Sana!
R: (big smile) O’Sana-sama! It’s been a long time!
(Sana serves tea to Ryoma, but is very cold towards him.)
S: (formally) Welcome back.
R: (sobers up) Thank you.
(Juntaro and Sadakichi stare at Sana, surprised at her attitude.)
CJ: Sana, greet him nicely!
S: (pause, then shouts) Please work hard in your training!! (and leaves the room)
(The men all look at her, mouths open.)
CS: What’s wrong with that child….
CJ: …..She’s probably shy (to Ryoma) After all, you haven’t seen each other for some time.
R: Oh….I see (laugh)
Episode 9 : Inochi no Nedan (命の值段 The Value of Life)
(Sana is cooking in the kitchen. Jutaro barges in.)
CJ: What was that attitude?!! (Sana ignores him) Why were you so cold to him?
S: 2 years and 4 months! He said it like he was coming back immediately. In the end he made me wait for 2 years and 4 months! (starts to cry)
CJ: I can understand how you feel, Sana. But, it’s not going to help to do things that Sakamoto-kun dislikes!
S: Of course I know that!
CJ: To give him a good impression, you’ve taken up Tea, Dance and even cooking!
S: Oh stop it!!! (hits Jutaro on the head with a ladle) Stop!
CJ: Ouch! That’s hot!
S: I don’t know why I was so cold to him just now!
CJ: You don’t know? Ouch!
S: Brother, you stupid idiot! (hits him again)
(At the Tosa Clan lodgings, Ryoma and Okada Izo wipe up after their training.)
R: Coming back after such a long break, the training in Chiba dojo today is just as rigorous as ever!
OI: (not very excited) That sounds great.
R: By the way, I haven’t seen Takechi-san at all since I came back in Edo.
OI: Sensei lives in the Momoi Dojo now.
R: The one in Asarigashi?
OI: Sensei is already the head coach there!
R: Head coach? But Takechi-san has only been in Edo for….
OI: Since then, Momoi has become more strictly disciplined than any other dojo. Takeshi-sensei’s reputation is well-known across all of Edo now!
(Ryoma visits Takechi Hanpeita)
R: (marvelling at Takechi’s lodgings) Just like Takechi-san alright! Head coach at Momoi in such a short time! And they’re mostly troublemakers over there, but you’ve changed it into a respectable dojo now. That’s really amazing! (Starts playing with a bucket of water in the yard) Perhaps it won’t take long, before Takechi-san rises high above everyone else. (smiles)
TH: Ryoma, my real motive for coming to Edo, is not for kenjutsu training
R: I know. You wanted to liaise with the Joui faction from different clans, right?
TH: Yes (looks at the flower that’s opened on his plant) In fact, we have a meeting tonight.
(Night. Takechi has taken Ryoma to meet his Joui counterparts.)
TH: This is Sumiya Toranosuke-sama from Mito.
ST: I’m Sumiya.
R: I’m Sakamoto Ryoma from Tosa.
TH: And here, from Satsuma, Kabayama San’en-dono
KS: My name is Kabayama San’en. I’m honoured to meet you.
R: The honour is mine. How do you do?
TH: Just like me, they’ve all worked hard for Joui in their own respective domains.
Misc: Your guest is here, my lords.
TH: Let him in.
(Katsura Kogoro enters.)
KK: I’m sorry I’m late.
ST: Not at all. We’ve only just arrived.
TH: From Chosu, this …..
R: It’s been a long time!
KK: You’ve come to Edo again!
R: I was invited here by Takechi-san tonight.
KK: I see. I’m so glad you came! (They both laugh)
TH: (to Ryoma) Do you know Katsura Kogoro already?
R: When Perry came, we saw the black ship together at the Haneda coast.
KK: I thought I was dead when the waves crashed over us!
R: Yes, yes!
KS: Oh I see.
SO: What a coincidence!
TH: Fine, let’s get started
KK: Ah before that, can I have a drink first, Takechi-sama?
ST: (Laugh) You’re right!
(Katsura moves to sit cross-legged between Kabayama San’en and Sasaki Otoya another retainer from Chosu)
KK: Oh, excuse me.
KS: Please, Katsura-dono! (pours sake for him)
KK: (finishes his cup) Mmm, nice!
TH: Well then, let’s start now. (They all look at Takechi.)
R: How impatient you are, Takechi-san! (they laugh)
KK: No, no, I understand. Let’s begin now.
TH: (clears his throat) The Bakufu’s stance is much too weak against America. If this goes on, foreigners will trample all over Japan at will.
SO: You’re right!
KK: To protect Japan, we must work together. We’ll each create a storm of Joui within our own domains.
KS: Together, this will shake up the foundations of the Bakufu.
TH: Because of that, we must make sure everyone in the country understands the word “Joui”. Ryoma, are you sure you know what it means?
R: Well Joui is…. to expel foreign countries. (Katsura Kogoro laughs at his simplistic explanation)
ST: In Mito, even little children know what Joui means.
KS: Our Satsuma domain is being controlled by the Joui faction now. (Ryoma and Takechi are shocked.)
KK: The Chosu Lord Mōri Takachika-sama has taken my views, and has decided to advocate Joui across the domain.
R: I didn’t know Katsura-san was such an important person!
KK: What about the Tosa clan, Takechi-dono?
TH: (stunned) Eh? Oh that….
KS: Takechi-dono is so hard-working, they must be doing very well over there?
TH: B-but of course…….
ST: You’re so reliable. (Ryoma keeps quiet.)
KK: That’s Takechi-dono, alright!! (Takechi pretends to laugh along.)
(After the gathering, Takechi and Ryoma walk home.)
R: Wow, everybody’s thinking of such big things. Shaking up the Bakufu is something I would never have considered. But (runs in front and turns to face Takechi excitedly) you’re talking to them as equals. Takechi-san is really amazing! (laughs)
TH: Stop it! (very agitated) I’ve never felt so ashamed in my life! Back in Tosa, they wouldn’t even let me into the castle, let alone talk to His Lordship about Joui. That’s beyond dreaming!
R: Well, Tosa distincts between the Joshi and Kashi social classes. We can’t be compared with the likes of Mito and Chosu.
TH: Then we’ll just have to make them agree to it. We’ll just have to make the Joshi agree to us!!
R: That’s it! You can do it, Takechi-san!
TH: (faces Ryoma) Can I?
R: Of course!
TH: (grabs Ryoma) Then, you join us too!
TH: You heard what they said today. Don’t you get it still?! Joui is the only way! America is forcing itself onto Japan to make us trade with them. They want to take over Japan! At a time like this, how can you still insist on your dislike for fighting?! Ryoma!
R: But fighting…(grins apologetically)
TH: What is the matter with you?!!
R: I’m so sorry!
Misc: Please take your shoes off!
(At Edo Castle, the Americans walk in, ignoring requests of Bakufu officials to abide by Japanese etiquette. They carry a box covered with the American flag.)
(Misc: Take them off! Take your shoes off please!)
<Edo-jo, Edo Castle>
Y: (narration) Just as Takechi Hanpeita said, the American ambassador Townsend Harris was forcibly pushing his demands onto the Bakufu already.
<Kyoto, Imperial Palace>
Y: (narration) Even so, the Bakufu finally decided to begin trading with America, blatantly ignoring the wishes of Emperor Kōmei* in Kyo. But….
Kugyō*: The Emperor has spoken.
(The Bakufu Chief Elder Hotta Masayoshi* has sought an audience with the Imperial Emperor and is being advised the Emperor’s reply via the Kugyō / court courtiers)
Kugyō*: ”We dislike foreigners.”
Y: (narration) These words from the Emperor gave Joui advocates like Takechi Hanpeita and Katsura Kagoro, the greatest support ever. But for me, I had no idea any of this was happening …..
(Yataro in prison. His beard and hair are very long. Jailers throw food into the cell.)
Jailer: Meal time!
Misc: Food! Oh, meal time!
Y: (climbing over other prisoners to the gate) Wait! Wait! When am I ever going to be released?
Y: I should be more or less forgiven by now.
Jailer: You deface the entrance of the Magistracy and you dare to ask ?!! Stupid Fool!
Y: Who are you to call me a fool! Brute!
Man: Is it so hard to pass the time in here?
Y: Mind your own business, newcomer. After all, you’re probably here for theft or stealing, aren’t you?
Man: I regret to say, they accused me of stealing 200 ryo and threw me in here.
Y: 200 ryo?! Are you a big-time burglar or what?
Man: I just bought something for 10 ryo* and tried to sell it out at 200 ryo. I didn’t do anything wrong.
Y: Selling something that costs 10 ryo at a price of 200 ryo, that’s obvious fraud.
Man: (laugh) You don’t get it, do you?
Man: Say we have a manju (sweet bun) here. To someone who’s not hungry, it’s probably worth no more than 1 mon*. But if he’s starving, he’d happily give 10 mon just for it. And I will then sell the manju to him at 10 mon. This is what you call trading.
Y: (stunned) Trading…..
(At Chiba dojo, Chiba Jutaro watches closely Ryoma as he practices. At the end of training, as the students prepare to leave….)
R: Yes, sir!
CJ: Can you come with me for a while?
R: Yes sir?
(Night. Ryoma and Jutaro have dinner together.)
CJ: A drink after training, just tastes exceptionally good!
R: Well, Jutaro-sensei, this is….(motions to the food)
CJ: Just a get-together once in a while. Go on, relax, have a drink!
CJ: (pours sake for Ryoma) Come, come.
R: Thank you (hesitant) Then I’ll drink first (starts to drink his sake)
CJ: I really like you.
(Ryoma sprays sake all over Jutaro’s face.)
R: Oh….I…..I’m sorry! (tries to wipe Jutaro’s face with his sleeve) I’m so sorry!!
CJ: (laugh) It’s OK! Don’t worry! Don’t worry!
R: I’m sorry!
CJ: I mean I like and admire your personality. No, not only me, my sister too.
CJ: What do you think about her? (pours another cup of sake for Ryoma) What do you think of Sana?
R: Well….of course I have the utmost respect for her
CJ: Respect is not necessary. Don’t you think she’s more feminine now?
CJ: Since she’s matured, she’s become very pretty
R: (with exaggeration) Yes!
CJ: Her charm is very evident.
R: (pause) Yes!
S: Excuse me.
S: (brings food in) I’ve brought appetizers
CJ: How thoughtful, Sana! How thoughtful, right? Sakamoto-kun?
(Sana serves them.)
CJ: Oh! This nishime* looks delicious!
CJ: Did you make it, Sana?
S: Yes I did.
CJ: Sana made it, Sakamoto-kun~~
R: Thank you!
S: (shy) You’re welcome.
CJ: Ow! Ow! Ow!
CJ: I’ve a stomachache! I need the toilet!
R: (gets up to help Jutaro) What’s the matter?!
CJ: (pushes Ryoma off easily) Don’t worry! Sana, look after Sakamoto-kun for me.
(Sana does not even look at Jutaro. Picks up the sake bottle at once.)
CJ: Ow! Ow! Ow!
R: Are you OK? Sensei! (to himself) Is he OK?
(Ryoma turns around and stops short when he sees Sana with the sake bottle.)
R: Oh….Yes ma’am. (Jutaro listens outside.) Would O’Sana-sama have some too?
S: I don’t drink…
R: I see.
S: I’ll have one.
S: (picks up a cup) Would you please?
R: Sure. (Pours sake for her)
S: (finishes the cup in one go) Delicious!
R: (starts to realize what’s happening) …..That’s great.
(Sana smiles coyly at Ryoma, who laughs uncomfortably)
R: Then I’ll start eating. (Jutaro sneaks away.) This is great! (Sana looks estatic) This is so good, O’Sana-sama! I didn’t know O’Sana-sama could cook so well! By the looks of it, you’ll have no problems at all, marrying into any big family.
S: I….(looks straight at Ryoma) I don’t care about marrying into a good family
R: Oh…. (continues to eat)
S: My father and brother had said to me, “You just need to look for a good man.”
R: Oh I see… (focusing on his food)
S: I want to cook for you Sakamoto-san.
(Ryoma stops, looks at Sana)
S: I….I have always …….
R: O’Sana-sama!! (puts his food down) So slow……(throws chopstick down, moves backward slowly) He’s so slow, that Jutaro-sensei! (gets up quickly) I’ll go see what’s wrong!
S: (pulls Ryoma back down and holds on) Brother is fine! Please listen to me.
R: No! O’Sana-sama is very drunk !
S: I’m not drunk!
R: Your face is all red.
S: Not red at all!
R: Very red! Very red! (Moves away from Sana) Red all over!
S: All over? (hands on her face)
R: Yes. Tonight, you better have an early rest! (Gets up quickly) I should get going now! (Runs away out of the room through the yard.)
(Sana watches wide-eyed as Ryoma escapes. Out in the streets, Ryoma checks behind him and finally stops running.)
R: This is not good……(keeps looking back) What should I do?!
(He catches his breath on a bridge. Remembers the scene with Kao in the forest.)
R: I’ve always liked you. When the time comes, I will definitely come back for you
(Back at the bridge, Ryoma looks troubled.)
Y: (narration) At the same time, something else was happening…..
(In another part of town, Tosa Kashi Yamamoto Takuma* and another samurai Tanamura Sakuhachi walk back home from drinks.)
TS: It’s too inhibiting lately at Momoi dojo, I can’t stand it. Can’t do this, can’t do that! Takechi-san is such a nag!
YT: Well, he’s always been a very serious person
TS: Yamamoto, are there lots of people like that in Tosa?
YT: Of course not! There are undemanding guys like Sakamoto Ryoma. But he’s good friends with Takechi-san too.
(A merchant Sashuya Kinzo passes and bows to the samurai.)
TS: (to Sashuya) Hey! Did you just glare at me?
SK: No, no, how could I?
TS: Just a mere merchant and you dare to glare at me?! (runs after the merchant, hand on sword)
YT: Tanamura-san! Tanamura-san! Tanamura-san! (runs to stop Tanamura)
TS: (laughs) Did you see his face?!!
YT: Stop playing these horrible pranks, Tanamura-san!
YT: (sees a box on the ground) Look! He dropped that.
(Tanamura opens it to find a golden pocket watch inside.)
YT: A pocket watch?!
TS: This is a rare treasure! (They look at each other)
<Tsukiji, Tosa Clan Lodgings>
(A few days later, 2 Tosa Joshi enter the Tosa Clan Lodgings. Kashi kneel and bow when they pass. Takechi Hanpeita talks to his students in a hall.)
TH: I am determined, to spread the spirit of Joui throughout Tosa as soon as possible. We must not lag behind the other clans! Because of that, you must all become worthy and dignified samurai! We must not be looked down on just because we are kashi!
Misc: Yes sir!
(Tosa Joshi Togawa Shinjiro enters the hall.)
TH: It’s Togawa-sama!
TS: The second-hand shop in Asakusa has made a report to the Magistracy. It seems a customer tried to sell them a stolen item.
TS: An imported pocket watch. The owner of the second hand shop saw a problem immediately, and apparently asked the customer’s name and domain.
TH: Please wait a moment. What does this have to do with us?
TS: That man said he was Tosa retainer, Yamamoto Takuma.
HS: ….Yamamoto….Takuma? (Yamamoto raises his head. All eyes on him)
TS: Are you Yamamoto? Were you planning to sell off the stolen watch and earn some fast money?
TH: Is that true, Takuma? (Takuma looks at Takechi, speechless)
HS: Can’t be!
OI: Yamamoto-san couldn’t have done something like that!
TH: Tell me it’s not true, Takuma….Say it’s not true!
YT: Takechi-sensei!! (He breaks down in tears. Takechi is shocked.)
TS: It seems there’s no mistake then. You’re the shame of the Tosa clan! Yamamoto’s punishment will be your responsibility, Takechi. You take care of it!
(Togawa Shinjiro leaves. The kashi are shocked and Takuma continues to cry. Takechi is in despair.)
YT: I’m so sorry, Takechi-sensei!
TH: Tell me what happened, Takuma.
YT: Tanamura was with me and told me to sell the watch off.
HS: The bad drunk, Tanamura Sakuhachi?
YT: I’m very sorry! I’m very sorry!
OI: Takechi-sensei, Yamamoto-san was just incited by that Tanamura!
All: That’s right! That’s right, sensei! Please forgive him! Sensei!
TH: I’ve said it before, haven’t I, Takuma? We must be worthy samurai.
YT: Yes sir!
TH: If I should forgive you now, how will I be able to advocate Joui in future? No-one will listen to me anymore. (Takuma cries. Takechi closes his eyes.) Takuma, you must commit harakiri.
TH: We’ve already decided to make His Lordship in Tosa, the leader of the Joui movement around the country! (Puts his hand on Takuma) Takuma, if you still consider yourself a samurai, then face your harakiri bravely, as an apology to His Lordship!
(Evening. Okada Izo and other kashi are outside Yamamoto Takuma’s room. Ryoma returns.)
OI: Ryoma!! Something terrible has happened!
(At Takechi’s lodging. Takechi Hanpeita sits in silence, staring at the pocket watch.)
R: Takechi-san. It’s Ryoma. Can I come in?
TH: Come in. What is it?
R: (enters, dead serious) Did you ask Takuma to commit harakiri?
TH: Tomorrow morning, when the sun rises.
(The Tosa kashi are outside Takuma’s room, keeping him company. Okada Izo runs out. He goes to Takechi’s place and listens in to Ryoma and Takechi.)
R: Takechi-san, Takuma is Tomi-san’s first cousin. How are you going to explain to Tomi-san, when you return to Tosa?
TH: That’s got nothing to do with it.
R: (picks up the watch) Can’t we just return this and apologize? Beg for their forgiveness? It’s just a pocket watch!
TH: Of course not! This is all for the sake of Joui!
R: For the sake of Joui, are you willing to kill your companions?
TH: You keep out of this!
(Takechi glares at Ryoma, who stares back. Ryoma takes the pocket watch.)
R: I’m going to return this. It’s Sashuya in Shimomaki-cho, right? (gets up)
R: Someone will have to take this back. (slams the sliding door shut)
(Takechi is confused. He doesn’t know what to do.)
R: (voiceover) I’m very sorry!!
(At the shop, Ryoma gives the watch to Sashuya Kinzo.)
R: Although he was drunk at that time, what Yamamoto Takuma did, was still inexcusable.
SK: Even though you’ve returned my pocket watch, I still can’t retract my complaint.
R: True, this is not something that could be forgiven with just an apology. But, Takuma has been ordered to commit harakiri!
R: He’s already full of remorse for what he’s done! If he still has to die for it, I just don’t have the heart to see it happen!
SK: B-but even though you say that…
R: (kneels down) I beg you! Please forgive Takuma!
SK: (gets up in shock) No, my lord Samurai!
R: You can stop the killing! Please pardon him! (bows low)
SK: (hastens to stop Ryoma) No, no! Please don’t!
R: Please! I beg you, Sashuya-sama! Sashuya-sama….!
SK: (frantic) Don’t do that! I….
R: (looks up. Sashuya immediately goes on his knees) Please, anything that I can do for you, just tell me! Please!
(At Takechi’s room. Ryoma has returned.)
R: Sashuya said he’s willing to dismiss his case. (Takechi looks at him) Tosa will no longer have to bear any shame in front of the world.
R: (smiles) There’s no more reason for Takuma to commit harakiri now, Takechi-san!
(The door opens suddenly)
HS: Ryoma! What do you think you’re saying?!
(Hirai Shujiro enters with other kashi.)
HS: This is not a matter of forgiveness!
All: That’s right!
HS: Takuma betrayed us.
R: (jumps up) Hold it!
HS: If we let Takuma off, then everything that Sensei has worked for will be wasted.
(Takechi closes his eyes, face is in pain. Ryoma and Shujiro stare each other down.)
HS: Izo, have you been led astray by Ryoma too? You call yourself a disciple of Takechi-sensei?!!
TH: That’s enough, Shujiro! Takuma, use your time tonight to write to your parents in Tosa.
(Takuma sinks to the floor. Takechi gets up to leave, but Ryoma stands in his way, grabbing his shoulders.)
R: Hold it! (Takechi pushes Ryoma off and leaves the room) Takechi-san!
HS: Ryoma! You’re such an eyesore. You’re not one of us, why are you here? Get up, Takuma! Izo, you too. (The other kashi leave with Takuma) Let me take this opportunity to set the record straight. When you get back to Tosa, stay away from Kao. My sister is going to marry into a worthy matching family.
(Shujiro leaves. Izo unwillingly follows. Ryoma slams his fist on the door, frustrated and pained. In Tosa, Kao looks at the full moon, with hope in her eyes. Yataro sits in the moonlight, talking to himself in jail.)
Y: I was always considering how I could use my studies to reach the top. But trading is a totally different game. The prices of goods depend on the individual themselves. With my brillance, I’m sure to make it work. (He starts to laugh) Trading……..(Yataro looks at the full moon, with hope in his eyes)
(Edo, Tosa Clan lodgings. Ryoma is out in the yard. He looks at the full moon, but is thoughtful. He unsheathes his katana and strikes once slowly. He remembers Takechi’s words.)
TH: This is all for the sake of Joui.
(Ryoma strikes again.)
TH: You keep out of this!
(Ryoma strikes, forcefully this time. He’s made up his mind. Yamamoto Takuma is alone in his room. He cries as he finishes his letter.)
(Someone knocks rapidly on his door. And again, more deliberately. Takuma opens the door to find Ryoma, who looks at him kindly. Later, Takuma follows Ryoma as they run in the streets, constantly looking back.)
R: (whisper) This way!
(Ryoma takes Takuma to a pier. There is a boat waiting. They look around for people.)
R: You’re a free man from now on, Takuma. Yamamoto Takuma was born into this world. Don’t waste your life, throwing it away so easily!
R: Takuma! You can’t go back to Tosa anymore. But then…..But, there will always be…always be places where you can live! (Takuma starts to cry) Never forget what you have done. But, you mustn’t grovel or beg either. Live on…live on with dignity! Do you understand?
YT: (through tears) Yes.
(Ryoma leads Takuma to the boat and gives him a bag of money.)
YT: (looks at the bag) Ryoma-san…..
R: Go, Takuma! (to the boatman) Please go.
R: Go! Quickly! Take care! Take care, Takuma!
YT: I’m sorry! (starts to cry) I’m sorry! (Ryoma nods)
(The next morning. Takechi reports on Takuma’s escape to Joshi Togawa Shinjiro)
TH: It was due to my negligence, that Yamamoto Takuma was able to escape.
TS: You mean you weren’t the one who let him go?
TH: All arrangements have been made for Yamamoto’s seppuku (harakiri)
TS: But Takechi, you still have to pay for your mistake….
(Later, Takechi packs up to return to Tosa.)
R: Have they ordered you back to Tosa?
TH: My grandmother’s health is deteriorating by the day. I can’t bear to leave Tomi to shoulder it all by herself. (pause) You let him go, didn’t you? (Ryoma does not answer) Ryoma, I’ve always treated you as my friend. When I’m with you, you’re the only one who lets I feel at peace. However, do not stand in my way anymore! I cannot be tied down by little things in front of me now.
R: Takuma’s life is a little thing in your eyes?
TH: That’s right.
R: Only the devil can say something like that.
(Takechi gives a start on hearing this, but quickly recovers)
TH: Then only the devil can accomplish great deeds!
R: In Takechi-san’s heart, you have the great honourable aspirations to change Tosa, to change Japan. But you also have that compassion towards a single stalk of flower. (Takechi looks at his flower) The devil will not appreciate flowers (smiles)
TH: (picks up his sword and cuts the flower off) Don’t talk like you know everything!
R: (realizes Takechi has changed. He bows) I wish you a safe trip back (he walks away)
(Later at Chiba dojo, Ryoma is teaching in the big hall.)
R: That’s it! That’s it! Very good! (He smiles when he talks to his students, but the smile disappears immediately) One more time then! Come! (Chiba Sana looks at him sadly from outside.) Yes! Yes! That’s right! That looks good! (He is obviously unhappy) Next, we use Kote Men*
Y: (narration) At this time, Ryoma still had no idea, the extent of the storm that Takechi will causew hen he returns to Tosa.
