(At Chiba dojo, Ryoma has formally completed his training. He sits before Chiba Sadakichi to be awarded the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū certification before returning to Tosa. Jutaro and Sana are also present at the ceremony.)
CS: Sakamoto Ryoma, I confer upon you the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū Mokuroku* (Martial Arts Licence of Instructor Level).
Y: (narration) In the year Ansei 5 (1858), Ryoma has reached the final day of his second training placement in Edo.
(Ryoma picks up the scroll slowly.)
CJ: You’ve finally done it, Sakamoto-kun!
R: (Overwhelmed with emotion. Holds the scroll tightly in both hands) Thank you, sir!
CS: Now that you have mastered the way of the sword, it is time to create your own way of life. This is not an easy thing to do, Sakamoto.
R: Yes, sir!
CS: By overcoming these challenges, you will carve out a way of survival that belongs to you Sakamoto Ryoma, alone.
R: Sensei, I will treasure what you just said in my heart, always.
(Chiba Sadakichi smiles and nods.)
Episode10 : Hikisakareta Ai (引きさかれた愛 Love, Ripped Apart)
(Ryoma looks around the practice hall, deep in thought. He takes the scroll out.)
R: (turns around to see Sana enter) O’Sana-sama!
S: Is it time for us to say goodbye?
R: (deep breath) Yes it is.
S: (pause) I’ve….. fallen in love with you.
R: In Tosa, there’s someone very important. To me, no-one can take her place. That’s why I must go back there.
S: And this is the path you choose?
R: (looks at her straight in the eye, smiling kindly) Yes it is.
S: I see. The days we spent on kenjutsu together, are some of the happiest I had. Take care!
R: (pause) Thank you!
S: (looks down) Goodbye.
R: …..I have to go…. (walks off without another word)
(Sana starts to cry. In the streets, Ryoma looks back at Chiba dojo, bows and starts his journey back home.)
Y: (narration) In the same year that Ryoma completed his training in Edo, Japan and America signed the “Treaty of Amity and Commerce”*.
(The Shimoda Magistrate Inoue Kiyonao passes the signed treaty to the US Consul General Townsend Harris. Townsend Harris extends his hand to Inoue Kiyonao who takes it very reluctantly.)
Y: (narration) This treaty was beneficial only to the American side. And the person ordering acceptance of such terms, deciding all on his own, aas the Tairō (Great Elder) of the Bakufu, Ii Naosuke*
(At Edo castle, Ii Naosuke address his vassals)
IN: Those people who criticize my decisions have no idea of the situation at all. If we were to decline the terms and go to war with America, Japan has no hope of winning.
(At the Sakamoto residence in Tosa, Sakamoto Gonpei opens the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū scroll. The rest of the family gasp in wonder.)
SG: So this is the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū Mokuroku.*
SI: This is amazing!
SC: Well done, Ryoma-san!
SH: Uncle Ryoma, you’re incredible!
R: (spots Otome sitting outside the room) Sis, sis, come and have a look!
SO: I want to…..But I can’t leave my husband out here alone.
(Otome’s husband Okanoue Juan sits at the front door, drinking tea. Gonpei immediately goes to invite him in.)
SG: I’m so sorry, Okanoue-dono. Please, please come in and have a look.
OJ: Oh, oh.
SG: Thank you very much.
(Otome rushes in.)
OJ: (reads the scroll) Oh, that’s incredible!
SO: (excited) It sure is!
OJ: Although as a doctor, I don’t understand much of this. But Ryoma-dono must have worked hard on his sword since he was young.
R: As a child, I had to endure the harsh training from Otome-nee.
SO: RYOMA!! (Ryoma stops short) Don’t say things like that in front of my husband!
OJ: No, I’d already heard of your nickname long ago, “the Sakamoto Onio-sama”
SO: Who told you that?!
SI: I’d heard it too, before I married into this family.
SC: Me too.
SH: Everyone knows about it!
R: Oh! When did you start talking like an adult? Harui! (They all laugh.)
(Later, Ryoma has a bath while Otome tends to the fire for the hot water.)
R: Well, I never thought Sis would get married. (laugh) This is the first time I’ve seen Sis so meek and gentle!
SO: To be honest, their family rules are much too strict for my liking. As long as it’s someone healthy and able to work, I don’t think he cares who he marries.
R: Now how shall I answer to that? (laugh)
SO: You must marry someone you truly love.
R: (pause) That goes without saying.
SO: Eh? (Otome stands up to look inside the bathroom) I say, I say, have you got someone in mind already?
R: No, I’m not going to tell you.
SO: (sticks her hand in the window) Why aren’t you telling me? Hey!
R: (catches her hand and pushes it back out) I don’t care what you say……
R: I’m not telling you!
SO: Tell me …(she goes back to the fire) Ryoma, tell me now!
(Otome blows hard on the fire. It roars up.)
R: Ah! It’s boiling! (Stands up to call out) Stop that!!!
(Later, at the local shrine. Ryoma ties a wish onto a branch of the wishing tree. Kao is with him.)
R: Did you get my letters?
HK: I don’t know how many times I’ve read and reread them.
R: (pleased) I see. Oh yes, I bought you a present.
R: (takes a packet out and unwraps a hair pin) Look!
HK: For me?
R: Yes! Can I put it on for you?
HK: (smiles and nods)
R: Just as I thought! It looks great on you!
HK: (smiles) Thank you~~
R: I’ll tell you, Kao… what this Sakamoto Ryoma here, will be doing from now on. I’ve got it all planned! I’ll teach kenjutsu in Tosa. But, I won’t be asking Brother to build a dojo for me. I’ll use that open space over there, and start with a few children. Then when more and more people come, I’ll build the dojo myself! (Kao smiles and nods.) And then, one day, I will build my own black ship!
HK: Black ship?
R: If I have a huge black ship, I can sail around the world with my family. (Pause) And of course, with you.
R: (smile) Kao, I won’t be leaving anymore. (Kao starts to cry) I want to stay here with you. Will you… be my wife?
HK: (very emotional) Yes!
R: I’m sorry, I’ve made you wait for such a long time.
HK: (shakes her head, unable to talk through her tears)
HK: (crouches down crying)
R: (crouches down with her) Kao, what are you crying for!
HK: Isn’t it all because of you …..
R: (hand on her shoulder) Kao… (they laugh)
Jailer: It’s here, sir.
(Gotō Shōjirō enters the prison cell.)
GS: It stinks in here! What’s that smell! (to the prisoners) Move! Move! (looks at the writing on the wall) What’s that?
Jailer: Mathematical calculations for trading, I hear.
GS: (sees Yataro writing) Is this Iwasaki then?
Y: Who are you?
GS: (looking around the cell) Hata-gun Magistrate, Gotō Shōjirō*. I’ve been sent here by my uncle
GS: Yoshida Tōyō-sama.
(Flashback : Tosa clan under-secretary Yoshida Tōyō reads a missive.)
GS: Yes sir!
YT: Release Iwasaki Yataro from prison.
GS: Yes sir!
Y: (narration) At that time, Yoshida Tōyō-sama had been released from house arrest and reinstated as Under-Secretary. Because of his criticism of Ii Naosuke’s policies, the Tosa daimyo Yamauchi Toyoshige was put on probation, and had to hand over the Tosa administration to Tōyō.
(Ex-Tosa Daimyo Yamauchi Toyoshige / Yōdō is ordered confinement at home.)
YaT: This Tairo of the Bakufu, is much too narrow-minded!
Y: (narration) Taking up the responsibility, Yoshida-sama first focused on the reform of the Tosa domain.
YT: (to the principal officials of the clan) Myself included, from now on, we shall all have our salaries cut by 50%.
Misc: 50%? How can we survive?!
YT: Redundant positions like personal aides will be cancelled (looks at Shibata Bingo) Thank you very much for your services, Shibata-dono.
(Back at his residence, Shibata Bingo is furious, slashing his sword on furniture and doors.)
SB: Damn you, Yoshida Tōyō!
Misc: Master, please calm down!
SB: Kicking me out, just like that!
Misc: Master! There is a man called Takechi Hanpeita……(Shibata is too mad to hear) There is a man called Takechi Hanpeita outside who seeks your audience.
(Takechi Hanpeita kneels in the yard outside the house.)
TH: All over the country now, the determination to expel foreigners and the influence of Joui is very strong. However, Yoshida-sama does not understand this at all. If Shibata-sama is unable to return to the administration as soon as possible, there will be no future for the Tosa clan.
SB: Your name is Takechi?
TH: Yes my Lord.
SB: So you have a plan to bring Tōyō down?
TH: If we can create a storm of Joui across Tosa, Yoshida-sama wouldn’t be able to stay in power much longer.
SB: Storm of Joui?
(Takechi returns to his room. A group of advocates are waiting for him.)
TH: Sorry to have kept you waiting.
Misc: It’s OK.
TH: (to Okada Izo) Go downstairs and make sure nobody comes over. What we’re discussing is no simple matter (goes into the room)
(Izo, surprised, feels left out.)
TH: Listen, do you all know Sanjō Sanetomi-sama in Kyo(to)?
HS: Sanjō Sanetomi-sama*?
TH: He is the greatest supporter of Joui among all the imperial court nobles.
Misc: What about him?
TH: In fact, this is what Shibata-sama told me. In order to line ourselves up with Sanjō Sanetomi-sama, we must plant an insider there.
TH: Who is our Lordship’s sister, Hisahime-sama, married to?
HS: Kinmutsu-sama in Kyo.
TH: And Kinmutsu-sama’s younger brother, is none other than Sanjō Sanetomi-sama. Our insider will look after Hisahime-sama as her maid-in-waiting.
Misc: I see.
TH: Do you have anyone in mind who could take up this position?
Y: (narration) At that time, I was to proceed to Nagasaki under orders from Yoshida Tōyō-sama. Yoshida-sama had read the proposals I wrote while I was in jail, and he saw the talent I had for trading.
(Yataro, very well dressed now, prays for a safe journey at the Tosa shrine. He sets out on his journey looking estatic. He bumps into Ryoma at the entrance of the shrine grounds and the grin disappears.)
R: Yataro! Why….Why are you so well-dressed?
Y: What’s wrong with that?!
R: Oh I’m totally impressed!
Y: Why must I run into you when I’m in such a good mood?
R: (Holding a bokuto/wooden sword) I’ve come for sword practice! I won’t get interrupted here.
Y: Oh I see. You’re showing off your accreditation with the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū curriculum, going around like that.
R: (laugh) You’re just the same!
Y: Just the same? I’m not the Iwasaki Yataro from before. I have to go to NAGASAKI now!
Y: Under orders from Yoshida-sama~~
R: Yoshida Tōyō-sama?
Y: The next time we meet, maybe it won’t be so easy for you to talk to me anymore! (He laughs and strides off)
R: That’s the right attitude! Do your best Yataro! (laugh)
(At the Hirai residence, Kao looks happily at the hair pin that Ryoma gave her.)
HK: Yes? (She quickly wraps it up.)
HS: Can I come in?
HS: (enters with a solemn face) I have something to say to you.
HK: I want to talk to you too, Brother.
HS: Do you know about our Lordship’s sister, Hisahima-sama, who’s now in Kyo?
HK: I do.
HS: Takechi-sensei is now looking for a lady-in-waiting to look after Hisahima-sama. I’ve recommended you.
HK: (stunned) Eh….
HS: On the surface it’s a lady-in-waiting, but in fact you have another role.
HK: Please wait a moment…
HS: You need to monitor the actions of Sanjō Sanetomi-sama for us.
HS: This is a top priority mission for the success of Joui. Go to Kyo, Kao!
HK: (pause) How long….Will I have to be there?
HS: I’m afraid…..You’ll have to spend the rest of your life there.
HK: I’m not going. Why must it be me? I don’t want to leave Tosa. I want to get married in Tosa and live my life happily here.
HS: It’s Ryoma, isn’t it?
HK: (silent affirmation)
HS: I don’t agree!!
HK: Why not?
HS: For someone who doesn’t even know what Joui really means, for someone who won’t stand up to fight at a time when our country is at stake, how can I give you to him!
HK: Ryoma-san has his own way of thinking!
(Shujiro slaps Kao on the face.)
HS: So you’re not going to listen to your Brother?!! (Kao gets up and runs straight out of the house.) Kao! Kao!!
TH: (voiceover) There are other women to choose from.
(Hirai Shujiro has gone to talk to Takechi.)
TH: So, you really don’t need to force your sister, Shujiro
HS: Takechi-sensei, we have to bear the sufferings of the life of a Kashi here. As long as Kao remains in Tosa, she’ll only be treated like an animal by the Joshi, humiliated for the rest of her life! For someone like her to become lady-in-waiting for Hisahime-sama, could there be any blessing better than that?! (Starts to cry) It’s because I’m thinking about my sister’s happiness, that I want her to go to Kyo. (Takechi sighs)
(At the Sakamoto residence, Kao arrives with no shoes on, looking distressed and lost.)
SO: Kao-chan? (notices her condition) Kao-chan…….
SO: Ryoma! Ryoma! Ryoma!
R: What is it, Sis?! (sees Kao) Kao! What happened?
(Night. Takechi reads a book at home while Tomi stays up to keep him company.)
TH: Go to bed. You’ve got a cold, don’t strain yourself.
TT: I’m fine.
TH: You don’t need to worry about me.
TT: (smile) Then I’ll go to bed now.
TH: (nod) Go.
(Takechi hears the dogs barking. Goes out to check. He sees Ryoma standing outside, with a stern look. They talk in the dojo.)
R: Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a deep respect for Takechi-san. “What Takechi-san says must be right.” “What Takechi-san does cannot be wrong.” That’s what I used to think.
TH: But not anymore?
R: Because you’ve changed, Takechi-san. In Edo, you forced Yamaoto Takuma to commit harakiri. And now, you’re making Kao…You’re making her go to Kyo?!! For Joui, you’re willing to sacrifice your childhood companions. Is it really that important?
TH: That goes without saying.
R: (jumps up, furious) Then why don’t you just take Izo and the rest of them to Shimoda. Kill all the foreigners and be done with it?!!
TH: To protect Japan from foreign countries, we need to rectify the present situation in the Bakufu. In order to change the Bakufu, the Tosa clan must become strong. That means, we must possess real power within the domain! You don’t want to be separated from Kao, that’s all!
R: Kao and I have decided we will get married. I will not let her go to Kyo (prepares to leave)
TH: Is that something a samurai should say?!!
R: (furious) I’m not going to bow down to coercion!! Whatever this world comes to, I will use my life to protect the things important to me! This is the oath I’ve made to this sword!! (He storms out.)
(Otome comforts Kao at the Sakamoto home.)
SO: Well, this is such a surprise! I didn’t expect Ryoma and Kao-chan…..
K: I’m sorry to have kept you in the dark.
SO: If Kao-chan is willing to be Ryoma’s wife, we’d bemore than delighted! Don’t worry, if they want to separate Ryoma and Kao-chan because of Joui, they’d have to get past me first!
HK: (smiles) Otome-san
R: I’ve spoken to Takechi-san….
(They see the look on Ryoma’s face and understand what happened.)
R: Don’t worry Kao. I’ll protect you.
SO: Well said! (slaps him on the shoulder) Ryoma, well said!
R: But, you must go home tonight.
R: You can’t stay at my place. (Kao frowns)
SO: Kao-chan, I’ll walk you home.
R: Tomorrow, I’ll wait for you at the old place at the shrine.
HK: (smiles) OK.
(Otome and Kao leave the Sakamoto house.)
SO: Whenever did Ryoma grow into such a real man?!
SO: I’m a bit envious of Kao-chan! (laugh) Let’s go! (Kao smiles happily.)
(At Takechi dojo, Takechi Hanpeita is struggling with himself.)
TH 1: Why are you hesitating? Didn’t you want to be celebrated as the hero behind Joui, and possess the power to control the country?
TH 2: There’s nothing to be concerned about. Forget what Ryoma just said!
TH 3: If you keep on like this, will you ever get to be the person you aspire to be?
TH: (trembling) Be quiet!
(Next morning, Takechi goes to see Shibata Bingo at his house.)
SB: What was that?
TH: To be capable of looking after Hisahime-sama’s daily life, while investigating Sanjō Sanetomi-sama’s intentions at the same time, I worry if this mission might be too much for Hirai Kao to handle.
SB: Takechi, I’ve already said I want that woman.
TH: I’m terribly sorry! I will find someone else at once! In fact, there are a couple of candidates I have in mind…..
SB: (jumps up) Do you want to discredit me? Is that it?! I’ve already advised Hisahime-sama about it! And now I have to tell her we’re changing the person? If we don’t find someone to take responsibility by harakiri, this will not end!
(Ryoma plays with children while he waits for Kao at the shrine.)
Child: I found it!
R: Ah! There’re some here too!
R: Oh! We’ve collected so many!
Child: I’ll bring them back to show my mother.
Child: Are you going to stay here, uncle?
R: Yes, I’m waiting for someone here. Be careful on your way home.
Misc: Goodbye! Goodbye!
R: Goodbye! Hold on to them tight!
(Ryoma reminisces on the times when he and Kao were kids.)
Misc: (at the waterfall) Get on with it, Ryoma! Jump already! Be quick!
HK: Brother, don’t….
HS: Shut up, Kao! Ryoma, jump!
(He thinks about the bento Kao prepared for him at the Kuma river.)
R: Hmmmm, this is great! It’s really good, Kao!
K: Oh, don’t exaggerate!
K: It’s Ryoma-san I like. Ever since I was a child….I have always liked Ryoma-san!
(Then, about the time he declared to her in the woods.)
R: All this time, I’ve always liked you!
(Ryoma nods. He’s sure of what to do. In the meantime, Kao puts on Ryoma’s hair pin and walks happily out the house, to find Takechi and Shujiro waiting for her.)
HS: If you insist on being with Ryoma at all costs (kneels down) I will…….commit harakiri now.
HK: (stunned, looks at Takechi for help) Takechi-san?
(Takechi ignores her. Shujiro starts to prepare for harakiri.)
HK: Don’t please!! Brother! Don’t! Please stop! Brother! (holds on to Shujiro’s sword) Brother, please don’t! (starts to cry, but not letting go. Takechi looks away.) Stop it, please! (Brother and sister struggle for the sword, both crying.) Brother!!
(Ryoma is still waiting at the shrine. Frustrated, he goes to Kao’s home to look for her.)
R: (at the gate) Kao! Kao! Is there anyone here! Kao!
(Kindo Chojiro from the manju shop arrives with a big box.)
KC: It’s really Sakamoto-sama!
KC: Hirai-sama just came to our shop and ordered celebration buns.
KC: It seems that Kao-sama is going far away.
(Ryoma realizes what happened and rushes off. At Shibata Bingo’s house, Kao presents herself, accompanied by Takechi and Shujiro.)
HK: I’m Hirai Shujiro’s sister, my name is Kao. It is my greatest honour, this time, to be assigned the opportunity to wait on Hisahime-sama. I am truly grateful, my Lord and will do my utmost for my mission.
SB: Raise your head. She’s a real beauty, Takechi
TH: Yes my lord.
SB: You must take care in this mission. Your effort will be key to our spreading Joui across Tosa, and taking Yoshida Tōyō down.
HK: I will complete the mission, my lord.
SB: Oh, well said! (starts to laugh hysterically)
R: (voice from outside) Kao!!
Guard: (from outside) Who’s that?!
Guard: What are you doing?!
R: Where are you, Kao?!
(Sounds of struggling can be heard.)
SB: What’s that racket?
(Shibata Bingo and his attendants go out to see. Kao, Takenchi and Shujiro remain frozen, listening to the voices.)
R: Where are you? Kao!!
(Outside, 3 men are trying to hold Ryoma back.)
R: Where are you? Kao!! Don’t go!! Don’t go, Kao!! Where are you? Kao!!
(A guard punches Ryoma in the face. He falls to the ground. Blood seeps from his mouth. Another kicks him in the stomach. The 3 guards try to hold him down, but he pushes them off. Ryoma looks frantic.)
R: Kao!! Where are you!! (Kao is in pain) Kao!! Kao!! Don’t go! Don’t go Kao!! (They push him out of the yard.) Let go! Let go of me! Damn! Dammit!!
(Takechi cannot bear with it and goes out to stop him. Ryoma has been thrown out in the sidestreet. A guard hits him with a stick. He goes down again.)
Guard: This is no place for you to coma and go as you like! Go away!
(Ryoma holds on to the stick and throws the man off. He screams madly and prepares to unsheathe his sword.)
TH: Hold your sword! Ryoma! Don’t do anything stupid! (Takechi runs out and grabs his shoulders.) Kao made the decision herself! She made the decision herself!
(Kao is crying inside.)
R: Takechi-san! Takechi-san?!
TH: To save Shujiro from having to commit harakiri, she chose to go to Kyo herself!
R: (shakes his head in disbelief) Kao…..Kao, she…..chose ……? She chose to go….? (collapses crying) She chose to go….. (on the ground) She chose ……KAO!!!!!
(At night. It is snowing. Ryoma sits on the porch at home. He gets up and unsheathes his sword. Frustrated, he looks hopelessly at the sky.)
SO: Were you thinking of taking Kao-chan back by force? We’re all very disturbed by this too. But….if it was her own decision, there’s nothing we can do.
R: (in pain) …..I…..I don’t know what I should do!!
SO: Kao-chan just sent someone over. (holds out a letter. Ryoma reads it immediately and runs out.)
(At the shrine, Kao waits for Ryoma.)
R: (runs in breathless) Kao! (starts to cry) Kao! I…..I told you, I won’t be leaving again! Whatever happens, we ….we promised we wouldn’t part anymore!
HK: Even without me by your side, Ryoma-san will be fine.
R: Stop it!!
HK: Please live on for my sake!
R: What are you saying?!!
HK: Have the life that I will never have! Omaesan (my dear husband), there are more….more important things for you than me! Unimaginable, great aspirations….. Please go and fulfill them! You can do it! I….I know you can!
(They embrace, Kao crying in his arms.)
HK: Goodbye, Ryoma-san. Goodbye!
