(The Sakamoto family have their morning meal. Otome has come home after a dispute with her husband.)
SO: They have too many rules, I can’t stand it! How you should wash the clothes, how you should drink your soup even!
SI: Every family has their own way of doing things.
SG: Once you’re married, you’ll need to listen to your mother-in-law.
SO: Yes, but it’s a bit too much!
SC: Doesn’t your husband speak out for you?
SO: He doesn’t have the guts…….besides I’ve never seen anyone so stingy!
SO: He even eats the clam shells, he says it’s too much of a waste not to!
SC: What, he just crunches them up?!
SO: That’s why his front teeth are all gone!
SI: No more?!
SO: I married into such a strange peculiar place! (Everyone laughs except Ryoma.) What’s so funny?!!
SG: Sorry, sorry! But that was hilarious! (They laugh again.) Right, Ryoma?
R: (spaced out and expressionless) …..Oh…..yep.
SG: See? (Ryoma pretends to laugh along. Otome looks at Ryoma, glad he is OK.)
(At the beach, Ryoma thinks about the parting scene with Kao.)
R: Whatever happens, we ….we promised we wouldn’t part anymore!
(Ryoma strikes with a bokuto / wooden sword)
HK: (crying) I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Even without me by your side, Ryoma-san will be fine.
(Ryoma calls out as he strikes.)
Episode 11 : Tosa Futtou (土佐沸騰< Tosa in Turmoil)
<Tosa, Iwasaki Home>
(Saki reads out a letter from Yataro, who should be in Nagasaki. Yataro’s parents, Yajiro and Miwa, and his younger brother Yanosuke are all there.)
Saki: ”How is everyone at home? I’m working hard here in Nagasaki. On behalf of our Lordship, I meet with foreign traders and negotiate with them on trading matters.”
IY: Read that last part again.
IM: How many times do you want to listen to it?
IY: What is it to you? Read on, Saki!
Saki: On behalf of our Lordship……
IY: Yataro is our Lordship’s representative!
Saki: I meet with foreign traders……
IY: He’s on equal terms with the foreigners!
Saki: And negotiate with them on trading matters……
IY: What do you think he’s trading in, Yanosuke? He’s smart, that one!
IM: See how pleased you are!
IY: Saki, read it from the beginning….
(Yataro stands at the door. Clothes filthy and tattered. A desperate look on his face.)
IM: Yataro! What are you doing here?
IY: Aren’t you in Nagasaki….??
Y: The geishas at Maruyama* are so beautiful and enticing. They make me so happy, so happy…..
IY: What are you on about?
Y: I used up all the clan’s money in Nagasaki. When I noticed ……….I’d spent 100 ryo already.
All: 100 RYO?!!
Y: (starts to cry) I’ve been discharged of my responsibilities!!
Y: (narration) Without doubt, I had been a real fool.
IY: You idiot!!
<Edo castle, outside the Sakurada Gate>
Y: (narration) But at the same time, my own ‘tragedy’ was quickly brushed off by a major incident in Edo. The Bakufu Tairō Ii Nosuke, yes, the one who forcibly opened up the country and purged one by one, all who opposed him. That Ii Naosuke, was attacked and assassinated. *
<Shinagawa, Tosa Daimyo residence>
Y: (narration) Previously sentenced to confinement at home by Ii Naosuke, the original Tosa daimyo Yamauchi Yōdō was overjoyed to hear the news as well.
YY: Open the door! My days of confinement are over! Open up every door! (He laughs hysterically in the snow.)
(At the Tachechi residence, Tomi is crying.)
Y: (narration) When Takechi Hanpeita received the news of Ii Tairō’s assassination, his grandmother who had lived with him all these years, had also just passed away.
(Takechi addresses his students.)
TH: It only took 18 unnamed ronin to give Ii Kamon-no-kami*…..Divine retribution! This is what happens when the Bakufu ignores the Emperor’s wishes and insists on opening the country!
(The students nod. Ryoma watches quietly from the yard. Takechi picks up his sword.)
TH: We are sword-bearers just like the Mito ronin! We can also turn the world upside down!
All: Yes sir!
TH: We need not fear the Joshi anymore! We will use our power as Kashi to make Tosa the flagship of Joui!
(Ryoma looks at Takechi incredulously.)
TH: Start the practice!
All: Yes sir!
Misc: In position, commence!
(After the students have left, Takechi practices on his own while Ryoma looks at the student names.)
R: (unsmiling) Your numbers have increased again. That’s incredible.
TH: What have you been doing all this time?*
R: Looking at the sea every day.
TH: Do you still hate me because of Kao?
R: (pause) I ….see very clearly now how naïve I was back then. I used to think whatever happens around me, I could still live my life in my own way….. But as expected, it’s impossible for a person to live in isolation.
TH: You’re right there.
R: Since that’s the case, I might as well give myself to the world.
TH: Ryoma, does that mean you agree to what I said? Are you willing to fight with me?
R: Takechi-san….Takechi-san, what was your purpose of bringing everyone together here?
TH: Do you still need to ask? To protect Japan from invasion by foreign countries, of course!
R: Well, it’s a hard enough task to prevent foreign invasion.
TH: That’s right. We must make the Tosa clan stand united on Joui. For that purpose, we must first bring Yoshida Tōyō down. As the person in charge of the clan’s administration, now, in the face of Japan’s crisis, Tōyō knows nothing at all!
R: In other words, what Takechi-san wants to do now, is to force Yoshida-sama to resign, right?
R: Then was it necessary to incite the men like that?!
R: You said it just now, Takechi-san: “We are sword-bearers just like the Mito ronin! We need not fear the Joshi anymore.”
TH: What do you mean?
R: Since you put it that way, they’re really going to believe you! And if one of them goes to make trouble with the Joshi, what are we going to do?!
TH: So what you meant by “giving yourself to the world” was to tell me off, I see.
R: My apologies. (He walks out.)
TH: Ryoma! You’ve…changed…
R: Like I said, I simply discovered how naïve I was……….That’s all.
Y: (narration) But then, something did happen…..
(Kashi Ikeda Toranoshin and Takeyama Kotarō practice on wooden swords in the yard of a house.)
IT: Takechi-sensei is Tosa’s pride.
IT: Takechi-sensei should be assisting his Lordship in the clan’s administration.
TK: That’s why we’ll always stand by Sensei, Toranoshin.
IT: That’s right, Kotarō!
IT: Eh? (Uga Kikuma runs up, panic-stricken.)
TK: Oh, it’s Kikuma.
IT: Uh? What’s up, why are you so flustered?
UK: (crying) Your little brother…..your brother….
IT: What’s wrong with Chujirō? Hey!! Tell me what’s wrong with Chujirō!!
(Ikeda Chujirō lies on the ground eyes closed, gasping for air. 2 Joshi laugh, one of them keeps pushing him with his feet.)
Joshi 1: Oi! Oi! (laugh) Oi!
IT: Chujirō!! (Runs over to find a long bloody cut on Chujirō’s back) Chujirō…. Chujirō…….?
(Chujirō cannot answer. The Joshi laugh. In one strike, Ikeda Toranoshin unsheathes his katana and cuts down a Joshi.)
Joshi 2: What! A mere kashi dares….. (Toranoshin goes after the second Joshi and brutally kills him too.)
Misc: Stop it! (Toranoshin is being pulled away.)
IT: Let go!
(Takechi Hanpeita is having a meeting, when a Kashi rushes into his room.)
Kashi: Sensei!! Takechi sensei!! Toranoshin just…..Toranoshin just attacked and killed some Joshi!
TH: (stunned, small voice) What……
(Night. Kashi Mochizuki Seihei rushes to scene of the killing. It is surrounded with people. Yataro is among them. Mochizuki finds Shimamura Ekichi there.)
MS: (to the people on the street) Excuse me! Excuse me! Ekichi!
SE: Seihei, I think Toranoshin just killed 2 people! (The Joshi bodies are being covered up as they speak.)
MS: (in a low voice) Toranoshin’s little brother Chujirō was cut down by the drunk Joshi.
SE: Is that why Toranoshin….?
MS: (covers Ekichi’s mouth) He rushed over the moment he heard the news and killed the 2 people there.
(Yataro is eavesdropping on the whole conversation.)
SE: Where’s Toranoshi? Where is he?
MS: Come with me! (To the crowd) Excuse me!
(Yoshida Tōyō and Gotō Shōjirō are discussing clan matters when they are interrupted.)
Misc: My Lord, a Kashi has killed some Joshi!
Misc: The victims are Yamada Hiroe and Masunaga Hansai from the Koshōkumi*.
Misc: The Joshi are furious, and have gathered in Yamada Hiroe’s house now.
<Yamada Hiroe’s residence>
Joshi: A Kashi killing the Joshi, it’s never been heard of!
All: Hear! Hear!
Joshi: Drag him out! Execute him publicly!
(Back to Yoshida Tōyō and Gotō Shōjirō…)
GS: Have you arrested Ikeda Toranoshin yet?
Misc: The Kashi refuse to hand him over!
GS: Refuse to?
Misc: Dozens of Kashi have gathered at the Takechi dojo, they’re protecting Ikeda there!
(The Kashi at Takechi dojo are excited and calling for war. Only Okada Izo alone looks very distrubed. Ikeda Toranoshin sits expressionless in front of his dead brother’s body.)
All: War! War!
TH: (rushes in) People, what are you doing?! Wait! Wait! Wait!! Calm down! Calm down! You don’t really want to go to war with the Joshi?!! Don’t even think about it!
HS: Takechi-sensei is right! You must all calm down!
Misc: What do you mean, Sensei?!
OI: Toranoshin’s little brother was murdered for nothing! It’s the Joshi’s fault!!
All: That’s right!
Misc: The day has come for us to avenge ourselves with the Joshi! Today’s the day at last!
TH: Listen! Do you want to be branded as traitors?!
OI: Sensei was the one who said we need not fear the Joshi anymore!
Misc: ”We are sword-bearers just like the ronin of Mito.” This is the moment we’ve been waiting for!
All: YES!! YES!!
(Takechi is speechless. He doesn’t know what to do.)
OI: Please let us fight, Sensei! Please!
(Ryoma stands at the door. Everyone stops and looks at him.)
Misc: Ryoma! How come?
Misc: Ryoma! Have you come to help us?
(Takechi and Hirai Shujiro look at each other. One of the Kashi has his hand on Ryoma’s shoulder and is hugging him.)
OI: With you here, we’ll be invincible!!
All: (cheering) YES!!
(Ryoma keeps his eyes on Takechi. He takes the Kashi’s hand off and moves through the crowd, stopping in front of Takechi. Everyone falls silent, waiting for him to speak. Takechi frowns, not sure what he will do. Ryoma suddenly smiles and nods reassuringly. He turns around and addresses the crowd.)
R: (loud) Just as Takechi-san said (lowers his voice) if we strike our swords without reason, people will only say “Kashi are Kashi (lower class), just a bunch of rogues and nothing else.”
(Shock runs through the Kashi.)
OI: Are you here to stop us?!!
Misc: (grabs Ryoma by his collar) If you don’t mean to fight, then get out of here!
All: Yeah! Get out!
R: (glares at the Kashi, takes his hand off) If you insist on going, then you better write your letters of separation to Takechi-san first. (The Kashi are stunned) Blatantly disobeying your master’s orders, means you don’t want to be his disciple anymore. Isn’t that so?
OI: Then….Then what should we do with this fury in our hearts?!
Misc: We can’t give in to the Joshi and hand Toranoshin over, can we? Sensei?
TH: How can we give in to that?! I’ll make them understand it was those Joshi who started it! (Proceeds to push his way out)
Misc: Sensei! Sensei!
R: Takechi-san! (Takechi stops) It’s very dangerous for you to go over there just like that. Let me check it out first (disarms his own swords) They’re furious beyond reason already. If they see Takechi-san there on your own, they’d kill you even before you get a chance to speak. Hey, Izo! (hands over his swords) Look after these for me. (Izo is shocked) Take them.
OI: Ryoma….(Ryoma smiles in assurance. He walks out, bows lightly to the people, then leaves.)
(At Joshi Yamada Hiroe’s residence…..)
Joshi: I’m going to let them know what will happen when they go against the Joshi!
All: That’s right!
GS: Silence! Silence! Yoshida Tōyō-sama has arrived.
ALL: (kneel) Yoshida-sama! Yoshida-sama!
YT: You must all calm down! Hear me?! The Kashi are prepared to throw their lives away! If you attack rashly, you’ll end up killing each other! How many people have they amassed?
Y: Reporting, my Lord! (Yataro enters the yard on his knees) About 50 people!
Y: The Kashi are well-armed, their morale is high and they have sworn to pay back on their years of grievances and anger.
GS: Why are you, a Kashi, telling us all of this?
Y: Without my Lords Joshi, we Kashi would be nothing (moves closer and closer to the house) Those people have forgotten this and turn against you. What an ungrateful bunch of……
GS: (kicks Yataro in the face) You embezzled 100 ryo of the clan’s funds in Nagasaki and you dare talk!!
Y: I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’ve let Yoshida Tōyō-sama down, I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry! But…But that 100 ryo was an investment I made with the future of the clan in mind, on drinks and entertainment for those foreign traders in Nagasaki. It was definitely not for myself!!
GS: (starts to beat him again) How dare you!
YT: Wait! So that means the money you’ve wasted will be repaid in multiples to the clan in future? Is that what you’re saying?!
Y: Yes, that’s exactly what I mean!
YT: (pause) Fine, I believe you.
YT: I’m appointing you as Gōmawari (village inspector)
YT: I want you to spy on the Kashi and report back to me
Y: Thank you my Lord! Thank you my Lord!
Misc: The Kashi has come! The Kashi has come! The Kashi has forced the way in!
YT: How many?!
Misc: Just one man, my Lord!
(Gotō Shōjirō goes to the outer yard, followed by the other Joshi. They find Ryoma unarmed and looking calmly around him. He is surrounded by several Joshi who have all drawn their swords. Yataro hides among the crowd.)
Misc: Oi! Stand down! Stand down……
R: I come as an ambassador. My name is Sakamoto Ryoma. Is there anyone here who can hear me out first?
Misc: Get down right there! Get down!
R: (remains standing, cheerfully) I’m not armed at all! (laugh) Is there anyone who can hear me out?
(Yoshida Tōyō walks into the room directly open to the yard. Ryoma sees and recognizes him.)
GS: I am the attendant Metsuke* Gotō Shōjirō. You can talk to me.
R: Thank you! Takechi would like to have a talk. Could you put your swords away for that?
GS: A Kashi wants to talk to us?! Who does he think he is?!!
R: (his expression turns hard) If this goes on!! Tosa will be split into two, each trying to kill the other! If we let that happen, and the authorities* decide to act on it, we could lose the entire domain!! Will that be alright too?!! (lowers his voice) Can I ask you to have a talk with him?
(Yoshida Tōyō walks out to the yard and stands right in front of Ryoma. Ryoma gets on his knees, head bowed to the ground.)
YT: Put your swords away, people. (They don’t respond) Do you hear me?!!
GS: Put them away.
(The Joshi sheathe their weapons and kneel in front of Tōyō, just like Ryoma. Tōyō crouches down to Ryoma’s level.)
YT: This face looks familiar.
R: Yes, my Lord. We met before at Yoshida-sama’s residence.
YT: Ah! I see, the man who came with Iwasaki!
R: Yes my Lord.
YT: (Ryoma still has his head down) Shojiro.
GS: Yes sir.
YT: You go talk to Takechi.
GS: (Pause) Yes sir!
R: Thank you my Lord! I will advise your intentions to Takechi at once.
Y: (narration) It was unbelievable.
R: (stands up, big smile) Thank you my Lord! Please excuse me. (He laughs as he leaves.)
Y: (narration) When did Ryoma turn into such a gutsy man? After that, Takechi Hanpeita had a meeting with Gotō Shōjirō.
GS: In any case, the Joshi and Kashi will put our swords down and make peace this time. But, Ikeda Toranoshin must commit harakiri. That shouldn’t be a problem then, Takechi (he walks away)
Y: (narration) In the end, Takechi didn’t put up a fight at all. And this episode came to an end with Toranoshin’s harakiri.
(The Kashi mourn Toranoshin at Takechi dojo.)
TH: Toranoshin….Toranoshin committed harakiri honourably! That is the dream of a samurai! You should all be glad for him! (They still cry.)
(At the Sakamoto residence, Harui practises on the shamisen, while Ryoma watches his neice.)
SH: (singing) “The branches of the winter plum are clothed in spring….”
R: Not bad.
SH: I practiced for a long time.
R: (sits down with her) How old are you Harui?
R: 18…….You’re old enough to get married.
SH: I don’t want to get married yet.
R: (wry laugh) But then, in this world, things don’t always go the way we want.
SH: Father told me, Toranoshin-san’s seppuku was unavoidable. Since he’d killed someone, he’d never be able to get away with it in the end.
R: You really have grown up! (He gets up and walks to the porch) But I don’t find it a privilege to have to commit harakiri at all. There’s nothing left after you die. Why must it always end….like this?! (to Harui) Can I borrow this?
R: (takes the shamisen and proceeds to play)
“Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! My heart is dead, only my empty shell remains, oh!
Like the cicada’s molted case left here, heave ho….
Oh! The molted case left right here, heave ho….
(Takechi Hanpeita stands at the front door of the Sakamoto residence, listening to Ryoma sing)
R: “Even pines can grow on rocks, heave ho, oh oh…..
Yet we cannot be together despite our love, heave ho…”
(Later Ryoma serves tea to Takechi in his room.)
TH: Toranishin’s death was my fault. You were right. I incited them.
R: I’m sorry, the tea is too diluted.
TH: Although this time Gotō Shōjirō had said it would end with Toranoshin’s seppuku, I’m sure Yoshida Tōyō wouldn’t let us off so easily. (Ryoma looks tired of this talk) They’re probably planning on how to destroy us now. That’s why we have to act first. We must unite all of Tosa’s Kashi to become a power ourselves. If we can do that, it won’t be so easy for Tōyō to attack us (leans forward) You’re one of us too, Ryoma. You went all alone into the Joshi’s camp. Everyone’s looking up to you now. They’re all counting on you!
R: Takechi-san (takes Takechi’s hand off his knee) Takechi-san says you want to protect Japan. Yet all you do is fight with Yoshida-sama. Tosa doesn’t have the time for internal strife anymore.
TH: What’s the use if we’re the only ones calling for Joui?! The only way for us to have the power is to unite the entire clan onto Joui.
R: Then go talk it over. Let Yoshida-sama understand Takechi-san’s way of thinking.
TH: You’re too naïve, Ryoma. That man is not like that. You’ll see it eventually. Without conflict, there is no way the world will change! (He strides off)
(Later, Ryoma sits by himself in a deserted yard, restless and unhappy. He sees Yataro walking over.)
R: Yataro! What are you doing?
Y: Can’t I come here?
R: (smile) You can.
Y: I tell you, I’ve just accomplished a big job in Nagasaki. And now I’m Yoshida-sama’s trusted aide. I’m like half a Joshi now! And I’ll tell you a bit more. Although there are rumours of Yataro embezzling clan funds over there, there’re all lies, don’t you believe them!
R: (losing his patience) Why are you here?
Y: I came to look for you.
(Ryoma has been brought in to see Yoshida Tōyō. He kneels, head bowed low.)
GS: Raise your head. (Ryoma sits up.)
YT: Your name is Sakamoto Ryoma, is it not?
R: Yes, my Lord.
YT: You came all alone into the Joshi camp. That was a very brave thing to do. When we’d met before, all I saw was a seedy-looking man. I couldn’t have been mistaken. You’ve changed. What happened to you?
R: Nothing happened, my Lord.
YT: I can see it, you had to forsake something important.
R: (immediately thinks of Kao) If there was a change, it was my accreditation with the Hokushin Ittō-Ryū Mokuroku, that’s all.
YT: (laughs loudly, then sits in front of Ryoma, on the same level. Gotō Shōjirō is shocked to see that.) I find it hard to believe there’s a man like you amongst the Kashi. (Pause) Sakamoto, tomorrow you report to duty in the castle.
YT: I’m appointing you into the new Koshōkumi* (he gets up)
YT: (to Gotō) You, be quiet.
Y: (in the yard) Why…..
YT: (to Ryoma) In other words, I’m promoting you to Joshi.
R: (pause) Please…….wait. I am very grateful for your kindness, my lord. But please permit me to think this over before I reply.
YT: There is nothing you need to consider.
R: (heaves a sigh and starts to laugh) This is too unexpected ….my mind is all blank!
(Yoshida Tōyō smiles. Ryoma heaves another sigh and turns dead serious.)
(Back at home, Ryoma stands in the moonlight. He practices with his wooden sword again.)
SO: Where have you been? The bath water’s gone cold.
R: Sis! What are you doing here?
SO: Well, this is my home. What’s wrong with my coming home by myself?
R: Did you have an argument with your husband again? Or is it your mother-in-law this t……
SO: It’s none of your business. Come quick, I’ve heated the water already.
R: Sis! Is there a place for you in the Okanōe family?
SO: What do you mean?
R: (pause) I…feel like I’m suffocating. This is Tosa, I was born and grew up in this place. But somehow I’ve begun to feel there’s no place for me here anymore.
SO: What happened…..?
R: (pretends to laugh) Oh don’t listen to what I said! It’s just a feeling I have.
SO: (smile) You’ve seen the world in Edo. That pain from losing Kao-chan was a major factor too. But, all these experiences have given you strength in character!
R: (smiles) Sis, you really know how to console people!
SO: Of course! I’m always on your side! You’re more important than my husband even!
R: (laugh) What are you saying?! (They both laugh)
SO: Alright now, go take a bath quick. I’ll get your clean clothes, go on!
R: (grin) OK!
Man: Excuse me!
(Ryoma goes to check who’s at the door.)
Man: Are you Sakamoto Ryoma?
R: Who’re you?
(Three men bring Ryoma to a house. There are many shoes out by the porch. Ryoma goes in to find all of Takechi’s students and many more inside.)
Misc: Sakamoto-san! Ryoma!
(Takechi’s students stand up to greet Ryoma. Takechi sits at the front of the hall flanked on both sides by Hirai Shujiro and Mochizuki Seihei.)
TH: Ryoma, the Kashi who agree with me, have gathered here from all parts of Tosa.
(The rest of the Kashi stand up too.)
TH: Joui is what the Emperor in Kyo(to) wishes. In other words, Joui means we’re working for the Emperor (gets up) That’s why we are now called the Tosa Kinnoto (Tosa Loyalist Party)!
(Yoshida Tōyō and Gotō Shōjirō rush out to meet Yataro.)
YT: The Kashi have gathered together again?!
Y: There are more than 100 people this time!
YT: (gets down close to Yataro) What about Sakamoto?!
Y: (bows low in fear)
YT: (grabs Yataro by the collar) Is Sakamoto Ryoma one of them?!
Y: ……Yes, my Lord! (Tōyō throws Yataro down in anger.)
(Back at the Tosa Kinnoto)
MS: Yes sir! (He opens a scroll)
TH: (walks over to Ryoma and brings him to the front, facing the scroll) Our comrades in Edo have joined us. The first person in Tosa to add his blood print….Ryoma, that’ll be you!
R: (looks at Takechi)
OI: Ryoma, come and join us!
Misc: We need your strength, Sakamoto-san!
TH: (grabs Ryoma by the shoulders) We can’t do without you!
(The entire room kneels down. Ryoma looks around, at all the expectant faces. He has to make a decision.)

*3. Kamon-no-kami is a court title, meaning Surveyor of housekeeping (掃部頭) - more info here
*4. A subtle fact in this episode -
Ryoma asked Kao to marry him in 1858. Kao physically left for Kyoto in 1859. So the break-up must have been sometime in between. Ii Naosuke was assassinated in March 1860 and this prompted Ryoma to talk to Takechi again. From the time-line, it appears Ryoma had isolated himself for months, even a year, after he lost Kao.
*5. The Koshōkumi (小姓組) is a military group under the Tokugawa Bakufu in charge of patrol and policing work during the Edo period.
