(Quick review of Episode 11)
Ryoma alone unarmed at the Joshi camp.
R: If this goes on!! Tosa will be split into two, each trying to kill the other !
TH: (voiceover) You went all alone into the Joshi’s camp. Everyone’s looking up to you now. They’re all counting on you!
Ryoma summoned by Yoshida Tōyō who wants Ryoma to work for him.
YT: Sakamoto, tomorrow you report to duty in the castle.
YT: I’m appointing you into the new Koshōkumi*
Ryoma brought to the Tosa Kinnōto (Tosa Loyalist Party) meeting and being pressured to join them.
Misc: Sakamoto-san! Ryoma!
TH: We are now called the Tosa Kinnōto (Tosa Loyalist Party)!
TH: The first person in Tosa to add his blood print……Ryoma, that’ll be you!
R: (looks at Takechi)
OI: Ryoma, come and join us!
Misc: We need your strength, Sakamoto-san!
TH: (grabs Ryoma by the shoulders) We can’t do without you!
The entire room kneels down. Ryoma looks around, at all the expectant faces. He has to make a decision.
(Continued this week )
(After a long pause, Ryoma finally sits in front of the list and adds his name and thumbprint in blood to it.)
Misc: Ryoma!! Sakamoto-san!
TH: You’ve finally decided! Ryoma, you’ve finally made up your mind!
(Ryoma nods. They look at each other.)
Episode 12 : Ansatsu Shirei (暗殺指令 The Assassination Orders)
(Hirai Shujiro adds his name and blood print after Ryoma.)
Y: In the end, the number of people who joined Takechi Hanpeita’s Tosa Kinnōto came to a staggering 200 and more. Although just a gathering of Kashi, together they formed a strong power within Tosa.
(Takechi addresses the Kinnōto members.)
TH: The Kinnōto is loyal only to the Emperor in Kyo(to). We exist to serve the wishes of the Emperor. In other words, our mission is “Sonnō Jōi”*! We rever the Emperor and carry out his word. We protect Japan from the evil clutches of foreign countries!!
All: Yes sir!
HS: Let’s do it!
Misc: This is great!
(Everyone jumps up and cheers. Except Ryoma. He slowly gets up and looks around the room, expressionless. Takechi watches Ryoma from afar.
A few days later, Ryoma, Hirai Shujiro and Okada Izo share a drink at a teahouse.)
OI: I tell you, a funny thing happened today, Ryoma! Shujiro-san and I were walking along…
OI: When we met some Joshi.
OI: Usually, they’d put on their high and mighty airs, and tell us to “Bow your heads, stand aside”. Well, they didn’t say a single thing today!
HS: We just held our heads high and walked past them. The Tosa Kinnōto has become a presence that even the Joshi fear! (he laughs)
OI: This really feels so good!
HS: Ryoma, although we had a few words on that incident with Kao, I’ve put that behind me now. You’re already one of us!
R: (nods, pretending to smile)
OI: Ryoma has always been such a great person. I love you! (gives Ryoma a bear hug, spilling Ryoma’s sake)
R: Izo! You’re drunk! Look at that! You’ve spilled sake all over me!
OI: Sorry! Sorry!
(Another Kashi Sawamura Sōnojō suddenly sits down at their table and takes Izo’s cup.)
SS: I’ll have a drink too.
OI: Who’re you?
SS: Don’t you recognize my face? I’m also in the Tosa Kinnōto. My name is Sawamura Sōnojō
SS: (to Ryoma) First of all, cheers.
R: Oh…I’m Sakamoto Ryoma! (raises his own cup)
SS: I know.
HS: You’re an impudent newcomer!
OI: Give me back my cup! (Sanamura refuses)
SS: Sakamoto, you seem different from the others.
SS: You look too calm for all of this.
R: (taken aback, looks at the other two, then tries to fudge his way out) What do you mean by that?!
SS: Do you ……. really agree with what Takechi Hanpeita has been preaching?
OI: (to Sawamura) Why do you say that?
SS: I’m terribly disappointed in Takechi!
(Izo tries to beat up Sawamura Sōnojō but Ryoma holds him down.)
R: Ah Izo! Wait! Stop!
HS: Explain yourself!
SS: Bringing us together and coming up with the “Sonnō Jōi” slogan is great. But how many days has it been since then?! Takechi hasn’t done anything else!
HS: So are you complaining about Takechi-sensei?!!
OI: And he called him just by the name!
SS: Since we’ve set our hearts on Joui*, we should go to Nagasaki now and kill off all the foreigners one by one! Look at the Chōshū domain! With Kusaka at the core, they’re carrying out Joui to the very end!
SS: Kusaka Gensui, top student of Yoshida Shōin.
R: Shōin-sensei? (thinks about the scene with Sensei at the beach) Ah, Sōnojō…That Kusaka Gensui you mentioned just now is….
SS: The leader of the Chōshū Joui faction. They say he’s just a youngster too. Compared to him, what has Takechi done!
HS: Shut up! Takechi-sensei is planning to get the support of the entire clan
HS: He’s already written to ask our daimyo Yamauchi Yōdō-kou to reform the Bakufu and show his support for the Emperor!
SS: Reform the Bakufu?
R: (in his own thoughts) Kusaka…… Gensui
HS: To stop the opening of the country and implement Joui instead!
Y: (narration) At the same time, Takechi Hanpeita had been writing his requests for Joui to be carried out in Tosa. But however long he waited, there was no reply from the Castle.
(Hata-gun magistrate Gōtō Shōjirō brings Takechi’s submission to the Tosa under-secretary Yoshida Tōyō.)
GS: Uncle, Takechi has sent in another missive again.
(Gōtō Shōjirō holds the scroll out but Yoshida Tōyō ignores it. Tōyō is looking at books with pictures of foreign steam ships instead.)
TH: (voiceover) It must be Yoshida Tōyō!
(Takechi and Ryoma return to Takechi dojo together.)
TH: He’s the one ignoring all my requests. He doesn’t have a clue what “Sonnō Jōi” means!
R: You can’t just assume that, Takechi-san! That’s how conflicts start.
TH: Ryoma, the reason you joined the Kinnōto was to keep me in check, wasn’t it? (Ryoma looks away and acknowledges with his silence.) It doesn’t matter anyway. You’re the only true friend I have. It’s good enough that you’re here. But, I hope you can see why I’m always going on about “Joui! Joui!” Protecting one’s own country from foreign invasion, that’s only natural!
R: ….Actually, I was hoping Takechi-san could help me here. I want to go to the Chōshū domain please.
R: I want to talk to a man called Kusaka Gensui.
R: Yes. I want to know what Joui really means too! I want to meet with Kusaka-san and ask him about it.
TH: (face lights up) Ryoma! You finally want to learn about it! I’ll write a reference letter for you. Go to Chōshū then!
(Ryoma sets out for Chōshū.)
Y: (narration) For Ryoma, other than his kenjutsu training trips, this was his first time abroad. And trips like this will be repeated again and again during the course of Ryoma’s life. That’s right, tirelessly travelling to meet the people he wants to see. This was the beginning of his future way of life.
(At the same time, Yataro is getting married…..)
Y: (narration) And I was facing a major turning point in my life too.
(Yataro looks happily at his wife Kisei. Friends celebrate at his home and his father Yajiro dances in celebration.)
IY: (laugh) I still can’t believe it! Yataro was able to find someone to marry him!
Misc: Your wife is lovely!
Y: I think so too!
IY: This fellow fell into the manure ditch and was stuck there, when who should pass by and save him but this lovely lady Kisei!
IM: Omaesan! (My dear!)
IY: At that moment….she fell in love with our Yataro right away!
Misc: I really cannot understand what Kisei-sama sees in Yataro!
IY: She likes the smell of manure on him and the way he stinks!
Y: Kisei likes my courage and stauchness. Even in the manure, I was calm and dignified like a real man! Right, Kitei?
IK: (smile) Yes….
IY: What a load of bull! You were too ashamed to call for help, that’s all!!
Y: That’s enough already! (pushes Yajiro off)
Misc: But anyhow, Yataro’s got to thank Yoshida Tōyō -sama for this!
IM: Yes it’s all because Yoshida-sama appointed him as Gōmawari (village inspector), that he’s now able to have a wife!
Y: It’s true. It’s true. Mother, look at these (shows off his clothes) This is the first time I dressed up! (Claps his hands like a child. Kisei looks at him and lowers her head) Ah….kawaii…kawaii….!! (Lovely)
(Morning. Yataro leaves the house to go on patrol.)
IK: Omaesan (she hands him his lunch)
Y: (narration) A Gōmawari in today’s terms, is something like a policeman. My job was to look out for wrongdoers and to arrest them.
IK: (helps Yataro fix his clothes, then smiles) Please be careful.
(Kisei bows and sees him off. Yataro is spellbound. He cannot take his eyes off his wife. Finally he walks off, glanced back, smiles, walks on, looks back again and realizes with a start, that his siblings and parents are also there, sniggering.)
IY: He’s been totally bewitched by Kisei.
IW: Yep! (They both laugh)
Y: Oh shut up!
Y: (narration) Ryoma reached Hagi* of the Chōshū domain on January 14 of the year Bunkyū 2 (1862)
< Chōshū, Hagi>
(Kusaka Genzui’s room has slogans stuck all over the walls and doors. Ryoma looks at them in amazement while Kusaka reads Takechi’s letter.)
R: ”Even as my body lies decaying on the Musashi plains…”
KG/R: “My Japanese spirit will always remain”
KG: This was Shōin-sensei’s death poem.
R: (shocked) Eh?
KG: Imprisoned by the Bakufu, Sensei was executed against his will (starts to cry) These were his words, just before he died…(starts to howl)
KG: (wailing) If it wasn’t for Shōin-sensei, there wouldn’t be me (boku)*.
KG: Losing such a great man is the Chōshū domain’s…No, it’s Japan’s loss! Shōin-sensei, he wanted to go to America to learn about the enemy! To protect Japan from invasion! I must take over Sensei’s task! (cry)
R: (pause) Well….. Kusaka-dono. To be frank, I don’t really understand what “Joui” means
R: I still don’t get! Please teach me, Kusaka-dono! (bows)
KG: Oh, I’m much younger than you…..
R: Age has nothing to do with it! What is “Joui” really? Please teach me! Please!!
KG: What a straightforward man! I understand. If you think I’m good enough, I’ll answer any question you have.
R: Thank you!
KG: Go ahead then!
R: OK……Is Japan really being invaded by foreign countries?
R: I just don’t get it…..America didn’t declare a war on us, they just started to trade with Japan. How did this turn into an invasion? (Kusaka Genzui grimaces) Oh, please don’t be angry!
KG: What a good question!
KG: You’re right, you cannot have “Joui” if you don’t understand this point! (Ryoma nods) Let me answer that. It’s true, America didn’t use the firepower of its cannons to set foot on Japan. But, without doubt, Japan has indeed been put under its control.
R: What do you mean by that?
KG: Do you know? Japan was forced to enter into an unfair trade agreement like this (uses a tray of teatime snacks to illustrate.) The Americans say that 1 Japanese koban (gold coin) is the same value as 5 silver American coins.
KG: But, in reality, it should be triple this amount. It’s worth 15 silver coins.
KG: The Bakufu’s ignorance has allowed them to take advantage of us!
R: Then that means Japan’s wealth is slowly being usurped by America….
KG: We’re being sucked dry! Prices in Japan will inflate. People’s lives will get increasingly harsh.
R: If this goes on, Japan will be penniless!
KG: That’s why we need “Joui”! We must expel those foreigners out of Japan at once!
R: But there are open country advocates like Yoshida Tōyō-sama in the Tosa administration….
KG: ”All people under one sovereign’s command” (Ikkun banmin)
R: ”….one sovereign…”?
KG: This was what Shōin-sensei said. We are all subjects of the Emperor in Kyo(to). Tokugawa as well. Like us, they are but vassals of the Emperor! Who do we implement “Joui” for? For Japan! For the Emperor!
R: (finally realizing) “Sonnō…..Jōi” ?
KG: But look at the mess they’ve made of Japan, the Bakufu is useless now!
KG: And the clans go without saying. If you really want to protect Japan, stand up for it even if you have to leave your clan! (dappan)
R: L…leave my clan?!
KG: (writes “dappan” on paper) That means to flee your domain. That means to cut off your liege (holds it up) That’s “dappan”! Sakamoto-san, what have you learnt from Shōin-sensei?! If you have the aspirations, then make it happen! Isn’t that what Shōin-sensei has always taught us?
KG: (emotional) Japan cannot wait any more!! Sakamoto-san! Stand up! Give it your all! Fight! (Kneels in front of Yoshida Shōin’s paintings and words, and starts to wail again) Ah! Shōin-sensei…!!
(Ryoma is stunned by Kusaka Genzui’s words.
At Takechi dojo, Okada Izo, Sawamura Sōnojō and other members of the Kinnōto are losing their patience.)
OI: How long do we have to wait, Sensei?!
HS: It’s soon now. Just a while longer!
Misc: A while, how long is a while?!
SS: The Satsuma clan has already started out for Kyo! Let’s go too!!
All: Yeah!! Yeah!! Takechi-sensei!!
(Everyone jumps up and rushes at Takechi. Hirai Shujiro pushes them back.)
TH: (sits calmly) Be quiet!Be quiet! (Silence) It’s no use if we went to fight all by ourselves! We can only implement Joui, if we had power over the entire domain!
(The members are disappointed, some cry out in frustration.)
Y: (narration) But then, Hanpeita had a miscalculation…..
<Shinagawa, Tosa Daimyo residence>
Y: (narration) True, the Tosa clan daimyo Yamauchi Yōdō-ko was ordered to confinement for disagreeing with the Bakufu’s open country policy. So, Hanpeita naturally assumed that Yōdō-ko was pro-Joui as well. But….
(At Shibata Bingo’s residence….)
SB: What have you been doing, Takechi?!
TH: Yes, my lord?
SB: You said you’re going to spread Joui all over the Tosa domain and bring Yoshida Tōyō down.
SB: Get me back into the castle quick!
TH: The Joui movement is very strong in the capital of Kyo now. No doubt this wave will surge to Tosa very soon. That means Tōyō won’t be able to hold on to his obstinacy for long!
SB: Is that true?
TH: This is the news we received from Hirai Kao in the Sanjō residence. There is no mistake!
<Kyoto, the Sanjō residence>
Staff: This is the incense burner. Here is face powder from Ise, and folding fans. And these are the boxwood combs that my ladies have ordered from Satsuma.
(Kao is very well dressed. She checks the items with the other ladies-in-waiting.)
HK: These are the ones!
Misc: That’s right!
HK: (to the staff) Thank you for your help. Are there any letters?
Staff: Yes there are. (He hands her a box)
HK: Thank you.
(The staff leaves. Kao brings the box of letters to her room while the other ladies pour over the new supplies. She sorts through the letters and finds one for herself from Takechi Hanpeita. Checking that no-one’s around, she reads it.)
TH: (voiceover) Kao, the news that you sent over about the situation in Kyo, was very useful. However, what I’m looking for is something that would serve to unsettle Yoshida Tōyō. Please try to find it, as soon as possible! And I have some good news for you. Ryoma’s spirit of Joui has finally awakened! He’s now in the Kinnōto and helping me to manage all the other members. Ryoma is also looking forward to seeing the outcome of your work. Please help us, Kao.
HK: Ryoma-san, he’s……
(Ryoma is on his way back to Tosa. He is troubled, and thinks about Kusaka Genzui’s words.)
KG: (voiceover) Sakamoto-san, what have you learnt from Shōin-sensei?! If you have the aspirations, then make it happen! Isn’t that what Shōin-sensei has always taught us?
(Ryoma thinks about Yoshida Shōin at the beach in Edo.)
YS: The Black Ships are right there! There is something I must do now. To board the Black Ship and go to America!
R: (to himself) Make it….happen……
(Back at Tosa, Gōtō Shōjirō brings another one of Takechi’s submissions to Yoshida Tōyō.)
GS: Uncle, Takechi has sent in a missive again!
YT: You don’t need to show me every single one! The Tosa Kinnōto will fall apart soon. As long as Takechi is not replaced, and Sakamoto does not stand up to lead them.
GS: Sakamoto… Why do you let Sakamoto do what he wants, Uncle?! You’ve already appointed him official duty in the castle, and yet he chose to side with Takechi.
YT: Sakamoto is not the type of man who would willingly bow his head to Takechi. Sooner or later, he will become my right-hand man.
(Gōtō Shōjirō is furious. He storms out and throws Takechi’s missives down in anger on the way. Yoshida Tōyō smiles serenely, eyes closed.
At Takechi dojo….)
HS: We can’t control them anymore, Sensei! Some people are threatening to leave the Kinnōto already! Whatever it is, Sensei, just do something please!
TH: (stops his meditation and opens his eyes)
(In the meantime, Ryoma has returned to Tosa, but he is still deep in thought. He sits on the beach, examining what he wants to do.
At the Yoshida residence, Gōtō Shōjirō and Yoshida Tōyō prepare to leave for the castle.)
GS: The Master is going into the Castle. Prepare the palanquin.
Servant: Yes, my Lord!
YT: No, I’ll walk. On a fine day like this, I don’t take the palanquin. You need to remember that, Shōjirō.
GS: I’m sorry.
Guard: (in a panic) Oh no! Somebody! Anybody! Outside!….outside…..!
(Gōtō Shōjirō and Yoshida Tōyō go out to see Takechi Hanpeita and some 30 Kinnōto members bowed low on the ground.)
Guard: What are you doing?!! What is this?!!
GS: What are you doing here?
TH: In the past few days, I have sent numerours missives to Yoshida-sama. But I have not heard anything in reply at all. Both the Emperor in Kyo and our Lordship Yamauchi Yōdō-ko are wishing for “Joui” to be carried out. Then why does Yoshida-sama still abide by the Bakufu’s open country policies?!
GS: Do you know what you just said was totally out of line?
TH: We are the Tosa Kinnōto! Every one of us is dedicated to “Sonnō Jōi”! We were prepared to give our lives as true samurai when we came together! Please……Please give me an answer! Yoshida-sama!
YT: (smirk) Takechi!! How would you know what the Emperor is thinking??
TH: The Emperor hates foreigners, that’s a known fact!
YT: But we’ve never heard the Emperor order a war against the foreigners. Yōdō-ko has not said anything about that either!
YT: After all! Because of their support in the Battle of Sekigahara, it was Tokugawa Ieyasu-ko who granted the Yamauchi family, ownership over these lands! Tokugawa-sama is his great benefactor. Do you think our Lordship will go against him?
TH: (realizing his mistake) But …..a wise ruler such as our Lordship would surely know that Japan is now facing its greatest crisis ever!
TH: Compared to past debts of gratitude….
TH: He should place more importance on the future…!
YT: So, are you giving an order to our Lordship now?
TH: I dare not!
YT: You talk of ungratefulness and disloyalty. Is that what a samurai should say?!!
TH: I’m very sorry!!
YT: Let’s go, Shōjirō!
GS: Yes, sir.
TH: (suddenly hangs on to Yoshida’s hakama/trousers) Please wait!
GS: Stand down!
TH: Please pass the message to our Lordship!
YT: (kicks Takechi off) Unhand me!! You disgust me, Takechi! Your vision is narrow and you jump to conclusions. Yet you’re convinced you’re always right…..Don’t ever let me see you again!! (He walks off)
TH: Please wait!
(Takechi tries to go after Yoshida but is stopped by Gōtō Shōjirō and his bodyguards. Shōjirō kicks Takechi many times in the head.)
GS: You lot in the Tosa Kinnōto had better disband as soon as possible!
(As he leaves, Shōjirō kicks another member in the chest. Takechi’s face is broken and bloodied. He lies on the ground, crying out in pain and humiliation. The Kinnōto members are shocked and rooted to the spot. )
GS: (catches up with Yoshida Tōyō) What a bunch of fools who don’t know their own place!
YT: Ah but, Sakamoto wasn’t there.
(Gōtō Shōjirō stops short. His jealousy is plain to see.
In the meantime, Yataro runs home, singing at the top of his voice.)
Y: ”I married a lovely girl~~Sore! Sore!”
Misc: Oh, look who’s in a great mood, Yataro!
Misc: Are you in such a hurry to see your wife?
Y: (keeps running without looking at them) Oh, oh! You can be jealous for all I care! Girls like Kisei are not for peasants like you lot!
Misc: (laugh) He’s gone mad!
(Yataro reaches home.)
Y: Kisei! It’s me!! I’m home, Kisei!!
R: Oh Yataro!! I’ve waited a long time for you!
Y: (He sees his entire family around Ryoma and his smile disappears immediately)
IM: Ryoma-san has us brought sake!
Saki:He says it’s a present for Brother and Sister-in-law!
R: And these buns…..They’re made by my friend Chōjirō! Come help yourselves!
IM: I will!
(Later, Ryoma drinks with Yataro and Kisei, while Yajiro and the 2 younger children sleep.)
IK: Have some more, Ryoma-san!
R: Oh~~thank you! (laugh) But you know…..I’d never thought you’d marry such a lovely wife~~Hey, I still down know how you got together.
Y: There’s nothing to tell!
Y: I met Kisei one day and then we got married! That’s all of it.
R: How can that be all!
Y: (laugh) It is! It is! Kisei, go and give Mother a hand.
IK: Sure (to Ryoma) Please make yourself at home.
R: (watching Kisei walk off) And she’s a great cook too. Oh, you’re a lucky fellow!
Y: (his smile fades) Ryoma….Actually, I’ve been waiting for you to visit all this time….
R: Oh, really? In fact, I’d gone to a place called Hagi in Chōshū.
Y: (in an exaggerated voice) Oh, you must be tired out then! (Pours out more sake) Come, come! Have more, have more! ……I see…..But I didn’t expect Ryoma would join the Kinnōto. When did you turn into a Joui supporter? Come! Come!
R: (sobers up) As I thought…. you’re mad at me, aren’t you?
Y: …….mad for what?
R: (sigh) It’s not easy to get assigned by Yoshida-sama into the Koshōkumi…..So I’ve put you in a difficult spot in between us.
Y: Oh, that’s no big deal! (pours more wine)
R: But, isn’t Yoshida-sama your benefactor?
Y: Well I must say, I’m really impressed Ryoma!
Y: You gave up the road to riches and stayed true to your own beliefs. You’re incredible! (pretends to laugh)
R: (getting drunk) To be honest, Yataro, I didn’t join the Kinnōto for the same reason as the rest of them.
Y: (not listening) Oh really? Really?
R: Thanks to this trip to Chōshū, I can see very clearly now.
Y: I say Ryoma…..
R: I’m a Japanese! I want to protect my country.
Y: Though it might be a bit unfair to you, but I have a favour to ask…..
R: I belong to Tosa but I belong even more so to Japan!
Y: If you don’t want your post in the Koshōkumi, can you give it to me?
R: I don’t want to be useful only to Tosa.
Y: Could you have a word with Yoshida-sama?
R: I don’t care about working in the castle!
Y: I understand that, so let me take your place……
R: There’s no place for me in the Kinnōto either!
Y: That’s your own business! Can you just recommend me to Yoshida-sama, OK?
R: Yataro! Yataro!
R: Haven’t you…..ever thought of leaving Tosa altogether?
R: Not to be bound anymore by this Joshi-Kashi nonsense. Don’t you want to live your life the way you want?
Y: I just got married to a wonderful wife. To have a successful career and to give my wife a good life, is the way of life I choose as a man!
Y: Oh, are you regretting now, your decision to choose the Kinnōto?
R: (shaking his head) That’s not it! That’s not it!
Y: It’s too late! It’s too late! The Kinnōto people went to Yoshida-sama’s residence this morning. Takechi himself got badly kicked in the head.
Y: You’ve lost all chances for a successful career now.(Ryoma is shocked) Ryoma, please! Put a word in with Yoshida-sama for me! Tell him to pass that vacancy in the Koshōkumi to me, Iwasaki Yataro!
R: Takechi-san was….
Y: Hey, are you listening? Are you listening?
R: Kicked in……
Y: Will you look at me?!! Look at me, Ryoma!
IY: (wakes up)Oh, I fell asleep…
Y: Don’t come over, go back to sleep, will you?
IY: How can I let you guys finish off such heavenly sake?
(Ryoma picks up his sword and runs out of the house.)
IY: What happened to the sake?
Y: (to Yajiro) Oh, shut up!
(At Takechi’s house, Tomi tries to tend to Takechi’s wounds. Takechi screams out in pain and anguish.)
TT: Omaesan! I’m changing the water, I’ll be back immediately!
TH: (black Takechi) Are you going to let it end like this? Takechi Hanpeita and Yoshida Tōyō will never agree. (Takechi stops screaming, his eyes open wide.) He will always be your enemy. If you let it end now, the flame of Joui will be put out too. The future of Tosa, the future of Japan, and you, will all come to an end.
TH: Stop it! Stop it!
TH: (black Takechi) You’ve let Shibata-sama down. Kao will hate you. Shujiro, Izo and the rest of them will look down on you.
TH: Stop it! (starts to cry) What should I do?
TH: (black Takechi) Don’t cry, Takechi. I have a good idea……(Takechi appears to be listening to black Takechi though nothing has been said. He opens his eyes wide.) I’m always on your side…..(they smile at each other).
(Ryoma runs through the streets and reaches Takechi’s residence)
R: Takechi-san! Tomi-san! It’s Ryoma!
R: How’s Takechi-san?
TT: He came home covered with blood.
TT: Saying things that make no sense, over and over again! What happened, Ryoma-san? (Ryoma runs in to the house)
(In the meantime, Yataro has the rest of the sake, fuming that Ryoma has left without agreeing to his request)
Y: Damn you, Ryoma! You cold heartless brute! (Someone arrives outside.) Who is it? At this time of the night…..
(Yataro goes out to find it is Gōtō Shōjirō. He kneels down immediately.)
Y: Ah! Gōtō-sama!
(Ryoma stands outside Takechi’s room.)
R: Takechi-san? Takechi-san? (He hears no sound) I’m coming in!
(He opens the door to find Takechi sitting up calmly on his futon. His face is bruised and swollen but he is at peace, no longer showing the anguish from before.)
TH: Oh, Ryoma.
R: (he knows something is not right) Takechi-san….
(Outside Yataro’s house…)
Y: What brings Gōtō-sama all the way out here on your own…?
GS: It’s about Sakamoto.
Y: (pause, then happily) Ryoma’s given me his place in the Koshōkumi? Thank you, my Lord! I, Iwasaki Yataro, will use my life to…..
GS: (laugh softly) I don’t want your life
GS: I want Sakamoto Ryoma’s life.
(At Takechi’s residence….)
