(At the Takechi residence. Ryoma has come to see Takechi after he was beaten up outside Yoshida Tōyō’s house.)
TH: (hysterical) Kill Yoshida Tōyō!! Ryoma!! Kill Tōyō for me!! (Ryoma is shocked.)
TT: Omaesan (my husband) Why…..Why do you say such dreadful things? (Tomi sinks to the ground. Takechi calms down somewhat at the sound of her voice.) Omaesan, you….My husband is a wise and dignified and gentle man! I beg you, please don’t speak of such terrifying words again!
TH: I was kicked in the head!
(Takechi recalls the scene at Yoshida Tōyō’s house that morning.)
TH: (holding on to Yoshida Tōyō) Please pass the message to our Lordship!
YT: (kicks Takechi off) Unhand me!! You disgust me, Takechi!
TH: As long as there is Yoshida Tōyō, the Tosa Kinnoto will not be able to do anything! (Tomi is crying) I must make them understand, that we are prepared to give our lives to carry out Joui!
R: I understand, Takechi-san! I will seek to meet with Yoshida-sama directly. And I will ascertain what his true thoughts are! Now if Yoshida-sama says anything wrong in front of me, I will kill him there and then.
Episode 13 : Saraba Tosa yo (さらば土佐よ Farewell, Tosa)
(Yataro goes on patrol. He is troubled. He takes out a small packet and recalls his conversation with Hata-kun Magistrate Gōtō Shōjiro.)
GS: Kill Sakamoto, Iwasaki!! Iwasaki !! (He grabs Yataro, then takes the packet out and opens it) Use this! Use this, Iwasaki! (sniggers) Pour this into his sake. Let him drink it! (The packet holds white powder)
GS: You don’t want to part with your newly-wed wife, do you?!!
(Back to Yataro on the streets…)
(Yataro puts the packet back and sees Ryoma at a road-side tea-stall. Deep in thought, Ryoma looks troubled too.)
Y: (whisper) R…Ryoma….
(After some deliberation, Yataro shakes the thoughts out of his head. But he cannot bring himself to smile as he talks to Ryoma.)
Y: Ryoma, why so absent-minded….?
R: Oh, Yataro!
Y: Ol’ man, give me a cup of tea! My throat is parched…..
R: Oh, are you on patrol?
R: What does it feel like to be a Gōmawari? (village inspector) Finding and arresting criminals, it’s not an easy job, is it?
Y: Idiot! There’s no job too difficult for me! (laugh)
R: (laugh) You’re the same old Yataro!
(Ryoma turns around. Yataro’s smile quickly fades.)
Vendor: (to the passersby) Come over and have a rest. We serve hot tea!
(Ryoma returns to his tea. Yataro looks at the cup.)
Vendor: Here’s your tea, sir! (Yataro enters the stall and sits down) Welcome, sir!
R: (puts his cup down) I’ve had too much tea, I’m going to the toilet. (Goes to the back of the stall) Toilet…toilet……
(Yataro stares at Ryoma’s cup, checks that no-one is looking, then with shaking hands, opens the pack and pours the powder in to the tea.)
Y: (to himself) Calm down…..calm down…..calm down…..(He hides the packet just in time)
R: There’s a child playing at the back.
Vendor: Oh, that’s my child.
R: (laugh) He’s very energetic!
Vendor: Thank you, sir!
R: (to Yataro) Oh sorry! Sorry! I was playing with a kid.
Y: I’ve got to go, I’ve got some business to look into.
R: Oh, see you then. (Yataro walks off quickly, head down) Hey Yataro! Have you been looking after Kisei-san?
R: You married such a lovely wife. Hurry up and have some children!
Y: What a meddling busybody you are!!
R: (grins) Oh….see you!
(Yataro walks off, then stops and looks back. He’s panting. Ryoma goes back to his tea. He takes a drink, and suddenly, fresh blood spurts from his mouth. He falls to the ground amidst screams.)
Vendor: Sir, how are you?!! What’s the matter, sir?!!
(Yataro hears the commotion from a distance. Many people are shouting. Ryoma struggles on the ground, clutching his chest.)
Misc: What’s wrong, Samurai-san?
(Yatoro covers up his ears to escape from the shouts and screams. Ryoma wriggles on the ground in great pain. He looks like he can’t breathe.)
Vendor: Sir, how are you?!! Sir! Sir, hold on!
(Yataro is in agony. He cries out as Ryoma struggles for his last breath. After a while, he finds the screams and shouts have disappeared. He uncovers his ears. The street is quiet.)
Vendor: Would you like me to change your tea to a hot one?
R: No thanks, this is fine.
(Yataro realizes it was his imagination. He rushes over as fast as he can.)
Y: Don’t drink it! (He pushes the cup out of Ryoma’s hand) Don’t drink it!! You mustn’t drink this tea!! Ryoma!!
R: What is it, Yataro? (Yataro is frantic. He cowers on the ground and cries out.) What is it, Yataro? Hey!
Y: Stay away from me!
R: Eh? What?
(Sunrise, the next morning. Ryoma is in bed, but he has been up all night thinking about the day before. After the incident, he had tried to get the truth out from Yataro.)
R: Yataro! What was that all about?! (catches up with him) Yataro!
Y: It was Gōtō Shōjiro-sama who ordered me to do it.
R: Gōtō Shōjiro?
Y: He’s Yoshida-sama’s nephew. That must mean, Yoshida-sama wants you dead!
(Ryoma turns over in bed. He doesn’t look convinced.)
Y: Listen, Ryoma! I wasn’t trying to help you! I’m just angry! In Tosa…… as expected, Kashi are no different from the bugs. As long as the Joshi wants it, we have to murder our own kind! (Starts to cry) Is there anything as ridiculous…..as pathetic as that!
(In bed, Ryoma tries to figure out who wants him dead and why.)
SH: Uncle Ryoma! (He pretends to sleep) It’s time to wake up!
R: Oh….is it morning already? (feigns a yawn)
SH: Hurry and get up!
(At the Sakamoto family breakfast…..)
SI: (to Chino) Just now, the Saidani House sent someone over. They asked us to go have a look at their new arrivals.
SC: Oh, do they have fabric? (Iyo nods)
SH: And nice hairpins? (Iyo nods again)
SG: (to Harui) Remember your manners when you talk
SI: (to Gonpei) They also have kimono sash for men
SC: (to Gonpei) Let’s go to Saidani House together today!
SH: Let’s go! Let’s go!
SC: There are advantages when the main family line runs a pawn shop.
SG: Will you come too, Ryoma?
R: I won’t be going, I have something else to do today.
(At the Tosa under-secretary Yoshida Tōyō’s residence, Gōtō Shōjiro tends to Tōyō’s clothes.)
YT: Where were you last night? The men I sent over said you weren’t at home.
GS: (hesitant) Last night……..I was with a woman. I’m sorry.
(Yoshida Tōyō looks at him. He knows Shōjiro is lying. A servant enters.)
Servant: Yoshida-sama, a Kashi has arrived, he claims to know my lord
YT: Who is it?
Servant: He says his name is Sakamoto Ryoma
(Gōtō Shōjiro gets nervous. Yoshida Tōyō walks straight out to the yard to talk to Ryoma, followed by Shōjiro. Ryoma is bowed low in greeting.)
YT: What is it?
R: I heard that Takechi Hanpeita was kicked in the head.
YT: So what about it?
R: The Kashi managed by Takechi are strong in enough to be a threat to the Joshi now. If this goes on, Tosa will have a civil war! (Yoshida Tōyō smiles.)
Misc: What did you say?!
GS: (rushes out and unsheathes his sword) How dare you, a mere Kashi!
YT: (to Shōjiro) Stop!
(Tōyō slowly walks down to Ryoma and sits on the stairs in front of him.)
YT: What are you trying to say?
R: Please grant Takechi Hanpeita an official post and call him into the castle!
GS: (still holding his sword) What?!
R: If Kashi are allowed to enter the administration, and given the opportunity to voice their opinions, I’m sure there’ll be no more conflict!
YT: (laughs) You’re truly one interesting man. Now, if I believe he is capable, I would push that Kashi steadily up. The reason Takechi was punished was because he is incompetent (he moves down one step closer to Ryoma) I value Tosa more than anyone else (he leans forward) Despite that…….you still want to kill me?!
(Ryoma stares at Tōyō.)
GS: You bastard! You came with the intent to kill?!!
(He lifts his sword to strike Ryoma)
YT: Shōjiro you stand aside (Tōyō pushes Shōjiro away. He walks down another step to Ryoma’s level) You people were born in Tosa (places his hand on Ryoma’s shoulder) You grew up in Tosa (He sits down on Ryoma’s level) Leave Takechi, come to me.
R: (looks long and hard at Yoshida Tōyō) Yoshida-sama is a remarkable man. However much you despise Takechi-san (glances at Shōjiro), you wouldn’t ask Yataro to poison him. (Tōyō looks at Shōjiro. He understands what Ryoma is saying.) I know you are not that type of person. (He stands up) However, I’m not like you. I cannot……. think solely of Tosa anymore (he bows low) I’m terribly sorry!
(Yoshida Tōyō gets up and leaves without a word. Shōjiro runs after him.)
GS: Uncle! Uncle!
(At the Iwasaki home, Yataro is worried.)
Yanosuke: Wow, look at all that food!
IY: It’s from your old man’s winnings, good things are finally happening!!
IM: It’s because of these occasional “good things” that your father can’t stop gambling.
IY: (chuckle) What’s the matter Yataro? Is this meal too overwhelming for you? (laugh)
Y: What would you do if I failed in a mission?
IY: What? Have you done anything wr…
Y: What would you do Kisei?
IK: I’m your wife. I’d follow you to the end of the world.
Y: End of the….Actually…
IM: Actually what?
Y: I disobeyed Gōtō-sama…. No, I disobeyed Yoshida-sama’s orders
Y: Yoshida Tōyō-sama! It was something that I had to do, but I couldn’t do it!
IM: What do you mean?
IY: Be more specific!
Y: Let’s run away, Kisei! Let’s all escape from Tosa!
IY: (motions to the food) Hey, my luck’s finally changed for the good…..
Y: I disobeyed Yoshida-sama! You think he’s going to let us off?!
IY: Well you’re the one who did it, you idiot!
Y: Enough! Kisei, let’s run, just the two of us (grabs her hand)
IK: I don’t want to!
IK: I don’t want to leave Tosa!
Y: Didn’t you say you’d follow me to the end of the world?
IK: (She slaps his hand off) I don’t want to!
IM: (to Yajiro) We better eat as much as we can today.
IY: (gobbles down his food) No-one knows what’s going to happen next.
Yanosuke: Yes sir!
(The door slides open. Two officials arrive.)
Official: Excuse me. Are you Iwasaki Yataro? I’m here to announce Yoshida Tōyō-sama’s orders.
Y: (frantic, kneels down to receive the orders) I’m terribly sorry! I’m terribly sorry!
Official: (to the family) Well, bow your heads!
All: Yes, sir!
Official: “Iwasaki Yataro, for being unable to complete the mission ordered by Gōtō Shōjiro, there is no excuse. But taking all other factors into consideration, I have decided to disregard it.”
Official: That’s it. (He leaves)
IK: Thank you, my lord!
IM: He’s been forgiven!
IY: What a good soul he is, Yoshida-sama
Yanosuke: What has brother done, I wonder?
IY: No idea!
(Yataro wails out loud in relief. He holds the letter up for all to see.
At the same time, Takechi meditates in his dojo. He slowly opens his eyes as his 3 disciples Nasu Shingo, Ooishi Danzoe and Yasuoka Kasuke arrive.)
TH: You’re all here, Ooishi, Nasu, Yasuoka.
NS: No-one followed us here.
TH: (nods) I need your help on a very important matter.
(Morning again. Ryoma has had another sleepless night. He looks torn and undecided as he recalls the scene with Sawamura Sōnojō the day before.)
SS: Ryoma, the Kinnōtō’s Yoshimura Toratarō has fled the clan (dappan)!
SS: Let’s leave Tosa too, Ryoma! I’ve been thinking of our escape route. From Yusuhara through the Niraga Pass, or the Kujuukumagari Pass, and we’ll reach Nagahama. Then we cross the sea.
R: Wait, hold on, Sōnojō!
SS: Don’t tell me you’re still hesitating!
R: Forsaking Tosa means forsaking our parents and siblings as well!
SS: This is the only chance we’ll get, Ryoma!
(Ryoma is in torment as he has to make his decision quickly.)
SH: Uncle Ryoma! (Once more, he pretends to sleep.) Get up now!
(At breakfast, Otome has come home again. Ryoma eats silently as the rest of the family talk.)
SH: When did you come back, Auntie Otome?
SO: Last night.
SC: And I was thinking who it was knocking on the door in the middle of the night.
SG: You’re Okanōe’s wife already!
SI: You can’t run home every time you have a fight with your husband!
SO: It’s hard to explain what happens between husband and wife. Isn’t it the same for you brother?
SC: Eh? (to Gonpei) Has something happened?
SG: No…….(Otome tries to hide her smile) Oh, by the way, the Yoshimura family’s Toratarō’s dappan has caused an uproar.
(Ryoma stops eating)
SC: Yes, I heard about it too.
SI: Me too. (Ryoma looks at his family and slowly puts his bowl down) What will become of Yoshimura-sama and his family?
SG: I’m afraid they won’t be able to get away with it. They might lose their jobs, or worse, have their property confiscated.
SI: (Ryoma looks concerned) Eh? How can they do that?!
SG: Ryoma, you wouldn’t do such a thing, would you?
(Ryoma does not answer, he is deep in his thoughts. Silence fills the room. Everyone looks at him, suddenly afraid.)
R: (wakes up from his reverie) Eh?
(Worried faces look back at him.)
SC: Your brother just asked if you’ll flee the clan too.
R: (tries to laugh it off) Ah…what….what do you mean by that, brother?
R: (talking very fast) I’m full now, (jumps up) I’ve got kenjutsu practice today….
SI: Ryoma-san,…….you’ll be opening your dojo in Tosa, right?
R: (pauses, ill at ease)…..Whatever will happen next (looks at his family) I can’t tell either……..(they wait for him to say more)……I’ll go out now.
(Ryoma leaves at once. The family is quiet. He stops outside the house, looking stressed as he gazes back. Then putting on his sword with determination, he walks off. In the house, Gonpei eats in silence. Iyo looks like she wants to cry. Chino, Harui and Otome are each deep in their own thoughts.)
SI: Could it be that Ryoma-san is……
(No-one dares to answer. Suddenly Gonpei jumps up and runs to Ryoma’s room.)
SC: Omaesan? (My husband)
(Gonpei starts to go through Ryoma’s things in a frenzy.)
(The rest of the family rush up into Ryoma’s room.)
SC: What are you doing?!! Omaesan!! You can’t do this behind Ryoma-san’s back!!
SH: Please stop that, Father!
SG: Be quiet! (He’s throwing everything out of the drawers)
SC: Omaesan, don’t!!
SH: (crying) Father!
(Otome looks on quietly. Finally, Gonpei finds the dappan escape map that Sawamura Sōnojō gave to Ryoma.)
SG: What is this?! (He shows it to Otome and Iyo.)
SO: The dappan…route…
SH: No!! It’s not true!!
SG: I don’t agree…. I will not allow this!!
(Gonpei throws the map down and pushes past Otome. She grabs onto him.)
SO: Please wait, Brother!
SG: Why are you stopping me?!!
SO: Ryoma…… Ryoma really wants to do this!
SC: What are you saying?
SO: You saw it too, didn’t you? Ryoma’s face just now! Ryoma’s been sacrificing his own wishes all this time!
SG: Otome, dappan is a serious crime of disrespect to his Lordship! It’s the death penalty if he gets caught!! He must have been misled by someone else!
SI: That child could not have thought about such a terrifying thing himself! Otome-san, you know he wouldn’t do this, right?
SH: I agree!
SO: The Ryoma I know, is a man who has extraordinary aspirations! (She looks at Gonpei, with tears in her eyes) He’s not someone who can be cooped up in Tosa. He’s a man with extraordinary aspirations! Ryoma’s found it, the path he should take! He’s finally found it!
SG: (eyes wide open and tearing up. He sits down in denial) What are you saying?! He’s just a cry baby! A kid who wets his bed at night! He can’t possibly be someone who can accomplish great deeds….!!
SO: That was a long time ago, big brother….. (everyone is crying now) To hold Ryoma back in Tosa, that’s just our own wishful thinking! There’s something he really wants to do, but to be stuck running a dojo here for his life? That’s just too cruel!! That child has……finally found…….the path he should take……
(The family are crying. No-one says another word. They all know they must let him go.
In the meantime, Ryoma talks to Takechi Hanpeita at the dojo.)
R: Yoshida Tōyō-sama is not a bad person. Yes, perhaps he thinks differently from Takechi-san, but, he does think deeply for the good of Tosa
T: (calmly drinking tea) So this is the excuse you have for not killing Tōyō? (Tomi hides behind the screen listening to every word) Enough, Ryoma. After I heard that Tōyō was still alive, I was relieved.
TH: You’re right. It’s wrong to kill just because we have different views. You saved me this time (glances at Tomi behind the screen) And I have to apologize to Tomi for making her worry like that.
(Relieved, Tomi leaves the room. Ryoma only realized then that she had stayed behind after serving tea. After she left, he moves closer to Takechi. He is even more concerned now.)
R: You mustn’t do it, Takechi-san! If you kill Yoshida-sama, the Takechi-san I know, will never come back! (he holds Takechi’s hand in his own) This is a plea from the Ryoma who’s played with you since we were kids! I beg you, Takechi-san! Please stop it now! Please!!
(Takechi smiles wistfully and pats Ryoma on the shoulder.)
TH: When was that? That time when the two of us wanted to catch sparrows. I don’t remember who told me to soak rice overnight in sake, and then sprinkle it in the yard. Then the sparrows eating the rice will be too drunk to stand, and we’d be able to catch some to play with. But then, we tried it (he chuckles) and the sparrows finished up every single grain and flew away. The two of us could only watch it happen.
(Ryoma gets very disturbed, while Takechi continues to smile sweetly as he talks.)
TH: We used to be so silly (his smile disappears) People learn to get smarter as they grow up, and they’ll no longer be able to stand together when looking at the same things. It’s not the same anymore as when we stood together to watch the sparrows. It’s different now.
(Ryoma stares at Takechi. He blinks hard to stop his tears, then lowers his head and says nothing.
Outside the Iwasaki home, Yataro hands a stack of chopped firewood to Kisei.)
Y: This should be enough.
Y: The fire in the furnace is burning low, go quick.
IK: What is it?
Y: We’ll be together forever, won’t we?
IK: (smiles and nods) Yes, we will.
(Yataro looks at Kisei as she goes back into the house. He turns around and sees an unhappy Ryoma. But Ryoma immediately squeezes out a smile on seeing Yataro.)
R: Oi, Yataro! How’re you doing?
Y: Ryoma, what do you want?
R: Well, I suddenly felt like seeing your face.
Y: (not paying attention and continues to chop firewood) What?
R: (spies some paper) Oh, what’re those?
Y: Can’t you see for yourself? They’re calculations.
R: You know how to do these?
Y: Remember when I drew on the Magistracy, and got myself thrown in jail?
Y: There was an old man in my cell. He taught me the essence of trading.
Y: It’s an interesting look at how the same product can carry a different value for different buyers
R: Well, that’s the first time I’ve heard anything like that! I’m very interested in trading too! (chuckles) The main line of my family runs the pawn shop “Saidani House”. I used to play at the counter when I was young…..In other words, I’ve also got the blood of a merchant in me
Y: Oh I see. So that’s where you got that skill in getting your way around people
Y: No wonder you have a way of getting into everybody’s good books!
R: (sobers up and mumbles to himself) If I’m so good at managing people, I’d be staying in Tosa all the way….
Y: What was that?
R: (not amused anymore) No, nothing! (Nods to himself) Sorry for disturbing you when you’re busy. Well, I better get going…..(he looks at Yataro and nods his head again) Yeah….. (then starts to laugh at Yataro’s puzzled face, and walks off)
Y: Hey, Ryoma. Why did you come here?
R: (not looking at Yataro) Didn’t I tell you already? I just wanted to see you.
(He plays restlessly with a stalk. Fiinally he turns around and looks at Yataro, unable to smile anymore.)
R: Well I’m leaving….
(Ryoma turns away and manages to walk a few steps before he runs into the bushes. Yataro stares after Ryoma, and then thinks nothing more of his strange behaviour.
It is night when Ryoma returns home. The house is dark. He enters quietly, looks around and takes a deep breath. Then he notices a light in his own room. Climbing up, he sees Otome sewing his clothes.)
R: (awkwardly) Sis!
SO: (not looking at him) Where’ve you been? It’s so late now.
R: (tries to laugh it off) What are you doing?
SO: I’m sewing over your hakama (pants)
SO: If I don’t make them stronger, they won’t be able to withstand all that travelling
(Ryoma starts blinking. He opens his mouth but doesn’t know what to say. Otome pushes a bag of packed food in front of him.)
SO: Take these with you. (Ryoma looks at them wide-eyed) Mother and Chino-san made them. Harui helped as well.
SO: And also, the sword over there….Brother is giving it to you
(Ryoma is stunned. He knows the sword.)
SO: It’s the Sakamoto family heirloom. The legendary sword Hizen Tadahiro (肥前忠広) Take it with you.
(Tears fill Ryoma’s eyes. He realizes what has happened.)
SO: I’ve finished! They should be good now.
R: (His voice barely a whisper) Sis….(Tears start flowing down, his voice breaks) I….I…..
SO: You don’t need to say anything, Ryoma. You must take care of yourself. (She’s crying too) You must!
(Ryoma is too overwhelmed with emotion to talk. He cries openly as he hears what his family has done for him.)
SO: Although you’ve inherited a good sword, you must never use it without good reason (she holds his hand) Wherever you are, we’ll always be thinking of you.
R: I’m sorry….I’m sorry! Sis!
(Otome hugs Ryoma as they both cry.)
SO: Take care. Ryoma, take care!
R: (holding on to his sister) Sor…sor….sorry…..
(She lets go, and runs down the stairs.)
R: Sorry! I’m sorry Chino-san! Harui! (Harui listens in bed, her eyes shut tight, her face wet with tears)
I’m sorry! Mother! (Iyo prays, as she listens to Ryoma upstairs. Her hands are shaking. She too is crying.
Ryoma hugs the sword, tears streaming down) I’m sorry! I’m sorry Brother!….(Gonpei lies in bed. He listens to his baby brother’s crying.)
R: I’m sorry!!
(The next morning, a beautiful day. As usual, Harui calls Ryoma up for breakfast.)
SH: Uncle Ryoma! (she climbs up) Get up now!
(The room is empty. Ryoma has gone. At breakfast, no-one talks. The four women sit across the room to Gonpei. There is a big empty space by his side.)
SG: After I finish this, I’ll go to Saidani House. Although the Joshi like to brag and show off, many of them live on a very tight budget. They should have a few of their family treasures pawned at Saidani House. As long as we hold the loans ledger, even with Ryoma’s dappan, they wouldn’t do anything to the Sakamoto family that easily.
SG: (determined) We have our own way of fighting too!
(Yataro stands outside his house, alone, with an abacus in his hand.)
Y: (narration) When I heard that Ryoma had fled the domain with Sawamura Sōnojō, it was already dusk of that day.
(It starts to rain. Yataro picks up his calculations and sits in the front porch, holding them close to his chest and looking lost.)
Y: (narration) However, without Ryoma, something terrible happened soon in Tosa….
(Night-time. Yoshida Tōyō walks home in the storm, accompanied by his servants. Suddenly, he is attacked by 3 masked swordsmen.)
YT: Who are you?! You know I’m Yoshida Tōyō and you dare to do this on purpose?!
(We see Takechi calmly painting a picture at home, as this attack is going on.)
TT: It’s raining heavier and heavier.
(Back to Yoshida Tōyō…..)
YT: Are you Takechi’s henchmen?
(No-one answers. Yoshida puts up a fight, but in the end, he is wounded. The swordsmen jump on him together. He is struck several times.)
YT: (in his dying breath) Takechi! You stupid fool!
(Takechi focuses on his painting. Tomi smiles as she looks at her husband, glad to have the old Takechi back. The swordsmen leave and Yoshida Tōyō’s body is left on the street in the heavy rain. Ryoma’s room remains empty, occupied now by the cat and his old sword.)
