(At Osaka Katsu Juku, the trainees engage in a tug of war.)
SY: Ready, start! When your ships are in the open seas, you may sail through heavy storms. To control the ship through the raging waves, you must rely on your physical strength!
Misc: Heave ho! Heave ho! Heave ho!
(The trainees have a race carrying sandbags.)
Misc: Go! Go! Go!
(Ryoma pushes himself hard through the physical training. He is still in pain, from Hirai Shujiro’s compelled seppuku. He recalls Kao’s letter.)
HK: (voiceover) Ryōma-san, are you doing well? Yesterday, my brother Shūjirō committed seppuku.
HK: I just can’t …understand it. If Brother hasn’t done anything wrong, then why order him to commit seppuku? Tell me, Ryōma-san. Tell me….
(The trainees have a wrestling match.)
(Ryoma wins. He’s charged up and aggressive.)
R: Who’s next!
(An instructor walks into the ring. )
(The match is intense. Kondo Chojiro cannot bear to watch Ryoma punishing himself through his anguish. Ryoma finally brings his opponent down.)
R: (punches his fist in the air) YES~~!!
Episode 21: Furusato no Tomoyo (故郷の友よ Hometown Friends)
Y: (narration) In the year Bunkyu 3, July, Ryoma went to visit Katsu Rintaro in Kyo again.
(Ryoma gives Katsu a back massage as they talk.)
R: Please tell me, Sensei. It wasn’t so long ago when the Joi faction was in power in Japan. But, the situation’s completely turned around now. The Bakufu promises Joi, but they haven’t done a thing.
KR: Ouch! Ouch! It hurts! Hey!
R: I’m sorry! Sorry….
KR: Shoulders, now. Shoulders, shoulders.
R: Yes, sir! (he starts massaging again) What on earth is happening to this world? What makes the world change like this, Sensei?
KR: It’s His Majesty, the Emperor in Kyo.
KR: Joi was able to cause such an impact, because the Emperor was surrounded by Choshu’s Joi activists.
(Choshu retainer and Joi vanguard Kusaka Genzui meets with pro-Joi court noble Sanjo Sanetomi.)
KG: The Choshu Han has not lost to the foreigners !
KR: But now, the non-Joi Satsuma Han has stepped in.
(Prince Nakagawa aka Nakaga no Miya Sonyu Shinnō / Prince Akihiko / Shōren-in no Miya, meets with Satsuma retainer Takasaki Masakaze.)
TM: The Satsuma Han is thinking of ways to protect Japan without going to war!
KR: It all rested with whether the Emperor concurred with Satsuma or Choshu’s views.
R: Sensei, what will happen to Takechi-san? The Kinnoto members…. and Izo, what’ll happen to them?
KR: Hey, Sakamoto. What are the things you absolutely must do now? You don’t have the leisure to get involved, do you?
(Katsu pats Ryoma on the back and walks away. But Ryoma appears unconvinced. In Tosa, Tomi visits the Sakamoto family.)
<Tosa, Sakamoto residence>
SO: How is Takechi-san?
TT: He spends his time painting.
SC: He must be depressed because of Shujiro-san.
SI: It can’t be helped. After all, they were childhood friends.
(The women are quiet. Suddenly they hear screams from the servants. Yataro has walked into the house uninvited, bringing his birdcages and other wares with him.)
Y: Oh, you’re…you’re…
SC: What’re you doing!
Y: I can’t sell my wood!
Y: What should I do?!
SO: Even so, you don’t have to come and tell us!
Y: Wasn’t it the Sakamoto family who paid for the wood? Shouldn’t I need to report my sales progress to you?
SC: Then come back after you’ve sold them!
Y: After all, I live so far away. This is a good place for me to take a rest. (He points to Harui) Hey, I want tea! Tea! Tea!
SI: Can you please bring some, Harui?
(Harui reluctantly gets up.)
Y: I want it hot. (Harui ignores him) Not too cold….you get it?
SO: (to Tomi) This fellow is called Iwasaki Yataro. He’s Ryoma’s friend.
Y: (points to Tomi) Who’s that?
SO: Takechi Hanpeita-san’s wife. (Tomi stands up as she is introduced.)
Y: I didn’t expect that old mule’s lady to be such a beauty! Oh! You know, Takechi-san……Takechi-san was such a big shot in Kyo. Now he’s like a squashed up lantern (he laughs)
SO: (tries to hit Yataro who dodges away) What’re you saying!!
Y: You might as well tell him to stop being a samurai and come sell wood with me.
SO: Oh shush!
Y: Heh? Heh? (he taunts them further)
SC: Don’t listen to his nonsense, Tomi-san.
SI: Yes, go home.
TT: (she smiles) Okay……Thank you very much.
SO: (Otome hands over a tray of vegetables) Come again.
TT: See you.
(Tomi leaves. Otome turns around and glares at Yataro who is still there.)
SO: How can you say such despicable things!
SC: You call yourself a person!
(The Sakamoto women leave Yataro unattended.)
Y: I said that to help him!
(Harui finally comes back with tea. She sticks the tray in Yataro’s face coldly.)
Y: (takes the cup and pats Harui on the shoulder) When you’re grown-up, you’ll see. I’m really kind. AHH! HOT! HOT! HOT! HOT! HOT!
(Harui walks away, ignoring Yataro’s cries. In the meantime, Tomi has returned home.)
TH: Is everyone in the Sakamoto family well?
TT: (smiles) Yes, they gave me dried mushrooms and eggplant.
TT: What did you draw today?
TH: A sparrow. Every time I draw this, Izo loves it. I wonder how he is now…..
(Kyoto. Ryoma runs into a teahouse. Izo’s girlfriend, Natsu is overjoyed to see him.)
R: Come! Come here. (Ryoma scans the teahouse as he speaks with Natsu.) Has Izo been to see you?
N: (Natsu shakes her head emphatically.) If he gets caught, will he be sent back to Tosa?
R: He must not get caught. OK, if he does come, you must tell me. Understand?
(Natsu nods. Ryoma gives her a pat, then turns to leave.)
R: Don’t worry!
(Outside a shrine, Izo steals the offerings to eat.)
Y: (narration) Izo was being pursued by Tosa Officers by order of Yamauchi Yodo-ko.
(Unknown to either, Ryoma passes close by. He sees another fugitive being apprehended, while Izo hears it from his hiding place.)
Misc: Take him away!
R: (to himself) Where are you, Izo?
OI: (terrified) …don’t want to get caught….I don’t want to get caught….
(At the Imperial Palace)
Y: (narration) And then, the Emperor has finally decided…..
Kugyō: The Emperor has spoken. “It is true, I have issued the command to implement Joi.” However, His Majesty dislikes foreigners as He dislikes cats and dogs. “I do not intend to engage in a war and I never have.”
(Sanjo Sanetomi is shocked and lost. A fellow Kuge looks at him with a sneer.)
Y: (narration) In that instant, the Joi faction within the Court, had fallen.
<Bunkyu 3, August 18 / Imperial Palace, Sakaimachi Mon (Gate)>
Y: (narration) In the year Bunkyu 3, August 18, 1,000 Choshu men gathered at the Sakaimachi Imperial Gate, to defend against Satsuma and 6,000 other soldiers.
(Satsuma retainer Takasaki Masakaze faces Choshu’s Kusaka Genzui and Katsura Kogoro. The Choshu Imperial guards are being ousted by force from their station at the Sakaimachi Gomon / Sakaimachi Imperial Gate.)
TM: Choshu has been relieved of its imperial duties! You must leave the Capital at once!
Misc: Get out of here! That’s right!
KG: Rifles! (draws his sword) At my command!
KK: (runs out in between the 2 armies) Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop!…..Don’t shoot! Or we’ll play right into Satsuma’s hands! Control ourselves! Control!
TM: Let’s see if you dare to try. Shoot at the direction of the Palace and you’ll be branded enemies of the court!
KK: (Katsura restrains Kusaka Genzui) Control yourself, Kusaka! Control yourself! (Kusaka screams in anguish.)
Y: (narration) This incident was later called the “Coup of August 18th”*
(The Choshu Joi extremists are banished from Kyoto and return to their Han. Kusaka Genzui leads the army of outcasts. Included in the retreat are Sanjo Sanetomi and the other 6 pro-Joi Kuge / Court Nobles*.)
KG: ”The relentlessness of this blanket of rain, The drenching of tears on these sleeves…..”
Y: (narration) The pro-Joi nobles who were cast out of Kyo could only escape to Choshu.
KG: ”…..clear the darkness from the City (Kusaka stops and looks back at the 7 nobles.) And relive the beauty of the Capital’s moon.”*
(The nobles cry piteously while Katsura Kogoro looks on, bitter and furious.)
Y: (narration) Thus began the fierce enmity between Satsuma and Choshu, and their mutual fight to the death.
(At Tosa, Morishita Matabei reports on recent events to Yamauchi Yodo.)
MM: Choshu retainers have disappeared from the Capital.
MM: So has the Joi faction within the Court, we hear.
YY: (laughs) At last, the time has come.
MM: My Lord, had you foreseen that Joi was going out?
YY: Send a message to all Kinnoto people outside Tosa. Return to the Han at once!
MM: Yes, my Lord!
(At the Takechi residence…)
Misc: Takechi-sensei! Takechi-sensei!
Misc: Kinnoto members in Kyo have been ordered to return to the Han!
TH: Ordered to return? (Takechi is shocked)
Misc: The Great Lord has said, anyone defying the order will be treated as a deserter….Takechi-sensei….What’s going to happen to the Tosa Kinnoto?
(At Edo castle, Katsu Rintaro passes by the Bakufu Elder Itakura Katsukiyo in the corridors.)
IK: Katsu-dono should best be wary now, shouldn’t you? I hear there’re many Joi supporters in Katsu Juku. It’s probably wiser to be rid of them at such a time. (he walks off laughing)
(At Tosa Kinnoto ……)
TH: Mochitsuki, Shimamura and Kawarazuka have returned. From now on, they will work together with those of you who had stayed in Tosa. Listen! The flame of Joi is still alight! We haven’t done anything wrong!
All: Yes sir!
TH: I believe in the Great Lord. We at the Tosa Kinnoto, for the sake of Yamauchi Yodo-ko, we will give our lives to crush the foreign countries!
(At Osaka Katsu Juku……)
Misc: 1! 2! 1! 2!
KR: Gather around! Gather around!
SY: Gather around! Quickly!
KR: There must be some amongst you who have received the order to return to your Han. However, it’s not wise to go back at the moment! No! (Katsu holds his sword up) I do not permit you to return! You are now in the process of building the Navy for Japan! Not for your Han! In other words, do not return. (He turns to leave)
KR: For you now….”To lose is to win”!
(After their training, the Tosa men return to their quarters.)
TT: What should we do? Yodo-ko has instructed us to return to Tosa.
CT: How can we defy the Great Lord’s orders!
SS: Idiots! Shujiro-san has been made to commit harakiri!
MK: But…the Kinnoto members in Kyo have all gone back! How could we stay here comfortably ourselves?!
CT: I agree! Takechi-sensei has returned to Tosa too!
(Toku, daughter of the Yamato House where the Tosa men are boarding, overhears their discussion.)
T: Chojiro-san, what will you do? (Chojiro does not know what to say.)
(That night, Ryoma practices kendo in the yard to clear his mind. It doesn’t help. He trudges back into his room, restless and distraught. Chojiro comes in.)
KC: You’re worried about Takechi-san and the others. (Ryoma looks at Chojiro, he is obviously in torment.) Sakamoto-san is thinking of going back to Tosa?
R: In Echizen, Yokoi Shōnan -sensei had said to me, “In the changing tides of the world, the fate of a single man is insignificant as a poppy seed.” Yes, Yokoi-sensei’s words are right. But…. I just can’t control myself! Even though Joi is dead now, it’s insane to treat Takechi-san and the others as criminals!
KC: Because I wanted to do something for Japan, I left Tosa, and my business to become a samurai. Whatever happens, I can’t return to Tosa anymore. (He walks towards Ryoma.) Takechi-san and the others are originally samurai. Whatever happens, aren’t they prepared for what’s to come?
R: True. What you say is true. But…. Even so……! (Ryoma looks away in pain.)
(In Tosa, Yataro pulls his cart loaded with lumber and stops in front of a derelict house.)
Y: Oh dear! Oh dear~! (He runs to the broken walls and sticks his hands in) Look at them! (He runs in the house, talking to the people inside) Oh! Oh! What a gaping hole! You won’t be able to keep the rain and wind out. Come with me! Come with me!
Man: What do you want?
Y: Come! Come!
Man: What is it?
(Yataro brings the man to his cart, motioning to the wood.)
Y: You better mend it with this. It’s 100 mon* apiece. And you get a gift Buddha as well. I carved it myself. What a great bargain!
Man: Don’t want! (he turns to leave.)
Kids: Don’t want! Don’t want!
Y: (Yataro chases after him.) Then…..then…then….. how about 80 mon? For just 80 mon, you can mend that broken wall.
All: Don’t want!
Kids: Don’t want! (The family goes back in the house.)
Y: Curse you people! Don’t expect me to sell anything to you even if you beg! (Yataro sinks to the ground next to his cart and starts to cry.) It’s no good….. It’s no good…… Even giveaways aren’t working. I don’t know what to do! Not fair!
(Yataro looks at the animals. He starts thinking and it suddenly hits him. He walks back into the house.)
Y: I….I will….I will fix your house for you! You only need to pay for the wood that’s used. (He points to the broken walls.) I will mend each and every hole there is! How about it? How about it?!
(Takechi Hanpeita walks in town. He gazes up at the castle in the distance. It looks like a gale is brewing. Yataro arrives from the opposite direction, pulling his cart happily. He sees Takechi, looking at the castle.)
Y: But of course, Takechi-san! You’re going to the castle to pledge your devotion to the Lord, right?
TH: Yataro, why are you pulling a cartload of wood?
Y: I sell them. I’ve decided to make a career for myself in trading. (He holds up his hand.) Stop! Stop! Stop! I know what you’re going to say. “Yataro! Have you no honour as a samurai!” You’re going to tell me off again. (Takechi looks away exasperated.) I don’t have such a thing. For me, the katana is never as reliable as the abacus. I’ll make a success for myself in business!
TH: ……I see. I’ve been looking down on you all this time
Y: (under his breath)….what?
TH: However, we probably need people like you in this world. Your wife seems to have a pretty good nature. Hurry up and have some children. (He walks off.)
Y: Takechi-san! (Takechi stops.) Today, I was finally able to sell some wood. (He pours the copper coins out to show Takechi.) For first time, I earned 60 mon. I learnt that a gift isn’t always an object. It’s one person’s good intention to another. It was the Great Lord who ordered Hirai Shujiro’s harakiri, isn’t it? Aren’t you angry about it? Don’t you feel that’s so unreasonable? Yet despite everything, you still adore the Great Lord? Takechi-san, you know how painful you looked when you stared at the castle! (Yataro holds Takechi on the shoulders) If you can accept people like me on this world, then Takechi-san should also live as you like, just as long as you live with integrity!
TH: I’ve always lived with integrity! To serve our Lord with dedication, that’s the basic duty of a samurai!
(Takechi pushes Yataro away and walks off angrily.)
Y: Oh, yeah?! It’s your life. What’s it got to do with me! Do as you please!
(At Kyoto, Katsu Rintaro comes back to his room to find Ryoma waiting. He sighs, knowing what Ryoma is here for.)
KR: Sakamoto, what are you doing here? What about the Juku?
R: Sensei, can I take leave from training for a short while?
R: I know the training in Katsu Juku is very important. However….However, just for now, please let me search for Izo.
KR: You’re still on about that.
R: Izo is crying for help! I can hear him so clearly!
KR: Well…. I can only hear the sound of bells.
KR: It won’t be long before the killing begins here. The streets of Kyo will be bathed in blood. You want to rescue your friend in the midst of such a carnage. That’s out of the question! Go back to Osaka.
R: In that case….In that case, please let me return to Tosa! Yamauchi Yodo-ko is bound to throw Takechi-san into jail. When that happens, Takechi-san will suffer the same fate as Shujiro-san!
R: Takechi-san and Izo are my childhood friends! Even though we don’t agree, we’re still friends!
KR: I’ve said, no-one is allowed to go!
R: I beg you!! (he kneels before Katsu) I can’t….I can’t bear with it anymore! Now when they’re all going to be killed, what am I doing…! What….What am I doing here….!
KR: (Katsu kneels down with Ryoma and puts a hand on his shoulder.) Fine. Then what can you do when you’re back in Tosa! Eh?! Are you going to tell Takechi to escape from Tosa? Or to admit “I was wrong”; “Joi was a mistake from the start” and beg for his life with Yodo-ko? Listen! Takechi must be prepared for it already. As his friend, you can only stand from a distance to watch over how he lives his life. You hear!? Sakamoto Ryoma is the man I picked! For Japan, for the future of Japan! To groom you for great deeds, I took you as my disciple! (Ryoma starts to cry) How can I allow my dear disciple to be killed!
R: But Sensei….!
KR: I understand.
KR: I understand….I understand! I understand.
(Ryoma breaks down. Tears fill Katsu’s eyes too. In Tosa, Takechi Hanpeita and his wife Tomi are having breakfast. Takechi does not eat, holding his bowl deep in thought. )
TT: Omaesan. What’s the matter?
TH: (slowly coming out of his reverie) Oh….I was just thinking about Ryoma.
TH: I was thinking what he’d say if he was here. I’d told everyone at the Kinnoto that “The flame of Joi is still alight”; “Trust me”…. If he was there, he’d say “What are you talking about, Takechi-san”…. And tell me off at once. I do….know it…. Somewhere down the road, everything somehow changed. However, I couldn’t bring myself to tell them. They’re all…. following me because they believe in me. If I had opened up to them now, they’d think “What have we been living for all this time?” And start to doubt.
TH: I can only keep going in this way of life. I couldn’t …..live like…..Ryoma or Yataro.
TT: (tears stream down her face) That’s good enough. That’s who my husband is.
TH: Tomi, only to you, I must apologise. We don’t have children. It’s just the two of us. And I’ve always left you on your own, to bear with all that loneliness….
TH: I’m sorry.
TT: What are you saying….. A childless woman would have expected to be cast out. Yet Omaesan never said a word against me. You’ve always treated me with kindness. I have never ever felt lonely at all!
TT: I am Omaesan’s wife. It is my duty to support you. If you can’t open up to people outside, you can always say it to me. Please….. show me your real self!
(Takechi happily nods through his tears.)
TH: Tomi, from now on, we’ll spend our time together. (Tomi smiles back at Takechi.) Before summer is over, let’s go to Katsurahama*. The sea will be beautiful, glittering in the sun.
TT: Yes, let’s.
TH: Then in autumn…..
(Someone bangs loudly at the gate.)
Voice: Is Takechi Hanpeita here! Takechi Hanpeita!
TH: In autumn, let’s go to see the autumn leaves.
(Takechi ignores it and continues to talk to his wife. Tomi looks concerned, but she keeps her eyes on Takechi, listening to every word.)
TH: The two of us at the hot springs. What do you think, Tomi?
TT: (quietly, smiling through her tears) Okay….
Voice: By order of the Great Lord, come out at once!
TH: When winter comes, let me see….
TT: I don’t want to go anywhere (her lips are trembling) I just want to spend our time here together….
(Sound of the gate being kicked open…..)
TH: Okay….we’ll stay home then.
(Several armed men come into the house and the yard.)
Officer: Takechi, didn’t you hear what I was saying?
TH: I did. But my wife and I are having breakfast.
Officer: Stand up. Hand over your sword to us.
(One of the officers picks up Takechi’s katana, while he unstraps his short blade / wakizashi* from his belt.)
TH: Tomi, I’ll be back soon.
(Takechi gets up and passes his wakizashi to the officer. Tomi helps Takechi get ready. She hands him kaishi* which he folds and tucks into the breast of his kimono, then helps him into his crested-haori (coat)*. Takechi leaves with the men as Tomi sees him off.)
TT: Please take care on the way.
(Tomi bows low. Her husband stops and looks back at her.)
Officer: Move it!
(Takechi walks off with the officers, head held high. When they have left, Tomi goes back into the house and sits quietly by herself. Tears trickle down her face.)
Y: (narration) Takechi Hanpeita was imprisoned on September 21, the year Bunkyu 3.
(At the same time, armed guards surround other Tosa Kinnoto members.)
Misc: What’s this?!
Officer: Come with us quietly! We’re from the Metsuke Office*! Arrest them!
Guards: Yes sir!
Y: (narration) And finally, all the Kinnoto members in Tosa were hunted down by Yodo-ko with a snarl.
(Ryoma walks along the streets of Kyo. He looks sadly at children play-fighting with shinai / bamboo swords. A small boy bumps into him.)
Boy: I’m sorry!
Y: (narration) Companions who grew up playing and fighting together…..
(The little boy runs off, leaving a ball behind. Ryoma picks it up and chases after him.)
R: Wait! Hey, wait!
(In the backstreets nearby, Izo is being chased.)
Y: ……are each being consumed by their own destiny…..
(Yataro pours out a bagful of copper coins / mon onto the floor. His family are astounded to see it.)
IY: What the…?!
Y: (in tears) I’ve sold all the wood….! I’ve sold all of it, all of it, all the wood! (he hugs Kisei emotionally) Kisei! I sold them!
IM: (to Yajiro) Omaesan!
IY: (Yajiro and Miwa hug each other) That’s great! You did it, Yataro! (The Iwasaki’s are overjoyed.)
(Izo keeps running until he collapses. He is terrified, panting hard. His pursuers are close by. Children’s voices can be heard from the main street.)
Child: (voice) Be quick!
Child: (voice) Wait for me!
R: (voice) Wait!
(Izo catches a glimpse of Ryoma as he runs past by the alley.)
R: (voice) Hey, you dropped this!
OI: Ryoma! (He tries to run out.) Ryoma!!
(Izo stops. Men in mailcoats and white haori* walk slowly into the alley*, sandwiching Izo from the front and back. They draw their swords. Izo is trapped. On the main street, Ryoma helps to tie up the little boy’s ball.)
R: Done! Take care of it!
Boy1: Thank you!
Boy2: Thank you!
Boy3: Thank you!
Boy2: Let’s go!
(Ryoma stands up. Suddenly he hears someone screaming for him.)
(Ryoma is not sure where it’s coming from. In the meantime, Izo has his back to a wall.)
(He throws a barrel desperately at one of the men and pushes his way through. Out on the street, Ryoma is still looking around for the voice.)
(Izo throws anything he can get his hands on, just to keep the men from coming close. He finds a gap and squeezes through to escape. The men calmly follow him and Ryoma cannot hear the screams anymore.)
