On Clothes
F: I don’t think I’m someone with great fashion sense
F: What you wear depends on the TPO, right? Say, (if I’m) going to a high-class restaurant, I’d put on a shirt if not a tie, and a more stylish coat.
F: My clothes are usually the same style. The people in my regular shops would select clothes for me every season and send them over, i.e. I don’t choose what I wear. So what you see in magazines are not my own. Of course, I’d choose amongst what they prepared for me, but I wouldn’t be saying things like “This is not a style I like”, because that’s the fashion selected by the pros.
F: (when trying out clothes for a CM) there’s just so much to go through! Say (the last CM) they had a 10 jō room (i.e. 10 tatami size, approx 16.5㎡) stuffed full hanging with clothes. Just counting black jackets, there were no less than 20 of them. First the stylists would mix and match, and then I’d have to try each set on once…….It IS very tiring. At the end of that, we’d be left with 3 sets. I’d have to put them on again and now they’d be tailored to fit me. Yes, they need to be shortened / lengthened / the waist adjusted / the size of the collar changed, all sorts of things. So only after all that selection, fitting and tailoring until we get the best, then we start filming. During filming, they’d still be fixing my clothes off-camera to make sure they look sharp enough at different angles, for every shot.
F: So people may think I look good in my clothes, but I can’t say the same for myself in daily life. Because I only put on what’s comfortable to put on. (The fact that I’ve been chosen as “the top Male Celebrity to dress after”) is not because I dress smart. It’s all the staff who’ve done their job well.
F: Yeah well, I’m in a jersey (today) with jeans, T-shirt and crocs.
On Audience Behaviour
F: There was someone in the audience in Fukuoka this time. During the cup-throwing in “Tsuioku no Ame no Naka”, she really wanted to get one. She has a great figure. Why would I know she’s got a great figure, she wore our tour T-shirt like Yamamoto Linda-san (more here) tied up below the bosom and exposing the belly button. And she was running out with a “ME PLEASE!” look.
F: I didn’t look at her face, I was watching her tummy (laugh) and thinking “Some people really dress like that!” But I didn’t throw her the cup. To be honest, that was scary. (laugh) She was so passionate, she scared me.
F: And once in a while, there’d be someone in a bikini. Not around this time of the year, but maybe in summer. I’m not complaining (laugh). Last time during Michishirube (tour), there was someone sitting on the right side of the stage. When I was at Centre Stage, she’d be fine, but when I walked over, she’d quietly open up her parka and show me her cleavage. When I moved off, she’d quietly zip up. I felt I was like a zoo animal being enticed with food to come near. It’s not because of her breasts that I was walking over, not because she’s unzipped that I go near. (laugh)
S: As if saying “Coming for another look?”
F: Yes! Yes! I’m thinking “You gotta be joking” (laugh)
S: But you’d still be looking over quite naturally.
F: Yes, feeling like I’m being played (laugh). And thinking “Not because of that!” as I walk over. What a headache.
On Zoos
F: Zoos make me feel sad. Actually we went to a zoo in Fukuoka 2 days ago. They were saying let’s find somewhere to go. I’m not a fan of zoos. Animals come in 3 groups to me: Pets; wild animals and zoo animals, i.e. those who can only spend their lives in zoos or have been sent to zoos. In particular, zoo animals make me sad. Because there was a zoo, and I thought since I haven’t been in a long time, we decided to go.
F: I’ve seen wild animals, so I feel for those in zoos. But the chimpanzee would throw poo at us.
F: There was a sign saying “Beware, chimpanzee throws poo at onlookers.” (laugh) The chimpanzees there are not in glass cages, so there was a high chance of poo bombs being shot out any time. But it wasn’t poo for us, it was saliva. We went over innocently just to have a look at the chimpanzee. It noticed us and began to spit at us. It must have been very stressed out, I feel so bad.
F: We also saw other animals. When we went to the gorilla, we might have been too loud. We were saying “Look! The Gorilla! What a big guy!” I think we got him mad.
S: Did he start drumming his chest? That must have been threatening.
F: He was clearly separated from us and we knew he couldn’t get near. But somehow, he held a plastic bottle, someone must have thrown it in, and a towel in hand, and kept (beating his chest real loud).
S: I’ve been to many zoos but never seen a gorilla in one do that.
F: This one did. It was very frightening. It was the first time for me too. It’s really sad just watching it.
S: That reminds me of some artists who’d be very nice in front of the camera but can fly off in a rage when they’re angry off-sceeen.
F: Like Tetsuya-san (laugh). When they went on location for “Kinpachi-sensei”, they ran into a gang of Bōsōzoku (motorcycle gang) who were disrupting their filming. Tetsuya-san blew his top at them, saying (in Takeda-san’s voice) “Don’t you think I’m anything (as nice as) like my character on TV, you assholes!” (laugh) Tetsuya-san is awesome!
F: The animals in zoos must be really stressed out. Look at those bears! They just keep walking in circles, they can’t settle down, right? It just breaks my heart. But it also depends on how you look at it. Animals born in a zoo can only survive there.
S: It’ll be very hard for them to return to the wild.
F: Almost impossible to go back. There is a lot for us to think about in zoos. Especially after I’ve been to Hot Spots.
