■ It seems there are lots of secret stories to talk about, in Fukuyama-san’s travels

K: Well, when we were in Yakushima 屋久島 *¹, we got to the airport and found a lot of fans seeing us off from outside the fences. Masha-nii went up the stairway first, he waved to them then entered the plane. When it was my turn, I gave the fans a bow before going inside. Waiting for me in the aisle, Masha-nii said : “You sly fox! And such a formal bow too. I wish I had done the same.”
S: He surprisingly cares a lot about the amount of good impression he creates.
K: I was taken aback, I didn’t expect him to be concerned about things like that.

S: We talked about the “cleanliness of his house” just now. A while back, there was a survey on “The person I most want to do housecleaning for”, and Fukuyama-san was ranked 4th. “He’s so busy, his house must be a mess” that’s what other people think. And normally, he’d correct them immediately “No, my house is very clean!” Instead Fukuyama-san happily said “That would be great!” Perhaps, his image has been too perfect all along, so (by saying this, he hopes) it will bring out the motherly nature in people and raise his amicability. I didn’t think he’d care about such things, I was really astounded.

K: But the everyday Masha-nii, is a very ordinary person, how can I put it…..when we were in Hatoma-jima 鳩間島*² in Okinawa, he’ll play the guitar and sing in the ruins in front of the community hall; or cross his legs and sit on the pier to eat his bento (lunch box).
S: Haruhiko-kun, won’t you feel less and less moved by Fukuyama-san playing the guitar in front of you now?
K: No! No! Not at all! It’s really very touching!

S: You lie, you must be used to it by now, aren’t you? If it were a woman, she’d probably be so moved she’ll faint, I’m taking about that degree of emotion! But I’ve experienced it too. We had a new year gathering with the radio staff in January and we went to a karaoke. Fukuyama-san never used to sing at karaokes, but that day, he sang from beginning to end. And when we wanted to move on to another place, he said “I want to go to karaoke.” (At the new place) he just kept on singing. We got used to it towards the middle and started chatting among us. At that time, Fukuyama-san was doing シブがき隊 Shibugaki-tai’s “Zokkon 命 (Love)”*³, complete with dance steps! In the end, nobody was listening, we were just talking to each other!

K: Oh, I went with MICRO of the HOME MADE*⁴ family and his 3-member band, to karaoke with Masha-nii. When he was singing his heart out, I saw MICRO asleep at the side.
S: Sometimes, I’d get the feeling “What a waste!” and I’d want say out at that moment “This is very impolite to him, isn’t it?”

K: And also, talking about Masha-nii, he’s very strict about other people’s weight!
S: He was terrible to me last year. He kept on calling me “you piggy-boy” (この豚野郎) (laugh). I was on the video clip in last year’s Daikanshasai and he said “Sou-chan, you’re much too fat. We had to use CG to slim down your face.” I thought I can’t be that fat! But because he kept nagging me, I made up my mind and slimmed down within a year.

K: He really doesn’t hold back! I’ve put on a bit of weight, and I’m working it off now all because Masha-nii was on my back. He doesn’t just say “You’ve put on weight”, when we went for drinks, he kept feeling my double chin.
S: Yes, yes! I was there too. It was obvious you hated it, but he seemed like he was having a lot of fun, using your double chin as a wine appetizer (laugh). But after we’ve worked it off, he would commend us. I think it’s because Fukuyama-san likes to self-discipline to start with.

K: He’s very tough on visual appearances, whether for himself or others! That’s why, my fans would send postcards to Masha-nii’s radio show to say “Haruhiko-kun has put on weight lately.”
S: Not just Haruhiko-kun, “Porno Graffitti’s*⁵ (Okano) Akihito-kun has grown fat” or “Yuzu’s (ゆず)*⁶ Iwasawa-kun does not care about his clothes, could you have a word with him?” etc., other artist’s fans will also write to Fukuyama-san.
K: And Masha-nii will really follow-up!
S: He’d immediately speak out from the fans’perspective. I think that’s because Fukuyama-san is very tough on himself too.

K: ……….Is it alright if we only talk about these things? Isn’t it better if we say something good?
S: No no, Fukuyama-san has maxed out in impressions already, it’s better if we can cut down his points a bit!

Kato Haruhiko is a well known Japanese actor and radio personality, and a close friend of Masha. They became friends when both were hosting their individual radio programmes in All Night Nippon (オールナイトニッポン) in 2000. Souguchi Akihisa is a well known radio DJ and since 2004, has been Masha’s partner in the Fukuyama Masaharu’s All Night Nippon Saturday Special Tamashii no Radio (福山雅治のオールナイトニッポンサタデースペシャル 魂のラジオ) weekly broadcast.

*³ Shibugaki-tai was one of the most popular boy bands in the 1980’s. They debut in 1982 and broke up in 1988. “Zokkon 命 (Love)” was the last song they sang together as a band in their farewell concert. Motoki Masahiro (Departures) started his career in this band.
