ANN Tamashii no Radio: The 41-Year-Old Q&A
Extract from the ANN Tamashii no Radio (2010.02.06) and ANN TamaRadi blog (2010.02.10)
■ Q1: What do you do on holidays?
F: On the days I’m off, basically…..I’d go to the gym for training. After I wake up, shower and have a bit to eat, I’d do the laundry and then go to the gym. I’d spend a long time there, around 4 hours. But about 2 hours at the beginning and the end would be used for massage and stretching exercises. Actual training takes about 2 hours. Usually I’d start after noon-time and be home around 6pm. That’s about right.
S: And after you get home? Would you still be energetic enough to want to go to the disco?
(Note: During the first half of the programme, Sou-chan had read out an interview of Masha done in his early years, which talked about discotheques.)
F: If I could, I’d rather do my dancing at home!……..But I don’t dance. (period) When I’m on a filming schedule, I’d have plenty of things to do at home! I have to learn my lines, and rehearse a bit. And I’m the type who needs to recite it out. Saying it out loud, shouting it out. My neighbours would probably be thinking: “That guy next door is possessed by Ryoma again!” Because I’d suddenly call out: “Takechi-san! Please stop that! Takechi-san!!”
S: It’d probably sound really scary to the people next door.
F: Learning my lines would probably take an hour. I’d usually want to have a drink by that time. Then I’d go online, watch some sample movies etc.
S: (In english) Eighteen-years-old-over? Yes!
F: (In english) Yes! I’m Forty-One!!!
Yes, really. That’s true! You can watch them if you’re over 18. Yes!
But upto now……I’m still very frightful of using my credit card on the Net. I’d worry my personal data would be taken and used wrongly in all possible ways. What if I get an invoice out of nowhere asking me to pay in Euro? Honestly…….I really want to pay and watch (the movies)! Not just that little bit, I want to watch freely!
At the same time, some media can only be played on Windows. (Note: Masha is a Mac user.) So I ask my manager Ishida-kun to help.
S: You ask them to help you with these as well?!!
■ Q2: Who do you want to see most, at this moment?
F: Hmmm…..who do I want to see? I guess it would be people who are not in the performing business. Each performer has their own way of expressing themselves, so I wouldn’t be too influenced by them. I want to meet people who are not in that field of work, and have a good talk with them.
Although I’d met the ex-President of Toshiba before, I would like to meet their new President too. And also the CEOs of major corporations (laugh). Say for a company, isn’t it the President who gives it direction? For major corporations, because their chairmanship changes, they (the company) would be different with each generation. But I feel the company that was built up during that specific term, would be a portrayal of its President in office at that time, it’s his creation.
Like Chairman Osato of my management company, although he had been in corporate and artist management all along, I think his greatest creation is this company Amuse. And that’s why, I want to meet those people who are able to lead their companies through vast expansions during their term in office, whatever their line of business is.
■ Q3: Are you the type who likes to whisper sweet nothings with your girlfriend?
F: I wish!! Though I wish I could do that, I’d hope that she’s the one who cuddles up to me, like a cat. I’d be quietly going online (laugh), and would not particularly be bothering her. I wouldn’t mind her leaning against me, just like this. And I’ll be quietly tasting my single malt whisky, clicking on my sample movies……..My girlfriend cuddling up to me as I focus on single malt and websites (laugh)
■ Q4: What do you usually do when you’re in the bath?
F: I’d watch TV. I always have the TV on when I’m in the bath. It’s not that I have any specific show in mind. Unlike the girls, I can’t possibly soak there for an extended time without doing anything. Aren’t there some people who’d light candles and float them on the water? That’s so dangerous!
S: As long as the candles don’t come anywhere near (laugh). It’s also hard for me to blank out my mind and not do anything. So even if I go to a resort…..
F: I can’t just do nothing and waste the time. But it’s OK for me to laze around in a resort. However, to space out and do absolutely nothing in the bath, I cannot! With the TV on, I can stay in for a bit longer.
■ Q5: What movies have you seen recently?
F: Movies….none! I don’t go to the cinema. The latest one is…….ah, a movie that I really wanted to see, but still haven’t finished watching - 愛のむきだし Ai no Mukidashi (Love Exposure)*1. It’s a very long movie, almost 4 hours, but very interesting. I’m watching the DVD.
■ Q6: Food you like?
F: Curry. (He said it again in english). Wasn’t it already written down? (Note: He’s referring to the earlier editions of BROS newsletter.) Basically, all I need is curry and soba. It’s the same even now.
S: So what would you like to do, if tomorrow was the end of the world?
F: Websites. Not the full versions, I insist on watching samples, to the very end. (laugh)
■ Q7: What sort of onigiri (rice balls) do you like?
F: Bonito (おかか okaka). I really like that. There’s also tuna mayonnaise (シーチキンマヨネーズ)*2, spicy pollock roe (明太子 mentaiko), salted salmon roe (イクラ ikura) and cod.
■ Q8: Is there anything that you find yourself “unable to give up, unable to stop”?
F: I cannot stop or give up single malt whisky, of course I’ve also started on sake recently. And….I like to check up real estate online? For this one ….it’s getting quite extreme. Because I need to do it every day. Perhaps it’s my interest, but it’s definitely inherited from my grandfather, avatism for sure. Following real estate is a type of joy, watching the ups and downs of the market. The asset values of real estate are not as influenced by world economy. Even when there are big or small setbacks, you will still find lots where prices stand firm.
■ Q9: How do you get up in the morning?
F: If we have to go on location in the morning, my managers will give me a morning call. But even without the morning call, I’d be able to get up. Even if my managers had overslept, I can wake up by myself! That goes to say “Even Amuse has it too, incidents of oversleeping.” (Amuse ni mo Attanda) Tokyo has it too (Tokyo ni mo Attanda) (laugh).
■ Q10: What is your most precious?
F: That would be you people (fans) of course. You’re obviously my most treasured. Other things would be vintage single malt whisky and….perhaps we can’t call them treasures, but the guitar and amplifier.
■ Q11: What are some things that you will want to challenge yourself with, going forward?
F: I’ve never tried winter sports. Like skiing and snowboarding, not once. That’s why I’d like to try skiing. At my age now, I don’t want to break my bones, so I’ll have to give up snowboarding. In a nutshell, I have missed out on almost all winter sports. And I want to try snow trekking, not on the mountains but flatter trails. Didn’t I go to North Europe last year? It was beautiful there! As long as I was in my outdoor gear, I didn’t feel cold. My body felt like it was on a 4 wheel drive!
■ Q12: Do you think “I am an ossan now”? (from J-prep: ossanおっさん = rude term for a middle-aged man)
F: My idea of an ossan is someone who will always view new things within the context of their past experiences. Say when they see AKB48, they will think: “Oh that! It’s just the same as Onyanko Club!”*3. Their view on things is based on what they already know, I think this is the behaviour of an ossan or an obasan. I am like that in some ways, but I try to avoid it as much as possible.
■ Q13: What should people live for?
F: People…..should live for those who gave birth to them. We live for those who had given us life. For our parents, grandparents and everyone before them, that’s basically it. I’ve thought about it a lot, the purpose of people in this world. Ryoma-san had also thought about what things he could do.
But when it comes to “the reason”, then we live for the people who gave us life. See?
F: I’ve received many letters and presents. Thank you very much! As a 41-year old, I wish for a year of enrichment and a joyful year for you all. Thank you, every one.
