(Recap of Episode 35)
(At the Aizu Hantei…..)
Misc: Last night, we have reports of a Satsuma and Chōshū meeting in Satsuma Han elder Komatsu Tatewaki’s home!
MT: What about?
Misc: It seems the two Hans formed an alliance!
(At Komatsu Tatewaki’s house….)
R: Based on this, the Satsuma-Chōshū agreement is hereby concluded. All agree? (The men nod.)
(At the Aizu Hantei…..)
Misc: Our spies have reported the presence of a dappan rōnin from Tosa as well! (Matsudaira recalls Kondō Isami’s words.)
KI: That Sat-Chō middleman is a devious dappan rōnin from Tosa called Sakamoto Ryōma!
MK: Sakamoto Ryōma?
Episode 36: Teradaya sōdō (寺田屋騒動 Raid on the Teradaya)*
(Morning at the Teradaya. Oryō works in the kitchen and looks up curiously to the first floor. Yatarō gobbles down his breakfast, stopping to cry out in pain. Ryōma has returned from the Sat-Chō meeting and has changed into a yukata. He chuckles as he watches Yatarō.)
Y: Ow! Ow!
R: (chuckle) As long as you can eat like that, I’m not worried.
Y: This is a boathouse*, right?
R: Yup. It’s called the Teradaya. I always stay here whenever I come to Kyō.
Y: Not bad. I’ve only had cheap inns and food tasting like dung so far.
R: (chuckles) I see. You came……(he looks at Yatarō) to check out the Satsuma Han, didn’t you?
(Yatarō freezes, taken aback by Ryōma’s perception. Ryōma sits on the window sill, his back against the light. It is almost impossible to see his face, his silhouette looks deep and unfathomable as he watches Yatarō intently.)
R: A job like that is way over your head, Yatarō.
Y: (throws his chopsticks down) What are you on about? I came to the capital for sightseeing. (He turns his back to Ryōma.) Spying on Satsuma? Who did you hear this rubblish from……
R: You blurted it all out in your sleep. (Yatarō turns to Ryōma in horror.)
Y: …..I did?
R: (sits closer to Yatarō) The Tosa Han doesn’t want to be left behind, does it? But then Yatarō, your wandering about like this won’t get you anywhere. You’ll get arrested and go through that torture again. Go back to Tosa now (Ryōma picks up Yatarō’s tray.) Have you finished? I’m bringing it down.
Y: (shouts) But how can I do that!
(Oryō can hear the two men arguing from the kitchen. Yatarō follows Ryōma down the stairs in anger.)
Y: If I go back empty-handed, you know what Goto-sama will do to me!
R: Goto-sama…. Oh, are you still running errands for that man?
Y: Goto-sama is the Chief Inspector of the Han now!
R: (hands the tray to Oryō) Oryō here, thanks.
Y: We’re not dappan like you. The rest of us stuck in Tosa wouldn’t dare disobey that master! What the hell should I do then!
(Otose looks at Yatarō disapprovingly.)
R: Fine then I’ll tell you. Soon this world will be seeing great changes. The Tokugawa Bakufu era is about to end. (Yatarō turns to Ryōma in shock.) The Tosa Han will not need to watch the faces of the Bakufu anymore. Just say that to Goto Shojiro.
Y: (Grabs Ryōma) Oi, wait….
R: What is it, Yatarō!
Y: How would you know something like that? What…..are you really doing in Kyō?
R: For me, all I want is to change Japan into a country where people can live in laughter.
Y: (Holds on) No, no!
R: Ow Ow! Ouch Yatarō! What?
Y: They say a Tosa dappan rōnin is the go-between in Satsuma and Chōshū ’s plan to rebel. Pulling Satsuma and Chōshū together, only you will think of a trick like that! Only a slick people-pleaser like you!
R: Yes, yes, Yatarō.
(Ryōma passively lets Yatarō rant on and Oryō looks at the 2 men with concern. He tries to climb back upstairs but Yatarō keeps holding on, venting his frustration.)
Y: It’s all because of you that I’m having such a hard time! I want the truth!
R: Calm down!
(Something falls out of Ryōma’s kimono.)
Y: (in a panic) Ah! Th-th-that’s a pi-pistol!
R: (Ryōma picks his pistol up.) Oh…. This was given to me by Chōshū’s Takasugi-san. He said it will “protect me when necessary”. (He smiles) For me, Yatarō, I want to create a new structure in our world. If we don’t accomplish that, we won’t be able to protect Japan.
Y: (blinking) A new structure?
R: The Bakufu is now useless without France’s support. When, after destroying Chōshū, ultimate rule returns to the Bakufu again, half the country of Japan will become the property of France then. But… when that happens, the Americans and English won’t allow it. They’ll start to battle it out for a share of Japan themselves. And this country will be torn to pieces, left to the whim of other nations. For the sake of preventing this, I want to change our country’s structure.
(Yatarō shakes his head, overwhelmed by the knowledge.)
Y: You’re crazy….You’re crazy! Satsuma and Chōshū…..How could they ever join together!
(Yatarō turns to Ryōma. His childhood friend just stands quietly, solid as a rock, looking back at him.)
Y: ….they’ve done it.
R: (pause) I just told you. This country will undergo great changes.
Y: (in shock) You orchestrated it……Ryōma!
R: (laughs) Who made it happen, who set it up, that’s not important at all. You just need to relay what I told you to Goto Shojiro when you return to Tosa. However, the Sat-Chō matter I mentioned, must not be leaked out, Yatarō. If you talk…..(He takes his pistol out, cocks the hammer….) Then….. (…..points it at Yatarō and shoots. The gun is not loaded.) Hahahaha! Got you! (Yatarō glares)
You and I are friends, are we not, Yatarō? Hmm? Don’t just…consider the things right before you. It’s fine to want to do business. But then, what’s going to happen to Japan? What is it we ought to do? We have to think of that too. Iwasaki Yatarō should be a man who sticks to his principles, no matter how the world changes.
(Ryōma gives his friend a pat. Yatarō stares at the man before him, shocked at strong he has now become. As Yatarō prepares to return to Tosa, Otose and Oryō see him off.)
OT: Our shop front is closed now. I’m so sorry you have to use the back.
O: Please have a safe trip. (Yatarō walks off without a word. He stops outside and turns to the women.)
Y: Did you know what type of person Ryōma was when you let him stay?
OT: Of course we did.
Y: If you have anything to do with him, you’ll get implicated too.
O: That’s nothing to be afraid of.
Y: (looks at Oryō)….still as popular as ever with women.
O: (eyes wide) Eh?
(Yatarō walks off. As he passes under Ryōma’s window, he stares up with envy. Oryō watches this strange man leave. In his room, Ryōma was lying down for a rest when Miyoshi invites him for a drink.)
R: Hmm? Oh! (They go to Miyoshi’s room.)
MS: Let’s get out of Kyō.
MS: The Shinsengumi are looking for a dappan rōnin from Tosa. It’s Sakamoto-san, there’s no mistake.
R: But then, I’ve made a promise to Kido-san.
(Flashback to the Satsuma Hantei. Kido and Ryōma have a drink after the talk.)
KK: I will write-up the contents of the agreement. Sakamoto-kun, please endorse it at the back.
R: Wait! Please hold on….. Even if I signed on it, it’s not likely to carry any weight.
KK: We made our pact before you. As long as there is Sakamoto Ryōma, neither I nor Saigō-san can deny it. No-one else is able to endorse on our commitment but you. Please Sakamoto-kun! Please!
(At the Teradaya….)
R: Until I endorse on the agreement, I cannot leave Kyō.
MS: When will Kido-sama….?
R: Well, he says it should be done very soon. Please wait a while longer. (Miyoshi gives a cry of frustration.) Worrying isn’t going to help, Miyoshi-san!
MS: My job is to keep Sakamoto-san safe.
R: I know.
MS: You’re Chōshū ’s savior, Sakamoto-san. If anything happens to you, I….I….
R: I know! Look, Miyo…. (Miyoshi seems like he’s hyperventilating.) Hahahahaha!
MY: What’s so funny!
R: No, no, I’m sorry. Miyoshi-san is….. really a good man. I guess Miyoshi-san and I will be friends for life.
MY: Friends for life?
MY: (Tears well up in Miyoshi’s eyes) Sakamoto-san
MY: Even if I have to give up my life, I will protect Sakamoto-san!
R: (taken aback) Thank you!
(Later, Ryōma talks to Otose and Oryō at the back of the inn.)
OT: 2 or 3 days?
R: Yes. I won’t be able to stay here any longer than that. I have caused Otose-san a lot of trouble.
OT: I told you not to be bothered by that. Ryōma-san was able to come back here. We’re very happy for that. Right, Oryō-chan?
(Oryō doesn’t know what to say. She looks away. Ryōma stares for a long time at her, as Otose continues to talk.)
OT: But then, you can’t stay here forever. Where will Ryōma-san go after Kyō?
R: Back to Nagasaki.
R: ….Yes. I can’t come back to Kyō anymore. Because I’m now a wanted fugitive.
O: So… Is this goodbye then?
(Ryōma does not answer Oryō’s question. Otose lowers her head sadly. He changes the subject.)
R: Oh you know, Nagasaki has an amusing toy called the “poppen”*. (He moves to face Oryō.) It’s made of glass and….and shaped like this (he illustrates with his hands) Now when you blow or suck from it, it makes a funny sound like “poppen poppen”. Next time, I’ll get you one. It’s fun….
O: I don’t want that!
(Oryō knows he’s not coming back. Ryōma looks in pain, as she runs out to the back yard. Tears flow down Otose’s face. She understands Ryōma has to let Oryō go for her own good.)
OT: I had….talked to Oryō-chan before. “Ryōma-san is not a man who will stay in one place. Falling in love with a man like that will only bring heartbreak to a woman.” So the child is prepared for that already. She loves Ryōma-san so much she can’t help herself. (Oryō stands in the cold outside, devastated, while Ryōma thinks over Otose’s words quietly.)
(Hitotsubashi Yoshinobu storms along the corridor in fury. Elder Itakura Katsukiyo follows close behind.)
HY: Why hasn’t Satsuma replied! Why?!
IK: Perhaps Satsuma does intend to work with Chōshū ?!
HY: Rubbish! Satsuma could never betray the Bakufu!
Y: (narration) It wasn’t only Yoshinobu who was feeling worried. Kyōto Protector, Matsudaira Katamori was making preparations to arrest Ryōma.
Misc: The Teradaya is at the Hōraibashi (bridge) in Fushimi
MK: How many people are we sending?
Misc: 12 will go to the Teradaya.
MK: Not enough. Send more.
Misc: Who is this man Sakamoto? What has he……..
MT: JUST BRING HIM IN!! (He calms down.) You must arrest him.
Misc: Yes, my Lord!
Y: (narration) The ramifications of a Sat-Chō alliance would be horrendous. So for the Bakufu, it was necessary that Ryōma’s arrest be conducted in secret.
(At the Satsuma Hantei in Kyōto, Komatsu Tatewaki discusses the next step with Saigō Kichinosuke.)
KT: The most important thing now is when and how we tell the world about our alliance with Chōshū .
<Kyō, Satsuma Hantei>
SK: It’s better for the moment not to reveal our intentions.
SK: The rumours are spreading already. The Bakufu’s anxiety will pass down to pro-Bakufu Hans and some of them should start to withdraw from the expedition to Chōshū
Y: (narration) The world was about to be embroiled in a battle to the end. (Kido Kanji finishes his letter to Ryōma, restating the terms of the Sat-Chō agreement.) And the voices of discord inside my heart were starting to grow as well.
(On his way back to Tosa, Yatarō stops in the pouring rain and looks back to Kyōto. He recalls Ryōma’s advice at the Teradaya.)
R: It’s fine to want to do business. But then, what’s going to happen to Japan? What should we ought to do? We have to think of that too.
(Yatarō glares at the sky, with tears in his eyes, then continues on his way.)
(Night-time at the Teradaya. Otose sits alone in her proprietress room, while Ryōma broods upstairs, his thoughts on Oryō.)
O: So… Is this goodbye then?
(Ryōma replays again the images of Oryō from earlier in the day.)
OT: The child is prepared for that already. She loves Ryōma-san so much she can’t help herself.
(Meanwhile, Oryō takes a bath downstairs. Suddenly someone knocks on the front door of the inn.)
Man: Good evening.*
(The knocking continues non-stop. Otose answers it. Upstairs, Ryōma is still lost in his thoughts.)
(Otose opens the door. Armed officers fill up the street in front of the inn.)
OT: What’s going on?
Man: You have a lodger upstairs. Name him.
OT: Oh… Saigō Kojiro-san from Satsuma Han
Man: Do not lie. It is a dappan rōnin from Tosa called Sakamoto Ryōma.
(Otose looks around at the officers surrounding her. Inside the bathroom, Oryō hears people sneaking into the backyard. She peeks through the windows and reads the name printed on their lanterns in horror. She rushes out of the bath immediately. At the front door, the officer pushes Otose back and charges in.)
Man: Move off!
OT: (shouts) Stop it!
(Ryōma breaks out of his reverie.)
OT: Stop it!
(Miyoshi Shinzō rushes into Ryōma’s room. At the same time, Oryō runs upstairs in her yukata.)
O: We’ve been surrounded by constables!
R: How many are there?
O: I saw about 5 or 6 men. (The first group who came in the backyard are moving up the stairs.)
MS: Should be more (looking out the window) The front door has 12 to13.
O: Please run now!
(Ryōma peeks out of his window overlooking the shop front. He can clearly see the words “Fushimi Magistracy” printed on the lanterns below.)
MS: We can’t escape from the windows.
R: ….We have no choice. We’ll just have to fight back.
(Miyoshi nods. Ryōma retrieves his pistol from the drawer and starts preparing for the battle.)
R: Miyoshi-san! Miyoshi-san please remove the sliding doors.
O: Fight back? They have a lot of people!
R: It’s too dangerous for you here. You’ll get hurt. Go downstairs now.
O: No! I want to fight with you!
R: Don’t be stupid.
O: I don’t want to run away by myself!
R: ORYŌ!! (She stops, stunned at the roar. He drapes his coat on her.) If you really want to save us, then run to the Fushimi Satsuma Hantei now and tell Satsuma that we’ve been besieged by constables. I’m counting on you!
O: (looks at Ryōma in the eye) You must not die, Sakamoto-san.
R: (smiles) I know.
O: You must not!
R: I know! I won’t!
O: Whatever happens, you mustn’t die!
R: (Ryōma looks into her eyes with affection and holds her hands.) I promise you, Oryō! Go! Hurry! I’m counting on you! I’m counting on you!
(Otose has been held back outside the inn. The officers have stormed into the ground level and have almost reached the first floor. Oryō walks out calmly and moves down the stairs.)
O: What’s all this commotion?
Man: Is Sakamoto Ryōma upstairs?
O: If you mean that incredibly strong Samurai, then yes. You better not start any fight.
(The officer walks up and grabs Oryō by the arm.)
Man: Take her away! (Oryō slaps him. He seizes her collar as she glares at him.) You! (Realizing that she’s trying to buy time for the men upstairs, he throws her off to his men.) Take her away!
O: (Oryō is being manhandled down the stairs.) Let me go! Stop! Let me go! Stop it! Don’t touch me! (She struggles against the men. The rest of the officers crowd into the inn and Otose is free. Oryō runs to her.) Proprietress! (Otose hugs her, keeping her safe from the men. Oryō whispers in her ear.) Sakamoto-san is planning to fight for it. I must go to the Satsuma Hantei.
(Otose nods and slowly moves to the front door which is now empty. With all attention focused on the first floor, she lets Oryō go quietly and the younger woman races away. Upstairs, Miyoshi and Ryōma crouch in waiting.)
R: This pistol that Takasugi-san gave me, I finally need to use it.
MS: I will hold them back while Sakamoto-san finds a way to escape.
R: I can’t run away by myself.
MS: I said it before! I would willingly give my life to protect Sakamoto-san!
R: I said so too. Miyoshi-san is my friend for life. (As they speak, footsteps can be heard running up the stairs. The first floor is now filled with men.)
Man: You two are acting suspiciously! Come back to the Magistracy with us!
R: From the looks on your faces, you’re not going to give this up.
Man: These are the orders of the Fushimi Magistrate Hiyashi Higonokami-sama. Hand yourselves in!
(Ryōma shoots once at the ceiling. The fight begins. Miyoshi brings a couple of men down while Ryōma grabs an attacker and throws him down the stairs. He points his pistol at the officers.)
R: Stand aside! (To the men at the stairs) Get back down, all of you!
(Suddenly dust bombs are shot at them from below, forcing Ryōma and Miyoshi to retreat back into the room as more men pour up the stairs.)
Misc: Come quick!
R: Things are getting a bit complicated, Miyoshi-san! One more time!
(Ryōma shoots again. The men attack. During the fight, Ryōma captures the lead constable and points the gun to his head.)
R: Losing your life just to arrest me is not worth it!
LC: (to his officers) Idiots! Back off!
R: (going down the stairs with his hostage) Go down! (To the rest of the officers) You want…you want to waste your lives! Back off! (To the lead constable) Go down!
LC: Back off! Back off!
R: Back off!
(Ryōma shoots again. A part of the ceiling falls down as the men scramble out of the way. There is utter chaos as dust fills the inn. Ryōma and Miyoshi reach the ground floor. The 2 fugitives edge towards the door with their hostage. As they reach it, Ryōma throws the lead constable back in. But their escape is cut off by more officers outside who have used pushcarts to try and run them over. They are forced once more to engage in the scuffle inside the inn. Ryōma fights by hand, knocking his opponents out. Swords flash. His left hand is slashed. Blood spurts out immediately. Ryōma presses down on the cut but cannot stop the gushing blood.)
MS: Sakamoto-san! Go please, Sakamoto-san!
R: I can’t leave Miyoshi-san behind!
MS: Go please!
(Knowing he can’t help anymore, Ryōma cries in frustration and breaks through a window.)
Misc: Don’t let him get away! After him!
(Miyoshi pulls the entire ceiling down with his long spear and runs off after Ryōma. They race through the alleys, followed closely by their pursuers who have lost sight of them, thanks to the delay caused by Miyoshi.)
Misc: Don’t let them get away! (Fushimi officers comb through the backlanes.)
(Ryōma is losing too much blood. His legs buckle under him as they escape.)
R: I’m fine! I’m fine…. (Miyoshi pulls him up.)
MS: Sakamoto-san, come on! Come on, Sakamoto-san!
(Ryōma needs to be supported by Miyoshi now, collapsing again. Miyoshi half carries Ryōma along. Meanwhile, Oryō is also racing in the alleys. She slips and falls, again and again, clambers back up and continues without stopping. At the same time, Miyoshi and Ryōma have reached a log house. Ryōma can go no further. He is panting badly.)
R: I can’t ….. can’t stop the bleeding…. (He cries in pain as Miyoshi ties up his hand with a sash.) I’m sorry. I can’t….I can’t run…I can’t run any more…..
MS: They’ll find us here sooner or later. Instead of being killed at the hands of those people, let’s commit harakiri honorably here! (Miyoshi brings his short blade out.) I couldn’t protect Sakamoto-san. I will not go on living by myself!
R: (Ryōma clings on to Miyoshi’s arm.) Cannot! Cannot!
MS: Sakamoto-san is Chōshū ’s savior. You even brought Chōshū and Satsuma together, achieving what no-one else could, an incredible man! To be able to die with Sakamoto-san is my dream!
R: (his voice a bare whisper now) Thank you Miyoshi-san…But then….but….(he picks up Miyoshi’s short blade) Hara…harakiri can be…(and sticks it back into Miyoshi’s sash) done any other time! We cannot give up! We must not give up! (Ryōma tries to climb to the second level to stay out of sight. Miyoshi needs to help him.) Miyoshi-san…. Miyoshi-san…. the Satsuma Hantei…. the Satsuma Hantei…. Go…go please….. (Miyoshi finally pushed Ryōma up. He is too weak from blood loss even to sit now) If…..If….on the way, you get caught on the way, then….. then I’ll be resigned to my fate.
R: Miyoshi-san… go please…to the Satsuma Hantei (Ryōma reaches out feebly for Miyoshi) Go ….go please!
MS: (holds Ryōma’s hand) I will definitely come back for you!
(Miyoshi runs off immediately. Ryōma raises his head to see him off. There is steam coming out from his breath in the winter’s cold. By now, Oryō has reached the Fushimi Satsuma Hantei. She bangs on the door with all her might.)
O: Please open the door!! I beg you!! Please open up!! Please open up!!
<Fushimi, Satsuma Hantei>
O: Please open the door!!
Man: (A man sticks his head out) What is it?!
O: (she’s too breathless to be coherent) Sakamoto-san is… Sakamoto-san is…
Man: What’s with you?
O: I beg you! I beg you! Please save Sakamoto-san! (The man pushes her away, thinking she’s probably crazy.) Sakamoto-san…please save him!
Man: Enough, go away.
O: (falls on her knees) Please, I beg you! Please, I beg you!
(Using his teeth, Ryōma pulls the sash tighter around his wounded hand. He sees a window with a landing where he can better hide from view. Miyoshi runs down the aisle, straight into a group of Fushimi constables. He picks up a piece of bamboo and prepares to fight. Within a few strokes, he brings the entire group down. Ryōma has crawled painfully onto the landing. He is barefoot and dressed in a thin yukata as he had given his coat to Oryō. He groans as he pulls himself to a higher point, but he has to stop every few seconds. Finally, he rolls weakly on his back and lies there, panting heavily. He starts talking to himself to stop slipping into unconsciousness…..)
R: Those are…. stars….(he tries in vain to pull himself up) stars… I can see stars…..
(He starts to shiver now from the cold.)
R: Oh…… I can’t see them….anymore…. (his eyes slowly shut) …..Kido-san…. Ki….Kido-san….. Sorry….I’m so sorry….. (he’s shivering badly) I…..can’t….I can’t keep…..keep my promise….(he tries to move, but can’t) I’ll …leave it in your hands (his lips are trembling and his voice shakes) Saigō-san, Kido-san…..sorry….I’m sorry……Oryō…Oryō! Oryō…..
(At the Satsuma Hantei, Oryō sits next to a heater. The Satsuma men are in a frenzy.)
Misc: Haven’t you found him yet?!
(At the Kyōto Satsuma Hantei, Saigō Kichinosuke flings the door open.)
SK: Sakamoto-dono was attacked?!
Man: At the Fushimi Teradaya! Surrounded by Magistracy constables, we heard! There were many officers! But Sakamoto-san only had….1 bodyguard!
SK: Yoshii! Bring soldiers and doctors to Fushimi at once!
EK: Yes, my Lord!
SK: We cannot let Sakamoto-dono die!!
(At Fushimi Satsuma Hantei….)
Misc: What’s happening with Sakamoto-dono?!
OY: He’s not at the Teradaya anymore! (Oryō runs out shocked.) The Fushimi Magistracy people are searching everywhere!
O: Is he still alive?! Sakamoto-san?!
OY: I don’t know! He might have been caught already! (Oryō looks at him in horror.)
Misc: Who’s there! (Miyoshi runs up.)
Misc: Stop him!
MS: I’m Miyoshi Shinzō! (He kneels to the Satsuma men.) Sakamoto Ryōma-dono is at the log house at Horigawa river!
Misc: Good! Let’s go save him!
All: Yes sir! (Oryō makes to follow)
MS: (to Oryō) Sakamoto-san is alive! Please wait for him here! (Miyoshi runs off to lead the Satsuma men.)
(Ryōma is still holding on, but barely. His voice is trembling and he is shivering horribly.)
R: I don’t want this! I don’t want this!
Voice: Look! There’s blood here!
(Ryōma tries to move further away as the officers search the log house.)
Misc: He should be close by. Search!
All: Yes, sir!
R: I’m sorry…. I’m sorry, Brother……..Brothe……I’m sorry…. Father…….Father……Mother……..Mo…the…… (his eyelids flutter and he stops….)
(When Miyoshi and the Satsuma men arrive, the log house is already empty.)
MS: It’s here! Sakamoto-san! (He’s not where Miyoshi left him.)….Sakamoto-san!!
(Ryōma is being brought back to the Satsuma Hantei on a cart. Oryō runs over.)
Misc: Give way! Give way! Let us through! Let us through! Give way!
(He lies motionless, his eyes are closed and he shows no response.)
MS: Sakamoto-san, hold on!
O: Open your eyes! Open your eyes! Sakamoto-san! Open your eyes!!
O: Sakamoto-san!! SAKAMOTO-SAN!!
Raid on the Teradaya
*1. There are 2 well-known incidents at the Teradaya in Bakumatsu history. Samurai wiki gives a brief description of both - here
1862 - Joi rōnin, mostly from Satsuma, met at the Teradaya to plan a revolt in Kyōto. They were quashed in a bloody raid by Satsuma samurai. This incident was commonly referred to as the Teradaya Sōdō (寺田屋騒動) which means the Teradaya Riot or Revolt. (This is also different from the Ikedaya Incident which was ended by the Shinsengumi in 1864, and where Ryōma’s friend Mochizuki Kameyata died.)
1866 - The attack on Sakamoto Ryōma, as recounted in this episode. Japanese wiki differentiates this incident from the above with the name the Teradaya Sōnan (寺田屋遭難), meaning (Ryōma’s) Teradaya crisis or peril.
Although “Teradaya Sōdō” (寺田屋騒動) is used as the title for this episode, it commonly refers to a different incident. In coming up with an English equivalent to this title, Luna and I deliberated for a long time on the appropriateness of the term 騒動 (sōdō) in English. A literal translation would be Riot, Ruckus or Revolt. None of these describe what actually happened with Ryōma here. I have therefore decided to use “Raid” instead, which although not a direct translation, is perhaps a better reflection of the contents of this episode.
*2. Funayado or boat house is an inn for boatmen, shipping workers and sailors.
*3. Poppen (Bidoro) - Adapted from the Portuguese word for apparatus, these colorful, yet delicate glass objects were first introduced to the Nagasaki area by the Dutch. When air is blown into them a “poppen” sound can be heard. Primarily a toy, many believe that blowing into one at New Year’s helps to ward off bad luck. (i) more info here) (ii) pictures
*4. Good evening - “Oban desu” is Tohoku dialect meaning literally “it is evening”. Tohoku-ben is spoken in the 6 prefectures of Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Miyagi, Yamagata and Fukushima in Japan’s Tohoku (Northeast) Region - more info here
Timeline for this Episode:
- To be updated
This is where Ryōma was attacked – Fushimi. A bustling hub for water transport, the river banks were filled with boathouses built for the many travelers
And one of them was the Teradaya.
Ryōma had described the Teradaya Proprietress Otose as “learned and benevolent”.
In Keiō Year 2 (1866), Ryōma was attacked by Fushimi Magistracy officers at 3am in the middle of the night.
Upon escape from the Teradaya, Ryōma hid in a log house nearby. On receiving Oryō’s desperate alert,
the Satsuma Han raced over to rescue him.
Having escaped from the peril of the Bakufu’s attack, Ryoma stayed hidden with Oryo inside the Satsuma Hantei.
